This is the second is-sue to the greatest thing you’ll read this month. I don’t want to toot my own horn, but Issue one was AWESOME, and I’m so ready for you to read this issue. Now, if I were a mean soul, I would call out the people who didn’t show love, who cussed me out, and who told me it was stu-pid issue, BUT I’m not. I appericiate everyone’s input and I learn from it. I’m not prefect, and neither is PRINT. We’re just tumbleweed blowing in the wind...

In this issue, we put ART as our main fo-cus. Visually, we want you to orgasm and then use that to make your own kind of art. We also have Brehon Wil-liams, who is showing us his line (which was featured at VA Fashion Week), a BAD A (shut your mouth) hair school that is taking VA to NYC, a girl that make cool mother land jew-erly, and we’re showing off the new collection of the Jacksons, the J5 collection. You know, I received a

phone call right after the first issue went live. It was a friend telling me I was about to start a war. Well you know I just like to say: If you can’t beat them, join them

his fashions.

P: How did you get into designing?

B: [Laugh] I don’t know. Before, I want-ed to design roller coasters and then from there I just got into fashion.

P: What made you want to design roller coasters?

B: I don’t know. I’m like a hardcore roller coaster. I don’t know where that came from either. In school, I was more in science and math. That’s all I have, I don’t have any art background.

P: When did you learn how to make clothes?

B: In 12th grade, my studio art teacher ask if I wanted to learn to know how to sew. I use to go to the thrift store, take clothes apart, study them, and out them back together.

P: Did you go to a school for arts?

B: I went to a regular high school. I was in the IB program, it’s the smart program but it’s more about science and math.

P: Do you still want to design roller-coaster now?

B: Yes, I love roller coaster

P: What was the first piece you ever made that you knew ‘this is it’?

B: When I first started, the pieces looked fine, but they [laugh] weren’t wearable, they weren’t made right. They were totally off, and so I think my first collection is really where I started actually making clothes close to the right way. That collection was in Jan/Feburary 2009,

Find Brehon and his fashion on ModelMayhem:

Brehon Williams

P: What did that look like?

B: It was all denim, Blue and black denim, that was the first collection. I featured it in my first show that was in New York, first for everything. I was so scared saying ‘I’M NOT READY’, but then I realized maybe I can do this. They actually looked good, versus now how they were made, but they looked good.

P: What is your favorite material?

B: My asethic is Menswear for woman so I like stiff, sturdy materials because I like to make it soft. With the denim collection, I found a way to make it look feminine when though the material was very stiff, like cardboard. The only time I haven’t use hard fabric is with this collection, it totally different for me.

P: Which gender do you prefer making clothes for?

B: Women, women you can do… it’s funny be-cause now you can do more with woman, but I got my inspiration from the past. Back in histo-ry men overdressed woman. Men can dress back in the day and that’s where I get my inspiration. Back then, I would have rather dressed the men, but now I would do woman.

P: Tell us about your new line? Tell us how you got the concept, the ideas?

B: I wanted something that was different, first of all. I thought of the fabric I wanted and I wanted it to be soft and breathable, so I got an idea of air and sand. The idea of that air moves with sand and also sand and dirt, because sand is lighter and dirt is brown, gritty color. So I tried to keep it me and still a little different.

YO!I love Newport News Libraries. Since I live in Bad News, 757, the only libraries I have been to have been locally, and I must say that they are improv-ing very much every time I go in. More places to sit down and read (that’s a big one), open spaces, better catalog and book ordering systems, wireless, vending machines, magazines, peace of mind, and some of the same faces I’ve seen since I was a little girl. Without these libraries, I probably wouldn’t be at girl I am. Go to any of these great libraries and tell us about your favorite library near you!

Can someone tell me how cool the libary is...

BIFFGraffitti artist and lover, and also Icy Grape’s newest featured artist, sits down and talks to us about his style, his life, and

his love for grafitti art

What’s up with the spray cans?I started writing graffiti, in the early 90s. A lot of my friends were into it as well. We bonded because of graffiti and art. We use to go write on buildings and all that stuff until I got arrested in ‘95. Now I keep all my art work in books for legal reasons. What was the story behind you getting arrested?I was underneath this bridge, me and some other guys, and we were out there painting, and this cop was walking through with some kids, off duty. He walked up on us, in the middle of it, no one ran. He probably would of chased us or gotten shot if we would have ran. We were in a down low spot and it was random that he walked up on us that day. I don’t get up on walls anymore, unfortunately.

