PRISM CHALLENGEA TBD FEST 2014 PROJECT

FOLSOM MAKERS DEMO NIGHTNOVEMBER 18, 2014

EMMA FLETCHER

WELCOME TO PRISM. THE ROCKET DEPARTMENT LASER AREA.

GOAL

• Create a game for TBD Fest (Music Festival in West Sacramento) October 2014

• 40 ft Shipping Container Provided

• Game: Players navigate through a laser field to the end where they collect a glowing orb. They must bring the orb back to the start. They are timed, a 30 second penalty is added each time they break laser

BUILD SITE (WEST SACRAMENTO, BRIDGE DISTRICT)

SUPPLIES• 10 laser pointers

• 10 photocell (light sensor)

• 10 small mirrors

• 1 Raspberry Pi

• 1 Arduino Mega

• Lots of cat 5 cable

• 1 big button

• 1 tablet (w/ camera)

• PVC Pipe ends (or cardboard toilet paper rolls)

• Velum paper

• Fog machines (optional)

• 1 shipping container (optional)

GIMBALS

• Laser cut wood with plastic support, holding small wooden balls that can rotate. Zipties!

• Originally had super strong magnets attached with hot glue. The heat of the shipping container melted the glue. Solution screw into 2 x 4s propped inside shipping container.

RASPBERRY PI + ARDUINO MEGA

• To support 10 light sensors we needed 10 Analog ports, Pi has one fake analog port, Arduino Uno has 6, Mega has 12. Not the most elegant solution but good enough for a 1 week build.

• Raspberry Pi handled all the game mechanics, playing start audio, timing players, adding penalty values, writing scores to database

• Arduino tracked light sensors and reported back if a laser was tripped. An LED display on the control board showed the laser status

BUILDING!• Got to see site on Sunday Sept 28th

• Started building on-site Oct 2nd

• Festival opened Friday Oct 3rd, 3pm

• Tear down ‘Monday’ Oct 6th 12:30am

LASERS!

PRISM WEB APP

• Run on a local network off the Raspberry Pi (spotty internet connection)

• Players could enter their name and take a picture to be on our leaderboard

• High score of 3s (ParkourChamp)
