Head of Welfare Corner Assalamu-Aleikum On the 24th of October the Senior SRC team took part in bringing awareness to breast and gynaecological cancers that affect at least 50 women in Australia every day. The team had treated all of the secondary staff with cupcakes promoting the importance of being aware and accepting the issues faced by women with symptoms and the aftermath of cancer. Iman Khan Captain On the 26th October 2019 the College also participated in National Bandanna Day for the benefit of CanTeen, the Australian Organisation for Young People Living with Cancer to help in further research and support young people affected by cancer. Furthermore, on the 2nd of November 2019 the students of AICS took part in the campaign “Mission for Vision” to help out with 700 cataract surgeries in Indonesia. A cataract is a clouding of the clear lens in the eye and is one of the leading causes of blindness. Cataracts are curable! The surgeries involve removing the clouded lens and replacing it with a clear bionic one, after which the patient will instantly be able to see again. Collected donations towards the Mission for Vision campaign was $1500 and for Bandanna Day was $2000.

We would like to extend our appreciation to the parents for their support and cooperation, and Insha’Allah together we will have an impact in campaigns as such to ease calamities of others. Ms Abir Moukahal Head of Welfare

Making a Splash!

For the past four weeks, Kindergarten students have been participating in swimming lessons at the local pool. Each Monday, students arrive at school buzzing with energy that it is their swimming day. The excitement is contagious and it has been wonderful seeing the students so motivated to learn such an essential life skill. In each lesson, the students have started to develop basic skills in swimming. The instructors have paid close attention to the students’ needs and have been working with them in small groups during each lesson. Each week the students have learnt something new that will be invaluable to their future. Students have learnt to be safe at the pool, to follow instructions given by their swimming coaches and how to use swimming aids while moving in the water. The students have had such a great time at their swimming lessons. The Kindergarten teachers have enjoyed seeing the students so happy and excited to become safe swimmers.

Year One Swimming!

Year 1 has been actively involved in an essential swimming program. Students were all assessed in week three and have been working on the skills they specifically need to focus on for water safety and swimming protocols for their safekeeping. Students have come very prepared for their swimming lessons with all their required gear so well organised. This has helped with the smooth transition from school to the swimming centre. On arrival at the swimming centre, students are in such a good routine with having their belongings neatly arranged so as to not forget any items. Students have one-on-one time with their instructor to work on particular skills. Student have shown such maturity through their self-help and dressing abilities, and have impressed teachers with how independent they can be. Moreover, swimming lessons are so much fun, and it has been an absolute joy watching the Year 1 students become so water safe.

Year Two Cricket!

Term 4 is always an exciting term and what if we add cricket to it? It makes it even more exciting and thrilling! Year Two students are having a terrific term because they are busy learning and playing cricket with the Woolworths Cricket Blast program. The students are not only having a lot of fun but they are also learning new skills including catching, throwing and teamwork.

Every Wednesday all the Year Two students, get cricket coaching from two

professional instructors, who also bring the necessary equipment. The coaches demonstrate a cricket skill and then let the students practice that skill in groups or small teams. These highly entertaining PE lessons let the students have some fun and allow them to enjoy the competitive spirit of the game.

Keep us healthy!

Last term, Year 3 students worked on how to keep us healthy in PDH. They also learnt how smoking causes harm to oneself. Students jointly created some posters on the negative effects of smoking.

Last week it was 3B’s turn to host the assembly. 3B performed an excellent show on the stage. They showed the story ‘The Gruffallo’ on the stage. Although the sound system was not that great on the day, the students were very happy playing their roles on the stage.

PDHPE Program Term 4

The focus in the Sports component of the Year Four PDHPE program this term is Cricket Skills. A team from Cricket NSW has been coming to the school running cricket programs in which students have been able to practise cricket skills: batting, bowling, catching and throwing. The students have thoroughly enjoyed their cricketing experience and many of them showcased some natural talent in the sport. It would be no surprise if one of them grew up to play for the Australian Cricket team!

