It was an absolute delight, as always, to enjoy morning tea with these students. They certainly demonstrated their personal best by displaying lovely manners as they shared morning tea and spoke about why they were recognised for their award. I would like to thank our parents for continuing to support our school by encouraging your children to embrace our three PBL values. Senior Debating Team Success! Congratulations to our senior debating team for their recent success against Somersby Public School in the first of four debates taking place in our local area. Maggie, our School Captain and a member of the debating team has written these words about the day. On Thursday 21 May, five nervous but excited students from Kariong Public School debated Somersby Public school in our first debate this year. The topic both sides ultimately selected was ‘Should we replace Scripture with Ethics classes?’ Kariong lost the coin toss and had to debate the negative opinion. We had one hour to prepare our debate, before Miss Taylor came and told us it was time. It was a very close debate, with both sides posing very strong arguments for their case. Kariong PS won the debate by a close margin. We look forward to our next debate against Peats Ridge Public school. Multicultural Speech Finals I look forward to hearing Stage 2 and Stage 3 finalists presenting their Multicultural speeches in the hall next week. Congratulations to all; the teachers have been telling me the standard of speeches has been exceptional. Vicki Redrup

Principal’s Report

Value of the Month – Personal Best

Our Value of the Month presentation ceremony took place last Friday 15 May. 23 students received their certificates and badges as recognition for always doing their PERSONAL BEST.

Multicultural Speech Finals

I look forward to hearing Stage 2 and Stage 3 finalists presenting their Multicultural speeches in the hall next week. Congratulations to all; the teachers have been telling me the standard of speeches has been exceptional.

GRIP Leadership Conference

On Tuesday, 10 school leaders attended the GRIP Leadership

Conference in Gosford with Mrs Priest and Miss Taylor. It was

an excellent experience for both teachers and students. The

conference highlighted specific strategies on how to become

an effective leader. After such a motivational day, the leaders

already have plans in place on how they can make a

difference at Kariong Public School. The leaders have

specifically addressed two priority areas within the school and

they are currently working with the SRC to address these

areas of concern.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)

On Monday all students participated in a lesson

which focused on how everyone can demonstrate our

three school values when in a particular area of the

school. This week’s focus was the expectations when

you are attending an assembly in the Hall. In this

lesson school wide expectations were addressed and

students were taught specific skills on how they can

behave positively during assembly. These skills were

reinforced throughout the week. Please read the

copy of this poster which is displayed in the school

hall and in classrooms. This poster will act as a

constant reminder to everyone about the

expectations we have at Kariong Public School when

attending an assembly.

It is the responsibility of everyone at Kariong

Public School to ensure these values are

displayed at all times.

Student Representative Council (SRC)

Thankyou to all the families who returned their Stewart House envelope on Monday. A total

of $201 was raised. This is a great effort. It would be fantastic if somebody at Kariong

Public School was the winner of the $4000 holiday! Fingers crossed!

Year 3 Under the Sea.

During the year, our Year 3 students will be studying

Under the Sea. This is a HSIE (Human Society and

its Environment) unit that asks students to reflect

upon the impact that humans make on a marine

environment and how they can assist in preserving

this habitat for future generations. Next month our

excursion will take us to Terrigal and Bateau Bay to

view these watery worlds first hand. As a proud

teacher I have included a photo of our classroom

display depicting ‘Under the Sea’. Amanda Taylor
