Auto Disposable (AD) Syringes are designed as a single use syringe. An internal mechanism cracks the syringe when the plunger is fully depressed to prevent further use. These syringes are only effectively disabled with a full depression of the plunger; users can avoid activating the re-use prevention feature and re-use the syringe.

An Intravenous (IV) Cannula is inserted into a vein, primarily for the administration of intravenous fluids, for obtaining blood samples and for administering medicines and is used in conjunction with Infusion Sets to form a Peripheral IV Line.

A peripheral IV line (PVC or PIV) consists of a short catheter (a few centimeters long) inserted through the skin into a peripheral vein (any vein not inside the chest or abdomen). This is usually in the form of a cannula-over-needle device, in which a flexible plastic cannula comes mounted on a metal trocar. Once the tip of the needle and cannula are located in the vein the trocar is withdrawn and discarded and the cannula advanced inside the vein to the appropriate position and secured. Any accessible vein can be used although arm and hand veins are used most commonly, with leg and foot veins used to a much lesser extent. In infants the scalp veins are sometimes used.

The caliber of cannula is indicated in gauge, with 14 being a very large cannula (used in resuscitation settings) and 24-26 the smallest. The sizes stocked at NMS are:●16-gauge (mid-size line used for blood donation and transfusion), ●18-gauge & 20-gauge (all-purpose line for infusions and blood draws), ●22-gauge (all-purpose paediatric line) and●24-gauge (neonatal line)

14-gauge peripheral lines are capable of delivering large volumes of fluid extremely fast accounting for their popularity in emergency medicine. These lines are frequently called "large bores" or "trauma lines".

Complications may arise in the vein as a result of the cannulation procedure, the four main groups of complication are:●Haematoma: a collection of blood, which can result from failure to puncture the vein when the cannula is inserted or when the cannula is removed. Selection of an appropriate vein and gently applying pressure slightly above the insertion point on removal of the cannula may prevent this.●Infiltration: when infusate enters the subcutaneous tissue instead of the vein. To prevent this, a cannula with accurate trim distances may be used. It is essential to fix the cannula in place firmly.●Embolism: this can be caused by air, a thrombus, or fragment of a catheter breaking off and entering the venous system. Such things can go on to lodge in an artery, blocking circulation to the corresponding area. Air emboli can be avoided by making sure that there is no air in the system. A thromboembolism can be avoided by using a smaller cannula.●Phlebitis: an inflammation of the vein resulting from mechanical or chemical irritation or from an infection. Phlebitis can be avoided by carefully choosing the site for cannulation and by checking the type of infusate used.

A Nasal Cannula is a device used to deliver supplemental oxygen or airflow to a patient or person in need of respiratory help. This device consists of a plastic tube which fits behind the ears, and a set of two prongs which are placed in the nostrils. Oxygen flows from these prongs. The nasal cannula is connected to an oxygen tank, a portable oxygen generator, or a wall connection in a hospital via a flowmeter. The nasal cannula carries 1–5 litres of oxygen per minute. The paediatric or neonatal nasal cannulas carry less than one litre per minute; these also have smaller prongs.

Lumbar Punctures are most commonly performed for the purpose of collecting cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in a case of suspected meningitis, since there is no other reliable tool with which meningitis can be excluded.

Lumbar punctures may also be done to inject medications into the cerebrospinal fluid ("intrathecally"), particularly for spinal anesthesia or chemotherapy. It may also be used to detect the presence of malignant cells in the CSF, as in carcinomatous meningitis or medulloblastoma.

Lumbar Punctures should not be performed in the following conditions:●Idiopathic (unidentified cause) increased intracranial pressure (ICP)●Bleeding diathesis due to coagulopathy or a decreased platelet count●Infections - Skin infection at puncture site and Sepsis●Abnormal respiratory pattern●Hypertension with bradycardia and deteriorating consciousness

Bandages & DressingsA bandage is a piece of material used either to support a medical device such as a dressing or splint, or on its own to provide support to the body; they can also be used to restrict a part of the body during heavy bleeding or following a poisonous bite for example.

Adhesive Bandages adhere to the skin or medical devise.

Crepe Bandages are stretchable bandages used to create localized pressure. They are commonly used to treat muscle sprains and strains by reducing the flow of blood to a particular area by the application of even stable pressure which can restrict swelling at the place of injury. They are also used to treat bone fractures. Plaster of Paris (POP) is used to support broken bones.

