As you read through this annual report, you will become acquainted with the UCP family of organizations. You will be introduced to a few of the extraordinary volunteers, staff and clients, who make up this family. Through their strong partnership, we have created the widest continuum of programs, providing more direct services and support to children and adults and their families with developmental disabilities than any other health charity in Southern California.

During these past two difficult years, when state funding was reduced, contributions were down, and operation losses large,

I would like to thank each and

every member of the Board for

their friendship and continued

support in carrying out the

mission of UCP. Without their

dedication, hard work, and energy,

UCP would not be what it is

today. When called upon to serve, our Board of Directors

do so willingly, with an open heart and checkbook, and for

that, I and the clients of UCP are eternally grateful! As you

know, we continue to face tough economic times ahead,

and their involvement and commitment to UCP has never

been more needed or welcomed. Together, with family

and community support, we give the gift of independence

and ensure a life without limits for all of our clients. Their

service and selflessness never goes unnoticed or unappreciated.

It is a humbling honor and privilege to serve as your chairman.

Sincerely,

Nicholas P. RoxboroughChairman, Board of Directors

all UCP services continued at the highest quality and even expanded. We completed our new affordable apartment complex, Casa de la Amistad, in Glendale, developed an apprenticeship program for disabled adults in Santa Barbara, served 200 children with autism a week through our performing arts program, and custom-fit and delivered 5,000 wheelchairs to poor children and adults in developing countries around the world. We also opened UCP Wheels for Humanity Indonesia, a wheelchair assembly plant in Yogyakarta.

As we developed these new divisions and increased our services, we continued uninterrupted, to serve approximately 1,000 individuals with disabilities every day in over 40 locations which you will see in this report.

What makes this possible is our caring community, our generous, dedicated Board of Directors, professional staff who are at the top of their game, and the families of those we serve.

To all of you who are involved in any way, our heartfelt thanks; you truly make a difference. For those reading about the UCP family of organizations for the first time, I invite you to join us. Together, we will enrich the lives of many.

Sincerely,

Ronald S. Cohen, Ph.D.President and Chief Executive Officer

Who We Are

United Cerebral Palsy of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties (UCP), founded in 1945, has become the largest nonprofit direct care provider

of services in Southern California for persons with cerebral palsy, autism, and other developmental disabilities, serving over 1,000 children and adults daily.

UCP offers over 40 programs and services in four counties, ranging from residential and day programs to advocacy and family support services. These include

adult day activity and learning centers; affordable, accessible apartments, accompanied by supported living counselors; group homes with full activities and

nursing staff; children’s programs; advocacy; and RESPITALITY, giving

parents a much needed break. By adding UCP WORK, Inc. to our

family in 2001, UCP’s services expanded into Santa Barbara County.

Then with the addition of UCP Wheels for Humanity in 2007,

UCP’s impact was elevated to a global level.

Through the generosity of our community supporters, the commitment

of a dedicated staff, and the courage and vision of our Boards of Directors

and Board of Governors, UCP meets the needs of individuals and their

families throughout their lifetime, enabling them to maximize their own

potential and live full and dignified lives. UCP continues to grow and

evolve as an organization, devoted to enabling persons with all

developmental disabilities to live a life without limits. Students of the UCPlay Project follow Program Manager, Olivia Karaolis (bottom left) and Teal Sherer, UCPlay Project Teacher (top left) in a creative arts lesson at Point Dume Marine

Children’s Programs - UCPlay PROJECT

The UCPlay Project, created in October of 2008, gives children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum

Disorders (ASD) and other disabilities a voice through drama, dance and music. We draw on the

creative arts to foster communication, social relatedness and expansion of behavioral interests. Our

learning experiences are designed to develop joint attention. Joint attention makes a significant

contribution in our ability to share objects, feelings and experiences with others. Currently, this

program teaches over 200 students a week ranging from 3 to 15 years of age. The UCPlay Project has

grown significantly from its inception and is being taught in the Los Angeles, Malibu-Santa Monica

and Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School Districts.

Students at Wilton Place Elementary (LAUSD) participate in the Hoola Hoop activity as part of the UCPlay Project curriculum.

UCP is fortunate to have several active parent groups at multiple group home locations. The multi-generational groups are made up of parents and siblings

of our clients who meet on a regular basis to interact with staff and other families. The meetings act as an educational and social forum to help build

continued support of the UCP RESPITALITY Program, it

is a huge gift for our family and we sincerely appreciate

the opportunity to be a part of it.”

