After paying for running costs, prizes and awards, this year we raised a total of $4850.33 from our annual major fundraiser – The Obstathon. We had an amazing 20 students fundraise $100 or more each. As a sign of appreciation for their efforts, they each received a medal which was presented to them on parade. Well done to all on the list (see left).

Medals were also given to the 2nd and 3rd highest fundraisers, and a trophy was awarded to the highest fundraiser for the year. Their name was also put on a trophy/shield that stays at school.

Congratulations and thanks to these top 3 fundraisers for 2019.Oh, nearly forgot. Pizza party class winners.

Congratulations 2A and 3A for raising the most money as a class and earning themselves a pizza party.

Positive Behaviour for LearningThe Positive Behaviour for Learning focus this week is... Mindfulness.

This technique will take you through your five senses to help to remind you of the present. This is a calming technique that can help you get through tough or stressful situations.

Take a deep breath to begin…

5 - LOOK: Look around for 5 things that you can see and say them out loud.

For example, you could say: I see the computer, I see the cup, I see the picture

frame.

4 - FEEL: Pay attention to your body and think of 4 things that you can feel

and say them out loud. For example, you could say: I feel my feet warm in my

socks, I feel the hair on the back of my neck or I feel the chair I am sitting on.

3 - LISTEN: Listen for 3 sounds. It could be the sound of traffic outside, the sound of typing or the sound of your

tummy rumbling. Say the three things out loud.

2 - SMELL: Say two things you can smell. If you’re allowed to, it’s okay to move to another spot and sniff something.

If you can’t smell anything at the moment or you can’t move, then name your 2 favourite smells.

1 - TASTE: Say one thing you can taste. It may be the toothpaste from brushing your teeth or the sandwich you ate

at lunch. If you can’t taste anything, then say what your favourite thing is to taste.

Take another deep breath and let it all out slowly…

All welcome

Coffee Club will commence in Term 4, Week 1: Tuesday 2-3pm in the Patio area of the Hall.

Week 1— Ice-cream colours Understanding colour is a tool for learning many skills. For example when children learn to see similarities and differences between colours, they are using the same skills they need to see the differences between letters and numbers.

Week 2— Patterns are everywhere. Children need to be able to see and recognise patterns around them so they can learn to read and write. It is also an important part of Maths.

Week 3 — Happy & Sad This learning experience helps children recognise emotions and talk about their feelings.

Week 4— Hungry Shark Puppet This activity gives children counting practice. They can also talk about colours and sizes.

Year 2 News

Year 3 News

Justin Cheng – WRSS Tennis Star!

3C NewsSharing and Fractions In the past few weeks, students in 2A worked on their mathematical reasoning through some fun and creative activities . They worked on DIVISION by sharing cookies equally. The key learning was that each share had to be fair! More cooking happened as the students made FRACTION pizzas. They had a choice of mushrooms, pepperoni, tomato, pineapple, ham, olives and capsicum to add as toppings. The students then identified the fraction of each ingredient on their pizzas as they completed a pizza profile.

The focus for Year 3 in English this term has been on report writing. This means learning skills such as researching, note taking and writing the notes into sentences. The students have been very busy writing a report on one of the following places: Pinnacles, Blue Mountains or Shark Bay.

After writing a draft and editing it, the students are typing their reports on the computer. In addition to learning how to type a document we have been learning other skills like copying and pasting pictures or using hyperlinks. When not using the computers for publishing, the Year 3s are learning how to code.

In Geography at the moment the focus is on the names of Australia’s states and territories, reading legends on maps, directions of places using the compass points of north, south, east and west and the different climate zones.

Year 3s have also been investigating graphs more closely this term, as part of Maths but also linking in with understanding and interpreting climate data. Bar graphs and line graphs have been fully explored and the children have hugely enjoyed guided construction of rainfall graphs.

In Art we have been looking at patterns. This knowledge is being used to create artwork in preparation for NAIDOC Week.

Well done to Justin Cheng for all of his amazing tennis accomplishments. Justin trains and plays tennis almost every night of the week and he has attended many tournaments around the state. He was also invited as 1 of 15 to attended the Rod Laver Age and Churchie Junior Championships in Brisbane during the school holidays (5-14 July 2019). This was very difficult for Justin as he was up against players from Singapore, Hong Kong and New Zealand. He also attended a special clay court training session with Queensland Tennis Talent Manager Anthony Richardson at the Pat Rafter Arena in Brisbane. His coach, Guy Thomas from Edmonton Tennis Club, sees a lot of potential in Justin and has high hopes for him one day as Justin demonstrates exceptional spirit and special talent in tennis. Well done Justin, you’ve done White Rock proud!

Having a dance party and some free time are part of our money reward system in 3C. The students earn pretend money to buy coupons that they’d like. One of our biggest valued coupons is a dance party and both Lilly and Tyson could finally redeem their coupons in Week 7. A songlist was compiled and they danced or coloured their afternoon away to the flashing disco ball. Well done 3C for working hard all term.

P&C Working Bee

Book Week Competition Winners

Father’s Day Stall Thank You

Our school Working Bee was fun! It was so good to see parents, staff and even community members come along to help with jobs around the school. Noel was the Task Master and directed us all well. Gardens were mulched, dug, chopped and planted up. Paths were cleaned and lots of other odd jobs were done.

It was such a good feeling as we sat down to our perfectly sautéed sausages on bread after a solid morning of work. Thank you to everyone who came along!

Thanks to FNQTPI President Phil Burcher and his lovely wife Sue who came to the school on Tuesday morning to present us with a $1,000 cheque to go towards our Breakfast Program. FNQTPI stands for ‘Far North Queensland Totally and Permanently Incapacitated’ (TPI) - a group for ex-service people who have become disabled as a result of an injury whilst serving in the Armed Forces (Navy, Army or Airforce)’. This great group of people asked me for a local project that would benefit from the donation. Their donation is such a help and will keep the toast and eggs flowing in our Breakfast Program! WIN TV were there interviewing too, so it was quite a morning.

Remember we always need volunteers for our Breakfast Program, so let myself or the girls in the Office know if you are interested.

Until next time, make sure you enjoy this gorgeous weather!

Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 20 minutes until thickened.3. Stir through coriander. Serve chilli con carne with rice, baked potato or corn chips and top with a dollop of sour cream.