Year 6 Camp at Broken Bay Sports and Recreation Centre.

On 28th October some of our Year 6 students went on a School Camp at Broken Bay Sports and Recreation Centre to celebrate their achievement in the final year of primary schooling. Our students have thoroughly enjoyed their sleeps in the comfortable lodges, tasted delicious Halal meals at the dining hall, and challenged themselves in different activities including kayaking, raft building, bushwalking, rope course, archery, night games and team building challenges. Throughout the activities, students have developed skills in communication, problem solving, cooperation, negotiation, respect and care. They have nurtured an appreciation of the natural environment and sustainability. In addition, they have learned the importance of physical activity for wellbeing and collaborated, negotiated and reflected on difficult challenges to build courage and strength. While the Year 6 camp goers were having fun, those who were at school also had some fun of their own. A day of Laser Tag day was organised for them at Elizabeth Jonnson Reserve, just a short walk from the school. The mobile Laser Tag company, Laser Warriors drove out and set up an obstacle and brought the laser blasters for the students to play with. The Year 6s were able to play games like capture the flag, infection, protect the president all with the laser equipment. The students had fun running around, planning their strategies and winning the different games. As the year is approaching to the end, I wish all of our year 6 families restful holiday and a successful 2019. Marcus Lu Stage 3 Coordinator

Best Borrowing classes The following classes had the highest number of borrowers each week who returned their books, borrowed new books and propelled their learning so far this year.

Kinder KE Year 3 3A Year 1 1E Year 4 4D Year 2 2B Year 5 5A

Each class received a certificate to hang in the classroom and 10 raffle tickets to be handed out for our library treasure chest. The best borrowing classes for term 4 will be announced when we cease our borrowing for the year in week 6.

Buddy Reading

Our younger students are continuing to enjoy their buddy reading time during their library lesson. The older students are doing a great job with enthusiastic

reading to ensure their audience is engaged.

Book hospital This year, we have a book hospital in the library for our broken books to wait to get repaired. A lot of our books have been well loved and frequently borrowed and so they need a bit of extra care to make sure we can still

have them in our collection.

Computer Coding Years 2-5 are continuing to work on their ‘Hour of Code’ using code.org in the library.

Many students have completed the set activity and moving on

to another coding activity.

Library Treasure Box winners During week 4, some hardworking students had their names pulled out of the library treasure chest. They are pictured with their brand new book that is theirs to keep!

As the weather becomes warmer, students are encouraged to wear school appropriate hats whilst outdoors at all times, particularly during PE and Sports lessons. Students are also reminded to apply sunscreen and bring a re-usable water bottle with them to keep well hydrated. Also, with the current wild fires burning in the bushland around the state, students who may suffer from medical conditions that will be exacerbated by poor air quality such as asthma, must bring any required medicine with them to the College and make their teacher aware, if they have not already. Student medical records should always be updated with the office. The College will also take precautionary measures to reduce the risks of exposure to extreme to weather conditions and poor air quality, when necessary. A reminder to parents and students leading into the end of 2019 and planning for 2020, College PE/Sports Uniforms must be worn with appropriate sports shoes. This needs to be planned for if purchasing new uniforms in the new school year. Shoes that have little support at the ankle and heel, with poor grip on the sole such as canvas casual wear, are not permitted. Purchasing expensive brand shoes is not a requirement but ensuring the students can comfortably participate in a range of activities on a variety of surfaces is important. Safety and comfort of student’s is always a priority and support in this area is greatly appreciated. A further congratulation goes to the Green Kookaburras who were victorious in this year’s Athletics Carnival following many years of missing out on the top position. The challenge now is for them to go back to back in 2020 as the teams below strive to take the trophy from the now laughing, Green Kookaburras. This year’s Secondary School Camp will run at the end of November, In’shaa’Allah. Students who have signed up to attend are eager to travel to the beautiful South Coast of NSW for a few days of fun and adventure. The College looks forward to continually growing this event and having more and more students participate in what is a wonderful schooling opportunity.
