The Priory of Sion (French: Sion) is the name given to a fraternal organization founded by Pierre

Plantard the July 20, 1956, as recorded in the Official Journal of the French Republic number 167,page 6731, characterized by their Rosicrucians modern dyes. In the sixties Plantard told a historical

background for this organization, which he described as a secret society founded by Godfrey of

Bouillon on Mount Zion in the Kingdom of Jerusalem in 1099, and has for its purpose the

establishment of a secret lineage Merovingian dynasty on the thrones of France and the rest of

Europe. Subsequently the myth would be expanded and popularized by the pseudo-historical book

The Holy Grail in 1982, and later was described as a fact in the preface to the novel The Da Vinci

Code in 2003.

Historically, there was something like the so-called “Priory of Sion”, in 1099, the Crusaders of

Western Europe, after conquering Jerusalem from Muslim rule, they built a new church on the

ruins of an ancient Byzantine church called Hagia Sion. The new church was called St. Mary, and

the group of priests who attended were known as The Priory of Our Lady of Sion, a title that

combined the names of both churches. They remained there until 1217, when Muslims destroyed

Santa Maria after reconquer Jerusalem. At that time, they retired to Sicily, where they continuedto exercise their ministry. The Priory survived for four centuries until, in 1617, his last members

joined the Jesuits. In summary, the Priory of Sion was one of many orders and societies that have

come and gone over the history of the Catholic Church. Yes, there was a real Priory of Sion

founded in 1099, but it has nothing to do with the current Priory of Sion, which is merely a

fictitious product, as the character of Plantard, who appears in several works, between the errata

of the works, we can find some false images as the idea of “great masters” that could not exist in

the original Priory, as shown us in many books and articles on this subject, for the simple reason

that the head of a priory is a prior and not a grand master.

The Priory of Sion, as is known mainly thanks to the novel by Dan Brown and others style Lynn

Picknett, Clive Prince and some others who have written about topics like this, has been describedas one of the great historical fiction of the twentieth century. Some skeptics have expressed

concern about the proliferation and popularity of books, websites and films inspired by this

deception that have contributed to the problem of conspiracy theories, false stories and other

increasingly common confusion. Others have expressed concern about the romantic reactionary

ideology promoted by these works.

In 1982 a controversial non-fiction book The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail, is a book by Michael

Baigent, Richard Leigh, and Henry Lincoln. in which the authors presented the following myths as

facts to support their hypotheses

there is a secret society known as the Priory of Sion, which has a long history starting in 1099, and

had illustrious Grand Masters including Leonardo da Vinci and Isaac Newton;

it created the Knights Templar as its military arm and financial branch; and

it is devoted to installing the Merovingian dynasty, that ruled the Franks from 457 to 751, on the

thrones of France and the rest of Europe.

However, the authors re-interpreted the Dossiers Secrets in the light of their own interest in

undermining the Roman Catholic Church’s institutional reading of Judeo -Christian history.

Contrary to Plantard’s initial Franco-Israelist claim that the Merovingians were only descended

from the Tribe of Benjamin, they asserted that:

the Priory of Sion protects Merovingian dynasts because they may be the lineal descendants of thehistorical Jesus and his alleged wife, Mary Magdalene, traced further back to King David;

the legendary Holy Grail is simultaneously the womb of saint Mary Magdalene and the sacred

royal bloodline she gave birth to; and the Church tried to kill off all remnants of this bloodline and

their supposed guardians, the Cathars and the Templars, so popes could hold the episcopal throne

through the apostolic succession of Peter without fear of it ever being usurped by an antipope

from the hereditary succession of Mary Magdalene.



The authors also incorporated the antisemitic and anti-Masonic tract known as The Protocols of

the Elders of Zion into their story, concluding that it was actually based on the master plan of the

Priory of Sion. They presented it as the most persuasive piece of evidence for the existence and

activities of the Priory of Sion by arguing that:

the original text on which the published version of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion was based

had nothing to do with Judaism or an “international Jewish conspiracy”. It issued from a Masonic

body practicing the Scottish Rite which incorporated the word “Zion” in its name;

the original text was not intended to be released publicly, but was a program for gaining control of

Freemasonry as part of a strategy to infiltrate and reorganise church and state according to

esoteric Christian principles;

after a failed attempt to gain influence in the court of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, Sergei Nilus

changed the original text to forge an inflammatory tract in 1903 to discredit the esoteric clique

around Papus by implying they were Judaeo-Masonic conspirators; and

some esoteric Christian elements in the original text were ignored by Nilus and hence remained

unchanged in the antisemitic canard he published.

In reaction to this memetic synthesis of investigative journalism with religious conspiracism, many

secular conspiracy theorists added the Priory of Sion to their list of secret societies collaborating or

competing to manipulate political happenings from behind the scenes in their bid for world

domination. Some occultists speculated that the emergence of the Priory of Sion and Plantard

closely follows The Prophecies by M. Michel Nostradamus (unaware that Plantard was

intentionally trying to fulfill them).Fringe Christian eschatologists countered that it was a

fulfilment of prophecies found in the Book of Revelation and further proof of an anti-Christian

conspiracy of epic proportions.

Those closest to the idea of the actual existence of the Priory supporters are based on thefollowing facts and arguments:

A list of illustrious Grand Masters (The Grand Masters of the Priory of Sion clandestine have been

known traditionally as “Nautonniers” or “Navigators”. The first official Navigator of the Priory of

Sion was Jean de Guisors, who was present at the Tala del Olmo of Guisors and served from 1188

until his death in 1220, under the title of Juan II. The first Navigators of the Priory of Sion seem to

have passed its leadership through a familiar inbred line, but later this position was occupied by

some of the most influential artists, scientists and creative minds in the history of Europe. As

disclosed in the list dated 1956 contained in the Dossiers secrets and copied in its entirety under

the entrance of this book titled Grand Masters of the Priory of Sion. Many distinguished people

occupied this position, including Leonard do da Vinci, Isaac Newton, Victor Hugo and Jean Cocteau,who thinks he served from 1918 to 1963), this would indicate that the Order of Sion would have a

long history that began with the creation Knights Templar and their military and financial fronts.

However, this list is based on an admittedly false document.

It is said that played an important role in promoting the myth of “hidden river of esotericism”, the

Alph, in medieval Europe.



Swears reinstate the Merovingian dynasty which ruled the Frankish kingdom from 447-751 AD, on

the thrones of Europe and Jerusalem, despite not getting even one such accredited dynasty

descended.

The order would protect the royal dynasty because according to the doctrine of the order, the

Merovingian dynasty would be the direct descendants assumptions of Jesus and his alleged wife

Mary Magdalene. However, genetic studies were made in 2006 and in the television show of the

History Channel Digging for the Truth, they made a genetic analysis of Aragunde, one of the first

Merovingian queens, in order to prove or disprove held that the bloodline descended from Jesus

and Mary Magdalene. The result of the analysis concluded that the origin of the lineage of the

Merovingian dynasty was European only and was not genetically related to any of the populations

of the Middle East, ruling it real French legend about the supposed descendants of Jesus and Mary

Magdalene, that were clearly Jewish.

Thus, the existence of the Priory of Sion remains an elusive mystery even today.
