Problems addressed by the Project

Fish production of Philippines was growing from 0.4 million tons/year in 1970’s to more than 2 million tons/year in 2010 with drastic increase of commercial fishery production. Including aqua-culture, the Philippines ranked 5th among the top fish producing countries in the world.

The Government of the Philippines has continuously sought improvement of fishery industries: in 1970’s when the fish port facilities were absolutely lacking, in 1980’s when promoting export of high value frozen prawn and big size fresh tuna, in 1990’s when targeting reduction of spoilage, preservation of freshness, improvement of hygienic fish handling, and in 2000’s fishery resource management and development of new fish grounds.
