Valuable information was shared by parents, students and teachers to support improvements in planning for individual learning. Staff believe that their conversations at this time of the year are very valuable to ensure that students are supported and involved in their learning. An opportunity to connect and share information, concerns, highlights and particular strengths makes a significant difference to children’s success and levels of happiness at school. If you were unable to book an interview time during the sessions available, please contact your child’s teacher to make a time later this term or early in Term 2. We look forward to further ‘stretching’ children’s learning and providing challenges during Term 2. After School Pick Up Teachers’ yard duties finish at 3:30pm and they are then responsible to ensure all children have an adult with them. If there is no adult, children are taken to the front office. This is resulting in the office area being inundated with children after 3:30 and our front office staff having to contact many parents. Our school has made a decision to have teachers walk the children to OSHC where they will wait for their families. There will, of course be a small fee to the families as negotiated by OSHC. NAPLAN In Week 3 of next term, students in Years 3, 5 and 7 will be involved in NAPLAN tests from the 15th -17th May. If you have questions about the tests or would like more information, please contact your child’s teacher or go to www.naplan.edu.au. Pupil Free Day As we have swimming in Weeks 5 and 6 next term our Pupil Free Day will follow the long weekend, Tuesday 12th June (Week 7). As this is the last newsletter for this term I wish all families a safe and enjoyable Easter and holiday break. Remember that Friday 13th April is the last day of term with early dismissal at 2:15pm. Term 2 starts on Monday 30th April. Kind regards, Sharon Rich Principal

Dear Families,

Thank you to all the families who participated in three way interviews during Week 8. At AVPS we celebrated Harmony Day with special events throughout the week.On Tuesday March 20th the upper primary students in the Melaleuca building enjoyed a presentation from Community Liaison Officer, Bushra Rasheed. Bushra compared the English alphabet to the Arabic alphabet. By the end of the session the students were able to write their name in Arabic. They really enjoyed the presentation and learnt more about the Arabic culture. On Wednesday March 21st our school was decorated with Harmony Day displays showing “Everyone Belongs” and orange streamers, balloons and artwork decorated our school. Orange is a bold colour and as a whole school we say NO TO RACISM. Students and staff were all encouraged to wear something orange. At the beginning of the day all classes were presented with orange Harmony Day ribbons or Harmony Day stickers. In the Grevillia building we had Community Liaison Officer, Olga Luchich, talk about the Serbian culture and the Serbian alphabet. Olga had many Serbian artefacts to share with the students. In the Callistemon building students enjoyed a session where Bosnian cheese pita was made and afterwards they were able to taste this delicious food. Community Liaison Officer, Mirsada Fenn, shared many Bosnian artefacts with the students, as well as the Bosnian flag and flags from all over the world. At lunch and recess the Acacia students enjoyed a variety of games and activities where they matched flags with bears, fished for Harmony Day fish, played bean bag in the hop, knock’em down and made a variety of Harmony Day craft activities. On Friday at assembly our school choir sang ‘Dare To Be Square’ so beautifully under the direction of Lisa Williamson. Our school staff ended the week with orange food to share for lunch.Thank you everyone for getting involved. It was a fabulous day celebrating everyone’s cultural background.

Important Reminders

Harmony Day

Interested in volunteering at AVPS?

Students are reminded that toys are not allowed at school. This includes slime and trading cards. The school is not liable for any toys lost or damaged.

We are experiencing a number of children that are having toilet accidents and unfortunately we do not have many spare items for them to change into. Can parents please provide a spare change of clothes in their child’s bag. If your child has come home with clothing items from our school can you please wash and return them. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Parents are reminded that staff car parks are NOT for parents to park in while dropping off or picking up students. Our staff are having difficulty in finding car parks as parents are taking up these spots. Parents also need to be aware that Playford Council often do random checks to ensure that people are obeying signage outside our school.

Play Is The Way® (PITW)Through this training the research was clear that social and emotional education cannot be left to chance and that explicit teaching of social and emotional skills is essential for children to achieve their best socially, emotionally and academically. Therefore we are excited to announce that the Social and Emotional Wellbeing Program to be delivered R-7 at Angle Vale Primary is Wilson McCaskil PLAY IS THE WAY® (PITW).

Play is the Way is a practical methodology for teaching social and emotional learning using guided play, classroom activities and an empowering language. Through active class games students are supported to develop skills in responsible decision making, resilience and empathy. The program’s language is simple and specific to support the fostering of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and social management.

Classes will be learning about the 5 Key concepts that will be used as a reference point when educating students about behaviour through the program. The 5 Key Concepts are:

1. The GOLDEN RULE: Treat others as you would like them to treat you.

2. Be Brave Participate to Progress We do the right thing because it’s the best thing to do. School is about stepping bravely into the unknown. The unknown is often uncomfortable. The braver you are, the more you will learn.

3. Pursue Your Personal Best No Matter Who You Work With. We don’t come to school to be better than others. We come to school to better ourselves by being able to work with others.

4. Have Reasons For the Things You Say and Do If you don’t know why you’re doing something then don’t do it because it’s most likely wrong.

5. It takes Great Strength to be Sensible We do the right thing because it’s the best thing to do.

There is also a SELF-MASTERY CHECKLIST to help guide student’s behaviour • Am I doing the right thing or the wrong thing?• Am I making a strong decision or a weak decision?• Are my feelings in charge of my actions or is my thinking in charge?• Am I running away from the problem or am I dealing with it?• Am I being my own boss or am I inviting my teacher to be my boss?• Is my teacher trying to help me or hurt me?

At Angle Vale Primary our teachers have been trained to use Play Is The Way effectively and it is used in all classrooms. Our social work students, also trained, are also using the approach in games and activities with small groups.

Room A5 Community InformationHere in room A5 we have been learning our letters and sounds. We sing songs and actions to help us remember. We have fun working on our letter formation through different activities. We use shaving cream, glitter salt, play dough, water painting, chalk, whiteboards, stones and rainbow writing. Here are a few photos of us in action.