What are you doing now with your art?I would love to do some commission pieces and I would love to find some businesses walls that are interested in actually doing some big productions, but as far as the illegal side, I’m not doing that. So tell us about how you got your name?Biff is my real name. It’s Biff Ryan Marshall. My mother wanted to name me Ryan Scott Marshall, my father wanted to name me Biff Jones. What of products you use to draw?Generally marker, sometimes I start with pencil, sometimes with straight marker. I drew characters at Busch Gardens for 12 years. I’ve been doing characters from age 18 until the present. Work-ing there, you draw the final copy first. I draw your face in 3 minutes flat, with a sharpie basically. There were no room for mistakes, in which trained my hand to draw the final copy first. It’s just so easy for you..Most of my artwork takes me 5 minutes or less, almost everything I’ve ever drawn. If it takes me any longer [to draw], than I lose interest. What are your Influences?I definitely get my artistic influences from work-ing with other caricatures artist at Busch Gardens. I always enjoyed drawing and being creative. It’s something I’ve done to get the crazies out of my head. How would you explain your style?Simple. I always had a very simple style. My stuff is very cartoon like and two dimensional, and people seem to like it. It’s about what’s inside me. I tend to see the world as if everything was a cartoon. When I was a little kid people asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, and I always said a cartoon character. Have you ever drawn on things other than pa-per and walls? Tattooing?I have dabbled in the tattoo industry in the last 10 years. 10 years ago I was actually tattooing a little more but now I’m trying to break back into that..

Want mad props in the office this season. Want to bring something good to the of-fice holiday par-ty? Bring Fat Girl Trapped in a Skinny Body’s little piece of heaven - the Gingerbread Cake. JOY TO THE WORLD, cake has come :)

PRINT loves FOOD

Turn for the recipe...

Gingerbread Cake

1 cup all purpose flour1 cup whole wheat flour1 teaspoon baking soda1/2 tsp baking powder1/4 teaspoon salt1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinna-mon1 teaspoon ground ginger1/8 teaspoon ground cloves1/2 cup apple sauce1/2 cup (105 grams) light brown sugar2 large eggsZest of 1 lemon1/2 cup unsulphured molasses1 cup 1% milk (you can use non-fat or whole also) Preheat oven to 350 degrees and place rack in center of oven. Grease your pan of

choice with non stick spray. Note: You have a variety of pan options: 24 Cupcake Pan (bake for only about 20 minutes) - 9 inch loaf pan - 9 inch round cake pan (bake for about 30-35 minutes). Set aside.

In a bowl whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, ground cinna-mon, ginger and cloves. Set aside.

In a separate bowl of your electric mixer, beat the applesauce and sugar. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the lemon zest and molas-ses and beat to combine. Add the dry ingredients and milk, alternately, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Beat just until incorporated.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with an offset spatula. Bake for 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Remove from oven and let cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes before removing cake from pan. Let cool completely and then frost (I just used chocolate frosting from a can for the little cake. Remember, it was 5:15 Saturday morning. Making gingerbread was enough of an accomplishment that early).

People in our world don’t have any

WATER, ya’llIf this problem occured in the United States, we’d be the biggest babies of all. Water is nesscarry for life and with-out it we’d have no food, no animals, no earth, NO US! People around the world are plague with bad drinking water, or no water at all:

1 out of 6 people lack access to safe drinking water, namely 1.1 billion people, and more than 2 out of 6 lack adequate sanitation, namely 2.6 billion people (Esti-mation for 2002, by the WHO/UNICEF JMP, 2004). 3900 children die every day from water borne diseases (WHO 2004).

Think about all the water you waste EVERYDAY, and think about the people who DON’T have water to waste like us. I know your probably going to pass this page and say “Whatever, at least I got water”...Understandable, but when you think about it, if it were you, would you want someone to just pass you by.

When I first walked into Rudy&Kelly Academy, I thought i walked into a differ-ent world. Everything looked so modern and upscale. This must be a high scale hair school/salon...