Foley CathetersThis is a flexible tube that is often passed through the urethra and into the bladder. The tube has two separated channels, or lumens, running down its length. One lumen is open at both ends, and allows urine to drain out into a collection bag. The other lumen has a valve on the outside end and connects to a balloon at the tip; the balloon is inflated with sterile water when it lies inside the bladder, in order to stop it from slipping out.A major problem with Foley catheters is that they have a tendency to contribute to urinary tract infections (UTI). This occurs because bacteria can travel up the catheters to the bladder where the urine can become infected. The risk of infection can be reduced in the following ways:●Cleansing the urethral area (area where catheter exits body) and the catheter itself.●Disconnecting drainage bag from catheter only with clean hands●Disconnecting drainage bag as seldom as possible●Keeping drainage bag connector as clean as possible and cleansing the drainage bag periodically●Use of a thin catheter where possible to reduce risk of harming the urethra during insertion●Drinking sufficient liquid to produce at least two litres of urine daily

Endotracheal tubes may also be used as a route for administration of certain medications such as salbutamol, atropine, epinephrine, ipratropium, and lignocaine. Endotracheal tubes are commonly used for airway management in the settings of general anesthesia, critical care, mechanical ventilation, and emergency medicine.

An Endotracheal Catheter is a catheter that is inserted into the trachea in order for the primary purpose of establishing and maintaining a patent airway and to ensure the adequate exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Endotracheal tubes can also be used to deliver oxygen in higher concentrations than found in air, or to administer other gases such as helium, nitric oxide, nitrous oxide, or certain volatile anaesthetic agents such as halothane, isoflurane, or sevoflurane.

Picture of a tracheostomy tube

A Tracheostomy tube allows a person to breathe without the use of his or her nose or mouth after tracheostomy procedures which consist of making an incision on the anterior aspect of the neck and opening a direct airway through an incision in the trachea.

A Suction Catheter is a rigid hollow tube made of disposable plastic with a curve at the distal end to facilitate the removal of thick pharyngeal secretions during oral pharyngeal suctioning.

A Chest Tube or Thoracic Drainage Catheter is a flexible plastic tube that is inserted through the side of the chest into the pleural space. It is used to remove air (pneumothorax) or fluid (pleural effusion, blood), or pus (empyema) from the intrathoracic space. Nasogastric TubesA nasogastric tube is a narrow bore tube passed into the stomach via the nose. It is used for short- or medium-term nutritional support, and also for aspiration of stomach contents, e.g., for decompression of intestinal obstruction.A wide bore tube is used if drainage is needed; otherwise, a finer bore tube is used. Fine bore feeding tubes (gauge less than 9) cause less discomfort and less risk of rhinitis, pharyngitis or oesophageal erosion.

Nasogastric tubes are contraindicated in patients with:● High risk of aspiration● Gastric stasis● Gastro-oesophageal reflux● Upper gastrointestinal stricture● Nasal injuries● Base of skull fractures

DisinfectantsChlorhexidine gluconate is used as a topical antiseptic skin scrub for general skin cleansing, as a surgical scrub, and as a pre-operative skin preparation. It is often used as a rubbing agent prior to the use of hypodermic or intravenous needles in place of iodine. It is contraindicated for use near the meninges, in body cavities, and near the eyes and ears.

Sodium hypochlorite and Sodium dichloroisocyanurate are chlorine-releasing agents used for disinfection when used in appropriate dilutions. Chlorine-releasing agents are chemicals disinfectants which are effective against blood-borne viruses and are rapid in action. They are considered the disinfectant of choice in the event of a spillage of blood or body fluid. Chlorine-releasing agents must never be mixed with acids or used on spills of urine as chlorine gas will be released. They should not be mixed with any other cleaning agent or with hot water, but must only be made up with cold or tepid water.

Glutaraldehyde 2%, Ortho-phthalaldehyde 0.55% & Enzymatic detergent are mostly used to achieve high level disinfection. They are routinely used for disinfecting endoscopes at room temperature.

SuturesA surgical suture is a medical device used to hold body tissues together after an injury or surgery. Application involves of using a needle with an attached length of thread. Sutures come in very specific sizes and may be either absorbable (naturally biodegradable in the body) or non-absorbable. Sutures must be strong enough to hold tissue securely but flexible enough to be knotted. They must be hypo-allergenic and avoid the "wick effect" that would allow fluids and thus infection to penetrate the body along the suture tract.Absorbable suture materials include the original catgut (currently discontinued) as well as the newer synthetics polyglycolic acid, polylactic acid, polydioxanone, and caprolactone. Depending on the material, the absorbable process can be from ten days to eight weeks. They are used in patients who cannot return for suture removal, or in internal body tissues. In both cases, they will hold the body tissues together long enough to allow healing, but will disintegrate so that they do not leave foreign material or require further procedures. Occasionally, absorbable sutures can cause inflammation and be rejected by the body rather than absorbed.Non-absorbable sutures are made of special silk or the synthetics polypropylene, polyester or nylon. Stainless steel wires are commonly used in orthopaedic surgery and for sternal closure in cardiac surgery. These may or may not have coatings to enhance their performance characteristics. They are used either on skin wound closure, where the sutures can be removed after a few weeks, or in stressful internal environments where absorbable sutures will not suffice. Examples include the heart (with its constant pressure and movement) or the bladder (with adverse chemical conditions). Non-absorbable sutures often cause less scarring because they provoke less immune response, and thus are used where cosmetic outcome is important. They must be removed after a certain time, or left permanently.