- Edward & Susan Inclan

The UCP RESPITALITY Program offers parents of children with special

needs the opportunity to get away for a relaxing weekend. Parents are

given the gift of free weekend accommodations at one of our local partner

hotels, while a qualified UCP Care Provider takes care of the children in

their own home at no cost to the family. A UCP RESPITALITY weekend

gives couples and single parents a chance to get away and have a much

needed break. Since it’s inception in 1989, the program has been

supported by 18-20 hotels in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties each year,

enabling UCP to serve 70 families annually.

Employees

The staff and management team at UCP are the foundation of the organization. As far north as Santa Barbara County and as far south as Orange County,

there are over 650 people on the UCP roster. Many employees have been with the organization for over 30 years and it is this dedication and loyalty that

has helped us become the largest provider of services to the developmentally disabled community in Southern California. Each employee serves an important

role here at UCP and together they help make a difference in the everyday lives of our clients and their family members.

Special Children’s League and Psi Delta Sigma

UCP is the fortunate recipient of the hard work and dedication of two auxiliary groups, the Special Children’s League, Inc. (SCL) and Psi Delta Sigma, Inc.

Special Children’s League was founded in 1946 as a volunteer organization dedicated to furthering the cause of all people with developmental disabilities.

There are three active SCL committees (Foothill, South Bay and Whittier) that raise funds for UCP through special events, silent auctions and other activities. Psi

Delta Sigma was founded in 1921 as a national social group of women with a charitable purpose of supporting United Cerebral Palsy. Today there are

seven chapters exclusively in Southern California. The SCL committees and Psi Delta Sigma chapters together continue to raise thousands of dollars every

year for UCP and continue to foster their goals of helping individuals with developmental disabilities.

Fundraising and Events

Fundraising and events are an important part of UCP’s growth and help build

awareness for our mission. We host a variety of fundraising events

throughout the year. The UCP Golf Classic is in its fourteenth year at the

Wilshire Country Club and the Devon Stern/UCP Golf Tournament is in its

twelfth year at the Camarillo Springs Golf Course. The newest event, which takes

place in the fall, is our Annual Casino Night at the Santa Monica Pier Carousel.

Through the kindness of community supporters and our Board of

Directors and Governors, UCP has been successful in raising money

to support our many programs. UCP has become a leader in Southern

California in providing direct care services for persons with cerebral

palsy, autism and other developmental disabilities, serving over 1,000

children and adults daily.

UCP Wheels for Humanity (UCP WFH), a division of UCP, collects and

refurbishes discarded wheelchairs and delivers them to disadvantaged

children and adults in developing countries. Since 1996, UCP WFH has

helped thousands of children and adults with disabilities across the developing

world gain increased mobility and dignity. UCP WFH is one of the few

organizations of its kind that uses the expertise of volunteer physical therapists,

occupational therapists and certified rehabilitation technology suppliers to

individually fit the wheelchairs to meet the recipients’ needs.

Wheelchairs are strapped to a van where they will make their way to new owners. Many wheelchair recipients are given control over their mobility for the first time in their lives.

Partner Organization

In April of 2009, UCP WFH received a $1.6 million grant from USAID to establish an

assembly facility for wheelchairs, a training program for physical therapists and to develop

an empowerment and advocacy program in Indonesia. The wheelchair assembly operation

is located in Yogyakarta, Indonesia and employs a staff with disabilities to manage and run

the program. The end product is a locally produced pediatric wheelchair, which will be given

away to poor Indonesian children. Locally trained physical therapists will fit and service the

wheelchairs and a new awareness of disability rights by the Indonesian government will result

from this venture. The project is expected to

become a long-term program in Indonesia and

a model for future programs. With their new

found mobility, children will be able to attend

school and become models of empowerment

for future generations of children with disabilities. One of the first recipients of a UCP WFH - Indonesia wheelchair.

UCP WORK, Inc., a division of UCP, offers services to over 400 residents throughout Santa Barbara

and Ventura Counties. Their programs cater to children and adults with developmental disabilities, mental

health conditions, physical limitations and other neurological disabilities. UCP WORK, Inc.’s mission is

to empower and support people with significant disabilities so that they may achieve the highest degree

of independence.

Board Involvement

The members of the UCP Board of Directors and Governors have an earnest desire and genuine willingness to serve and assist us in reaching our objectives.

This talented group of men and women are UCP goodwill ambassadors out in the community. They are advocates who devote their time, vision, money and

guidance in an effort to ensure that children and adults with developmental disabilities have the critical programs and services that they need.

“Serving on the UCP Board has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have had. The bonding and support

among the board, staff and clients is unique in my experience. Over the past several years the leadership of UCP has

continuously reached out finding new ways to support people with disabilities.”