Ever dreamed of working at a high paced salon and becoming a stylist yourself?Well your in luck because Rudy & Kelly Academy, located in Virginia Beach, is a high profile hair school/salon waiting for you to apply. Before I went to visit the school I didn’t know anything about it, other than knowing a friend who worked there. Walking in really does put you a different world.

They offered classes for all ages and classes dealing in Professional Development all the way to chemistry of the products and hair. This school is so cool they have their own salon built right in that looks like the backstage of a high fashion runway show. I was so impressed by all the students, dressed in black by the way, that I could hardly focus on my tour. These classes are intense, fun, and you won’t leave without being hands on, that’s important for any career.

Starting dates for the 2011 year are: Jan 10, 2011, Mar 1, April 19, June 7, July 26, Sept 13, Nov 1. Each core class is about every 7 weeks. Transferring credits can only be ac-cepted from other Paul Mitchell schools.

So are you interested more about how to apply?

The first step is coming in and filling out an Enrollment Application and you sit down with admissions and they take you around on a tour of the school. Next, you would talk to finianical aid about going to the school since the price to go is around $17 thousand dollars. Don’t get discourage, Rudy&Kelly take care of their students by offering the best hair education possible.

If your into hair, but more into different comestic applications, don’t worry, you will be taking make-up courses right along with your hair courses. Wigs, Nails, and the Study of Skin is right along with the course load.

The state of Virginia requires about 1500 clock hours for Cosmetology, and I couldn’t think of any of school that would give you this and more.

African American? Asian? White? Blue? No worries, Rudy & Kelly specialize in ALL hair types. There is nothing you won’t find at Rudy& Kelly.

Everyone there is serious and very freindly. Your not just a number and talking to the students and teachers I found that a real ed-ucation goes on at Rudy&Kelly. A sense of family and style run Rudy and Kelly. Find your passion there.

Salvatore Spano could teach us a thing or two about hair. Being one of Rudy & Kelly Acad-emy’s teacher, a stylist him-self, and one of our closest friend, he schools us on what he thinks is in (in the hair world) and what being a teacher really means to him...

So tell us how you started in hair?I started hair bout seven years ago. i was going to school to become a teacher, and knew i that i needed a better job to pay for school, so i went to rudy and kelly hair academy with the mind set of get in get out and get a job to go to school. after being in school for nine months i found a passion in this industry and decided to just pursue this job.

When did you become a teacher?I became a teacher about a year ago.

Do you like teaching more or cutting?Well those are actually my two worlds. i love the teaching aspect and my students find it amazing the knowledge and the things that i have done with my career. cutting though is my passion and my forte. so pursing that behind the chair more than others i knew at the school i wanted to be a paul mitchell cutting specialist.

What do you see yourself doing in the future?I see myself joining the advance academy for cutting within paul mitchell. and what that is, is being a teacher that travels to other schools and teaches classes and certifies other learning leaders (teachers), and doing platform work with pm.

Where do you see hair going in the future? Its so hard to answer that question cause hair changes faster than people blink, but what i see is more of a symmetry cuts and bolder colors which i am very stoked about.

Tell us about your best moment as a stylist? A teacher? The best moment thus far behind the chair is doing hair at new york fashion week for chris-tian siriono, and meeting him and hedi klum backstage and to have my work photographed for nyc fashion week. as a teacher the best ever is seeing a future professional thank you after they graduate and telling you that i am them mentor. What would you say your techinque is? Do you even have a signuture techique or look?My technique would be my cutting skills, give me a blank canvas and i can produce work as well as picaso. my signature look would be short victoria beckham bobs. love love love cut-ting them, and victoria secret looks for people who are ready to hit the town.

Do you do ethnic hair?Yes i have a very steady clientel of ethnic hair, love doing relaxers and getting the trust of my clients.

What are you favorite styles out now? Least favorite?

My favorite styles are short edgy, funky, and textured hair. my leas favorite would be people who are stuck with the same cut. its time to update and look sexy and sassy

What do you want people to know about you and your profession?I want people to know that I work very hard and i am very passionate about my cuts, colors, and blow outs. that if your ever in a funk you can always come to me, or if you have a stylist that wont do something new to come on in and lets have some fun. our industry is always growing and finding new ways to do things at a faster time or even for a reasonable price. to not be afraid to do something different cause its hair, it grows back..lol...
