Steps involved in producing an attractive sketch (kitchen utensils)
Le Corbusier once said: “I prefer drawing to talking. Drawing is faster, and
leaves less room for lies”. Every great invention starts with sketching. A sketch
captures the essentials of the subject, the overall form and perspective, a sense of
volume, movement and feeling. No matter how smart you are, it’s impossible to go
from a simple idea in your head to immediately building it out without hashing out the
details in between. Sketching out your idea before you build it is necessary for every
designer and architect to do. If you get an amusing or interesting idea, quickly jot in
down in your sketchbook. You never know when you may need it. There are several
steps involved to produce an attractive sketch.
Knife is a cutting tool with a cutting edge or blade. There are many different
types of knives with various functions. Knives can be used as a weapon, kitchen
utensils, sports equipment, tools and as a traditional or religious implement as well.
The most common kitchen knives are chef’s knife, paring, utility and bread knife. In
this case, I’ve chose to sketch a chef’s knife. Chef’s knife is very handy and
convenient. It is about 15 centimeter long. Upon observation, I have learned that
chef’s knife has many different parts. Every part has their own specific functions and
characteristics. A chef’s knife is divided into 2 parts: blade and handle. For the blade,
it has a very sharp point at the end of the knife which is often used in piercing. The
finger guard in the middle of the knife is designed to prevent the cook’s hand from
slipping onto the blade. However, the portion of the metal blade that extends into the
handle named as tang improved the stability of the knife and provides extra weight.
The handle guard of the chef’s knife has a rough surface compared to its blade to
give a better gripping and prevents slipping. The chef’s knife is an all-purpose knife
that is curved to allow the cook to rock the knife on the cutting board for a more
precise cut. It can be used for mincing, slicing meat, chopping vegetables and
disjointing large cuts. Chef’s knife is an essential kitchen utensil for every cooker and
plays an important role in daily food preparation.
The humble pencil is a remarkable drawing tool. It is capable of producing an
amazing range of marks, from translucent wisps of shading to the heaviest of dark
strokes. With its many gradations of gray, the pencil can depict the subtlest interplay
between light and shadow, form and void. The gradation of the shading is depended
on the strength when grapping the pencil. I understand that many other tools can be
used to produce a more complex sketch however I have only use a 2B tri-grip Faber
Castell pencil for my sketch. Before sketching, I cleared my workspace to begin my
sketch. It allows me to have a more peaceful mind and better focus on the object.
There are a range of techniques for shading effects using a pencil. For instance,
side strokes with a graphite stick for filling in, cross-hatching, a standard grip for tight
control, and a higher hold for a looser feel. For my sketch, I shade the outline of the
knife. Shading makes the object look realistic and solid. I used cross-hatching
technique on the handle part of the knife in the sketch. I did not erase the “incorrect”
lines but left them instead. By doing this, it lets my drawing breathe and helps me to
learn by my mistakes. I realise that it is more important to think about the volumes I
am drawing than their edges concerning with the line quality.
It takes three hours for me to complete my sketch on the Chef’s knife. During
this period, I set challenges for myself in my drawing. Carefully study and observe
the knife thoroughly and then try to draw it from memory. I feel that I’ve completed an
important task. In addition, it boosts up my confidence in drawing as my drawing skill
is considered below average. Despite from that, I would like to sketch other objects
such as buildings, human anatomy, cartoons and animals in future. The best way to
engage my imagination or to find an idea is start drawing. The art of drawing is the
art of seeing as the saying goes “Observe everything. Communicate well.
Draw, draw, draw” by Frank Thomas,Disney animator. I will now get into the habit of
taking my sketchbook with me whenever I go and start to draw every day.
