Mada je dužnost selektora time teža.
(Šifra „Lazar i Duja“) Prva nagrada

A o nji-hovoj vrijednosnoj skali neka opet razmišljaju čitaoci.
Šifre glase ovako: Lena; Cisko Kid; Mugoša na mjesecu;Zrno; metarmorfoza; OLER; Bogojavljenje; Lotos; Bonacamora; Miris sijena; Letnji bioskop; Ken Louch; Proljeće;Silver Surfer; San trešnje; Brdar 70; Korina; Akil; Lada.

ZBORNIK HAIKU POEZIJE / HAIKU COLLECTION
Među pet korektno napisanih haikua, imaju dva, a moždai tri, izuzetna. Zbog toga se ovom autoru dodijeljuje PRVANAGRADA.
7
PRIRODA U OKU / NATURE IN THE EYE

ZBORNIK HAIKU POEZIJE / HAIKU COLLECTION
Jako veliki broj odličnih, vrlo dobrih i dobrih haikua seslio ovdje, u ovo podneblje, u budući zbornik, festival, biblio-teke, i javne i lične, i ubuduće će činiti dio ukupne kulturnebaštine Crne Gore.

PRIRODA U OKU / NATURE IN THE EYE
Golubovci, Montenegro 2017.The Selector’s decision:
THE FLOCKS FROM THE EAST
TThe Eastern flocks paused in Montenegro. These flocksstayed the night with us. They stopped and landed fin-ding an overnight rest and it appears they decided to
spend the Summer with us and then the winter as well, readyto stay with us. It must be they had found a favourable area. And where if not here in this fruitful Zeta County, by the riverMorača, close by the Skadar Lake, with the sea nearby. No, Ihave not wandered off from the theme, the competition forhaiku coordinated and founded by the tireless Slavka Kli-kovac and her „Vizija” (Vision). Following the decades of theincrease of haiku in this mostly epic country, we have now acontest for haiku poetry with a response of the poets from theregion and even farther, much farther away. It must be thatMontenegro has been recognized out by the poets as a smalland exotic land so the haijins sent their submissions thinkingthey would be highly visible and recognized. So the poetry haspoured in. I’m joking of course, for I’m pleased to have thehonour to judge such an impressive number of quality haiku, even though it is difficult for me. But I don’t complain, ofcourse although it took much more time and thought, for itwas not easy to make the correct decisions. And they are asfollows:
(“Lazar i Duja”) First prize
Wind in the treetopWill the last leaf fall downDuring tonight?

(„Akademik“) Third prize
Above an abysssoars my chilled voice.Without an echo!
(„Sončanica“) Third prize

Faced with an impressive number of good haiku, besidethe first prize the selector decided to grant two second andthree third prizes. Or in other words, have the second prizeshared by two and the third prize shared by three haijins, wha-

tever suits the best however, in essence both meaning thesame. Having a too small number of the prizes available, allthose haiku which were seriously considered for an award, thejudge awarded with an Honourable Mention, or a Commen-dation, depending on how it is preferred to be told or written. There is a number of them and I certainly hope it is not theresult of the judge’s weakness but the competitive quality ofthe works which arrived for the contest which is praise and nota drawback of the contest itself.
Having in mind that these poems will be published in thepost-contest anthology with the rest of the work of these andother authors (the awarded as well), we will not mention themhere, but only line the codes under which they arrived for thecontest. Their position in the collection is coincidental thusgiving the reader an opportunity to evaluate them himself/her-self. These are respective codes: Lena; Cisko Kid; Mugoša namjesecu; Zrno; metarmorfoza; OLER; Bogojavljenje; Lotos;Bonaca mora; Miris sijena; Letnji bioskop; Ken Louch;Proljeće; Silver Surfer; San trešnje; Brdar 70; Korina; Akil;Lada.
Considering the competition rules did not separate thecontest for a single haiku and a haiku sequence, which is oneamong the possible accesses or paths towards the same goal, the selector took into consideration every entry with five haikuand tried to discover the very special thread among themwhich bands them together into a set of poems, which can benamed a haiku sequence, a haiku set or a cycle of haiku, withfull rights. Determined to do so he singled out fifteen sets offine haiku which met his requirement of quality work both assingle poems and which together build a special, thematicallymeaningful whole. The entry under the code „Đul” obtrudeditself as better and more integral than the rest of them:

