FOUR PRINCIPLES:-1. Replacing the rule of thumb

by Scientific methods.2. Selecting, training,

teaching and develop the workman.

Explanation:-Bethlehem Steel company, in 1898.

Had 5 blast furnace.Gang of 75 person were formed.

Each man loaded in average of 12.5 tons per day.

Scientific study showed that a person can handle between 47-48 tons per day. (1st Principle)

We observed a gang for 3-4 days.

Selected the best four.Finally selected Schmidt , a Pennsylvania Dutchman.(2nd Principle).

Salary was increased from $1.15 per day to $1.85 per day.

Schmidt had to load 47 tons per day and management would provide a man to instruct him in attaining this goal. (3rd Principle)

A man from management accompanied him. Instructed him, cooperated him, as well as took care of himand strength. (4th Principle).

RESULT:-Schmidt loaded 47.5 tons per day.Increment of more than 200%.Schmidt got higher salary.Maximum benefit to both employer and employee.
