On Monday this week our entire staff spent the day working with Glen Pearsall, a literacy expert, to discuss and develop ways to improve the way we help students develop their literacy skills. This will continue to be an area of priority for the staff over the next term and into 2017. In addition the College has appointed Ms Sarah Garnaut to the position of Literacy Coordinator to lead literacy growth within the College. We also welcomed two new staff members to the College. Ms Courtney Dodd who will be working in the areas of Maths and Science, Mr Damian Lawlor who will be working in the area of English and Ms Carolina Manariti will be working in the area of Textiles and Food Technology. At the end of Term 2 the College was sad to say goodbye to Hanieh Langroodi who has decided to take time to travel and to Mr Stephen Cameron who has taken leave to teach in England. Mrs Gillian Donald is also retiring this week and we wish her well as she enjoys her many interests outside teaching. The College will miss her contribution to so many areas in the College, especially her commitment to the Music Department. AWARDS Reports were available via Compass for all students at the end of Term 2. The College’s reporting process is a integral part of our communication with parents/guardians and how we as a College support the learning of students. Over the next few weeks the College will be handing out academic awards based on mid year results to recognise those students who have achieved at one of the following levels: Honours, High Distinction, Distinction and Credit levels. In addition, in Home Groups students will be reflecting on their results and setting goals for the remainder of 2016. Both the celebration of success and the review of Semester One results are important at this time of year. COURSE SELECTIONS Students currently in Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 will be required to make decisions about the courses they intend studying in 2017. I urge all students to take this process very seriously and make time to discuss their options with teachers at the College and their parents/guardians. BOYS FOOTBALL

What a day! Well a very cold one at that, however our Year 8 boys AFL football team were on fire! What a change 12 months can make, from losing both games to Norwood and Ringwood in Year 7 to beating them in Year 8 quite convincingly. A massive effort for the boys which they should be very proud of. Winning these two games means they now qualify for Zone finals. They were placed in pool 2 against Brentwood, Heathmont and Monbulk. The boys were confident they could do well. There was a good feeling about them going into game 1 against Brentwood.

Game 1 – Mooroolbark v Brentwood Brentwood had the breeze and kicked the first two goals, to each and everyone of the boy’s credit they did not drop their heads and stayed positive. By halfway we had a 3 point lead against the breeze, a second half domination saw our boys walk away with a four goal win. This game was led by our two captains Hayden Daniels and Cooper Foulis, with Fraser Sheridan running the wing and putting his body on the line for his team mates, Tyler Charlton was plucking everything in his area and Daniel Phillips was clean down low whilst Lachie Love was hitting hard and applying pressure acts. Game 2 – Mooroolbark v Heathmont Kicking against the breeze did not faze our boys one bit and were able to play the game in our half, this game saw our halfback line take control of the game with the likes of Nathan Rancie, Alistair Johansen and Jordan Blair cleaning up anything that came out of our back line and sending it straight back over their heads. Our forwards proved their value with Tom Sheridan kicking 3 off the forward flank, Liam brown snapping a nice goal, Brendan Magee beginning a magician around the ball and kicking a couple. A dominant display by all resulting in a 10 goal win. Game 3 Mooroolbark v Monbulk Well it came down to this game to see if we would progress to the Zone Final against Rowville. All results suggested it was going to be a close battle with Monbulk winning both their games convincingly. This game was going to be a battle and what a battle it was! Again our boys kicking into the breeze during the first half, with Monbulk taking an early 14 point lead. You may have forgiven the boys for dropping their heads slightly, however the opposite took place, the voice started to lift and the belief was evident. Against the breeze the boys ran, carried and tackled with determination. It was impressive to watch and when the half time siren was blown it was a 7 point deficit. The boys still had belief and hunger for the game, with outstanding efforts from Hayden and Cooper getting to and being involved in every contest. Alistair Johansen and Tom Griffin stopping a dangerous forward, both the Sheridan boys putting their bodies on the line. Our forward pressure was exceptional and when Tyler Charlton chased a player down from full forward, it was evident they would not die fighting. With 3 minutes left Mooroolbark were down by 1 point and had missed a handful of set shots, was it going to be our day? Up steps Brendan Magee, after missing a couple straight out in front, he was able to steady from a 45 degree angle and slot one though from 35 metres to put us up by 5 points, With some nervous moments in the last 2 minutes, the boys held on to win and advance to the Zone Final against Rowville which will be held on Tuesday 26

th July at

East Burwood reserve. Hope to see as many supporters as possible. Matthew Bell