Blossoming plum tree.An old woman pinching franticly A large bouquet.
These violetsLet them grow jauntily–There’s no one to pick them for.
Pass by if you can.A flowering rose on the tomb– remonstrates me.
No touching a spiderFor somebody is still aliveIn this home.
Among the five correctly written haiku there are two, even perhaps three of them which are of exceptional value. That is the reason for giving the first prize to this author.
Under the code „Mjesečeva staza” among the five haikuthe judge discovered two of exceptional value, so this authorreceives the second prize.
The code „Odsjaji sunca” in my opinion beside a good setas a whole carries one very special haiku so this author recei-ves the third prize.
13
PRIRODA U OKU / NATURE IN THE EYE
I’m certain there are three more authors deserving somekind of an award and they received the Honourable Mentions, their codes are as follows: 0113756181; Maslina; Lijepa Istra;Tyffransky. After this announcement I wish to say somethingmore, yet not as a justification for any eventual selection erroror mischief, the selector all the time kept in mind that eachamong the readers of his decisions would think or say he/shewould have made entirely different choices.
It may appear to the reader that some among the awardedhaiku had the selector’s attention undeservedly and somementioned work or even not selected in any way appears to bebetter. The selector accepts the fact that this is mostly so. I hadmany dilemmas on a number of occasions while reading theentire body of the work, then while making a wider and laternarrow choice of the best haiku. Some dilemmas appearedduring a single day or a single hour but the narrowest choicecircled within the same poems – and those are the ones I havechosen to be awarded and commended. They are within therange of my cognitive and reading experience and well mea-ning altogether. How objective and valid they are indeed youwill evaluate yourself, if a kind of objectivity is possible, forwe know why this dilemma exists but it becomes easier toavoid it remembering those well known verses: „Oh, no oneknows anything – knowledge is fragile.”*
In the hope I have not harmed anyone I keep to myself, perhaps even as a consolation, and you, the users of this infor-mation will make your own evaluations. I owe to you some of

my short observations with regards to and about this contest, giving them even as a recommendation for your future works, haiku writing and entering the competitions. This contest notonly justified all expectations but I experienced it as somet-hing enriching the Montenegrin not small haiku milieu wherethis genre is accepted as an equal to other poetical genres. Thisis the first haiku contest in this old country and will draw con-siderable and wide attention to it. A large number of excellent, very good and good haiku arrived here to this part of the worldto be published in the post-contest anthology, recited at thefestival, libraries both personal and public and in the future itwill be a part of the Montenegrin cultural heritage as a whole. At this moment it appears not important from which milieuand which country the authors are from of these small pearls.Perhaps the haiku itself should be read without the author’sname thus a poem not hiding behind the author, without theauthor’s ego even by the meaning of his/her name as it wasdone by this selector who had access to the codes only andwhich were his helpful walking stick to move around moreeasily discovering the jewels which gladdened him in the wayonly a haiku experience can. So, it is my proposal, to organi-ze a single contest for haiku by anonymous authors, in thefuture – or until the post-contest anthology is printed, untilsome time has passed by or at least the time needed for the for-gettable poems to be affirmed.
At this contest, a haiku experience as I said, thinking ofthat real, true, sincere experience written down less or moresuccessfully in most cases is built into true haiku. Otherpoems I avoided dexterously believing our encounter wasaccidental. I was sad only in those cases when I realized theauthor had everything there but the skill of realization of thehaiku itself. Especially when haijin would pack his/her haiku

