Principal’s Report Mrs Redrup
Mrs Redrup visited Kariong Public School last week to announce that she will be retiring next term. After a long and successful career in education with many years as a school principal at Pretty Beach, Hornsby Heights and of course here at Kariong, it is wonderful to see Mrs Redrup enjoying time with her husband, grandchildren and family. Mrs Redrup plans to visit the students soon to say goodbye. Mrs Redrup has been a wonderful leader of Kariong Public School for the past 6 years and I know she will be dearly missed. We wish her all the best for the future and a happy healthy retirement. Staffing will fill the principal position here during Term 2.
Deputy Principal Position
Mrs Justine Abell has relinquished her position as Deputy Principal of Kariong PS. Staffing notified me late last week that Ms Sondra Broadhurst has been appointed to Kariong as the substantive deputy from the start of Term 2. Mrs Rayner has been in this position for the past 18 months and has been an outstanding leader and mentor. Although this position has been filled, Mrs Rayner will remain in the office and will continue to work closely with myself and Ms Broadhurst. Sport in Schools Australia –Term 2 and 3 Gymnastics program Sport in Schools will commence again next term for Kindergarten and Year 1 and in Term 3 for Years 2-6. The program is delivered in sequential steps to allow children of all levels of skill and fitness to participate safely and achieve their personal best. This program is designed to provide a fun and challenging environment that is fundamental for a child’s growth and development. Each week, specialised teachers and instructors will deliver a range of lessons with a focus on high engagement. A note has been sent home today with costs and permission if you would like your child to be included in this program.

Anti-Bullying Message at Kariong PS Last Friday was National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. In recognition of this day, all classes participated in anti-bullying lessons during PDHPE that focused on core anti-bullying messages encouraging students to ’take a stand together’ against bullying in schools. The ‘Bullying. No Way!’ government website provides information, ideas and resources to teachers, students, parents and young children and can be accessed at: http://bullyingnoway.gov.au/. A flyer was sent home last week outlining the different activities that we are participating in for the National Day of action against bullying.
Harmony Day ‘Everyone Belongs’ Yesterday was Harmony Day and it was great to see so many students wear an orange item of clothing which is the official colour of Harmony Day. The ongoing theme of this day is that ‘everyone belongs.’ Each year on March 21, we celebrate all the successes as a culturally diverse country. Harmony Day is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians regardless of cultural or linguistic background. Some of our students discussed cultural diversity at our morning assembly whilst our Years 5 and 6 students held up flags from around the world. In class, the students had discussions about different cultures, our diversities and, as a nation, how we can work together to ensure that we all feel that we belong. Thank you to Mrs White for organising this special day at school. See photos further ahead in this Newsletter.
Swimming Champions Today at a special assembly our swimming champions were awarded their ribbons and certificates. I would like to congratulate all of our students for achieving success at our school carnival for 2019.

The Protectors Performance
As part of our Kariong Public School student wellbeing program, we have organised a performance
called, ‘The Protectors’ from Brainstorm Productions, on Friday March 28. This is a whole school
initiative and supports the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (March 15)
The Protectors come to the rescue with their live theatre program, providing students with
important life lessons including resilience, perseverance and how to manage adversity, especially
when dealing with bullying. Using research-based strategies, The Protectors and their ‘Protector
Tools’ will help students learn how to handle bullies and understand how they can intervene safely
to support children who are being bullied. Students will come to appreciate that all people deserve
to be treated with kindness and respect.
The Protectors is part of our student wellbeing curriculum and the program has been developed in
consultation with teachers, psychologists, as well as real-life student experiences. The
methodology of the program is safe, supportive and nonjudgmental and designed to provide
students with positive and useful tools that they can use in their everyday lives.
More than 350,000 Australian students have already benefited from Brainstorm Productions multi
award-winning educational theatre programs over the past twelve months. Their programs cater
to the specific wellbeing needs of students, helping to create a healthy and harmonious school
environment. If you would like to know more about Brainstorm Productions, visit their website at:

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Change and loss are issues all of us face at some stage of our lives. At Kariong Public School we
recognise that when changes occur in families through death, separation, divorce or related
circumstances, young people may benefit from learning how to manage these changes effectively.
We are therefore offering a very successful education program called Seasons For Growth. This
program is facilitated in small groups and is based on research that highlights the importance of
social support and the need to practice new skills to cope effectively with change and loss. The
program focuses on issues such as self-esteem, managing feelings, problem solving, decision making,
effective communication and support networks.
Seasons For Growth runs for 8 weeks in school hours and each weekly session is 40-45 minutes. The
program concludes with a ‘celebration’ session. Later in the year each group will have the
opportunity to meet for a further session to build on their earlier learning. There is no cost involved.
Seasons For Growth will commence in Week 5 Term 2 for years 1-6. If you think your son or
daughter would benefit from this program, we would encourage you to talk to him/her about this.
Should he/she decide to participate, please fill in the form attached and return to the office by
Monday 13th May. Please also include a brief reason for participation eg divorce, death etc.
If you require further information or have any questions please contact me at school on 4340 1885.
Kariong Public School is pleased to be able to offer this important program and we are confident
that it will be a valuable learning experience for those who request to be involved.

NAPLAN INFORMATION FOR PARENTS
NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy – important skills that each child needs to succeed in school
and life. The NAPLAN tests are designed to help us make sure students are on track with their
literacy and numeracy development. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in NAPLAN tests for
reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
Between May 14 and May 24, our school will participate in NAPLAN Online. Students do not need to
be computer experts to take the NAPLAN test online. Making sure students have computer skills is
part of our school curriculum, and our teachers will ensure your child is familiar with the online
format. To see the types of questions and interactive features of NAPLAN Online, visit the public
demonstration site.
If you have any questions about NAPLAN Online, please contact Mrs Rayner or your child’s teacher.
