big parts10Discuss with students that when an has a big body part, like eyes, that shows that the sense associated with the body part is the strongest sense.

seeing 11Birds have the best vision of all animals and we will do an experiment based on a hawks vision which is 20/5 as compared to 20/20 of a human. What this fraction means is that hawks can see from 20 feet what we see at a distance of five feet.

smelling

12Discuss how large the deers nose is ----- what sense do they have that is extra strong? The sense of smell. Then share information about the hoofs of deer that have a scent pocket on the bottom of each hoof so that with every step they leave a scent trail. In this way they can follow each other if they are lost.

tasting 13Note how long this tongue is ----what sense does this represent? The sense of smell. With a tongue like that theres a whole lot of tasting going on!

tasting14Note that there is no spit/saliva on the tongue --- this is to introduce the idea of when the tongue is dry it can not taste but when the tongue is wet you are able to taste.touching

15Remind students that the walrus uses their whiskers to touch/find food to see if they want to eat it.Photo from http://walrus.wr.usgs.gov/walrus.html

touching16What kind of animal is this? An octopus. What does it use to touch with? Suction cups on its tentacals.

hearing

17Ask students, what do we know about this animals senses? Big ears means it can hear very well and a big nose means it has a strong sense of smell too.

hearingDataStudio.lnk18Share with students that this is the noise that a bat makes when it is hunting insects at night. Sound bite is made by a British noctule bat but this picture is of a Spotted bat --- students do not need to know this, this is for your information in case someone asks you about it. Have you ever SEEN a sound?VOICE ANALYSIS19Must have loaded the software before opening PPT for the hyperlink to work.