The results of the 1st Montenegrin Haiku Contest in English, 2017.Adjudicator’s Report (by David Cobb)
IIwas chosen for the honour of adjudicating this contestbecause the organisers thought I would be best able tomonitor the English. I found myself looking at about 235
haiku by almost 50 writers, about whom, because of the rulesof the contest, I was in the dark. I had no idea about the parti-cipants’ names, where they were living, or what language theynormally spoke. For want of such detailit was reasonable tosuppose they were all, or most of them, Montenegrins. I sup-posed there were no entrants from countries where English isspoken as the first language, so I would be making my judge-ments on a level playing field. I prepared to look kindly onsmall ‘mistakes’ in the English, so long as these didn’t makethe sense of the haiku unclear.
As a matter of fact, there were about a dozen entries thatdidn’t match up to lucid English and/or were not true to haikuform, so these I had no choice but to rule out of contention. Asfor the remainder, mostly their meanings came across to me ina correct and lucid way. What in fact influenced my choiceswas the writers’ ability to record a graphic message aboutsome happening or observation, something noteworthy intheir own lives.
When I had finished making my decisions it was somet-hing of a shock to be informed that the entrants were actuallyliving in no fewer than 19 countries, and not one of them wasa Montenegrin! There were half a dozen living in countrieswhere English is a/the national language. But this informationdid not seem to invalidate the awards I made. Let us turn to thehaiku themselves now.
17
PRIRODA U OKU / NATURE IN THE EYE
A majority of them use a ‘formula’ in which a traditional‘season word’ from nature is juxtaposed with another less con-ventional image from modern life. On the one hand we have lotsof cherry blossom, rain, frost and snow, butterflies and larks, clouds and wind. On the other hand we have traffic and wastebins, stressful moments and crushed egg shells, drought andflood, beggars and refugees, psyche and writer’s block. Thisseems to be a world where people are struggling to find peaceand security when these are under threat or have been lost.
As I read through the haiku, which I had to do many timesin the process of winnowing out strong contenders for themain awards, several criteria began to establish themselves. One was, of course, skill in using the haiku form (or rather, thenow established form of ‘Western free style’ haiku.) But tradi-tion should be in balance with originality. Another criterionmight be ability to link a flash of observation in the present tothe continuity of human experience over time (what some call‘the vertical axis’.) The mood sustained by a haiku was impor-tant too, and haiku might capture something of the philosophyof people living in our times. The words ‘division’ and ‘divi-siveness’ kept on entering my head. Perhaps they are an essen-tial part of our Zeitgeist? Of course, haiku does not use wordslike ‘division’ or ‘security’. But it may imply one or both in aphrase such as ‘split rail fence’.
Well, then. In First Place I have put a haiku sent in by penname, Bonsai. Its context is homely but not over-familiar. It isopen-ended; the reader may decide whether this is a quiet orunquiet scene. It has a vertical axis for, amazingly enough, itbrings to mind the thought that humans and animals havegazed at each other over fences since prehistoric times whenhumans gave up hunting and became animal keepers. Finally,it is well formed and easy on the ear. So, congratulations to theauthor for producing this excellent haiku!

The Second Prize goes to pen name Whiskey for this haiku:a swirl of bluethe kingfisherdisturbs my reflection
Tracy Davidson, Armscote, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, Great Britain
The choice of ‘swirl’ is excellent here, and the ambiguityof ‘reflection’ is acceptably clever. We appreciate both thepoet’s facial image floating in the water and what is going onin the head. A ‘barrier’ of consciousness is disrupted? It is forthe reader to decide how welcome this ‘disturbance’ is.
I’d like to share Third Place between two entries, Nexusand Shakuhachi. Nexus gives us:
noonday heata butterfly seeks restin my shadow
Celestine Nudanu, Ghana
This is neatly structured and on another day might wellhave been a first choice. But I had the feeling we would havemet quite a few haiku with a rather similar happening to rela-te. Nevertheless it did create mixed feelings of ease and dis-comfort, and of empathy between human and insect.

Shakuhachi offers us:
my ex remarriesa snake gourd unfurlsits flowers of lace
Judit Katalin Hollós, Budapest, Hungary
This is obviously a poem about ‘division’, personal, butwithin the range of many readers. The emotion is, in besthaiku style, not directed by adjectives, but by juxtaposing ima-ges from nature. I don’t actually know what a snake gourd islike, but I get the writer’s mood all the same.
My final award is for the best set of 5 haiku all by the samepoet: / Posljednju nagradu dodjeljujem za najbolji set haikua:

S jedne strane imamo mnogo trešnjica u cvatu, kišu,šumu i snijeg, leptir i ševe, oblake i vjetar. S druge strane ima-mo promet, kante za smeće, stresne trenutke i zdrobljene lju-ske jajeta, sušu i poplavu, prosjake i migrante, dušu i književ-ničku krizu.

DRUGA NAGRADA

Tracy Davidson, Armscote, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, Great Britain

Ovo je očito pjesma o „podjeli“, osobnoj, no u ometu ve-ćine čitatelja. U stvari i neznam kako izgleda zmijolika tikva, no doživio sam autoričinoraspoloženje.

IIbelieve the organisers of the contest are planning a morerepresentative publication, which would include furtherhaiku under a heading such as Merit Awards. I have cho-
sen one or sometimes two from nearly all the entrants. Lastbut not least, a big thank you to the organisers and those takingpart in the contest for the pleasure they have given me.
