Our final newsletter for 2018. Earlier this week we had our very successful Presentation evening. Our Guest Speaker was former student Sonia Fowler, who is now the current

editor of The River News. It was terrific to hear her story and the message of ‘never say never’. Sonia clearly has fond memories of her schooling and is certainly passionate about Waikerie.

Alannah Cheshire arrived at Waikerie High School in

2001 and has been teaching for over 35 years.

Alannah has greatly contributed in many areas

across the school but her biggest impact has been in

the mathematics curriculum. We wish Alannah all the

best in her retirement.

Tim Hensel has been our Pastoral Care worker since

arriving in 1998. Over the last 20 years Tim has

worked to improve the wellbeing of students and has

introduced many programs to facilitate this. Tim has

been a key driver of our breakfast club, men’s shed

visits and lunchtime programs. We thank him for the

work and effort he has put in to support both students

and staff at our school.

To all members on the High School Governing Council, I thank you for all your hard work and energy. It has been a pleasure to work with this committee and we are no doubt moving in the right direction with your passion for our school. To our Chairperson, Brendan Sidhu, I thank you for the guidance you have provided the council and school over the past 12 months.

To all staff members, I thank you for your professionalism and hard work to deliver the best learning opportunities for our students. The community is fortunate to have dedicated professionals like yourself who give so much to make sure your students are successful.

To everyone I wish you a restful and enjoyable festive season and I know the staff look forward to seeing the students all refreshed and ready to go for 2019.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Congratulations to all students studying the SACE in 2018.

Year 10s have commenced their SACE journey with the Personal Learning Plan (PLP). I trust that the work in this subject has allowed

students to select appropriate subjects for Year 11 and hence Year 12. Many have taken the opportunity to be involved in VET (Vocational Education & Training) next year.

Furthermore, several Year 10 girls achieved 20 SACE credits for their participation in Operation Flinders. Other students across the year levels also received SACE points for community learning activities such as Lifeguarding, First Aid, Basic Fire Fighting and Music accreditations that were completed outside of school.

Year 11 students have studied a wide range of subjects this year and many have completed Certificate II or Certificate III at TAFE through VET. Some have in fact completed their SACE at the end of Year 11 with a combination of school based subjects and VET.

Year 12 – A very successful year for this cohort. I am very much looking forward to SACE results being published on Tuesday December 18th. I expect a high SACE completion rate and high ATAR scores from this group. Furthermore, I congratulate those who have been successful as school based apprentices and those that left school this year for full time employment.

I wish all the Year 12s the best of luck in their future endeavours and hope they will keep in touch with the school with a visit from time to time.

A big thank you to all Staff, Students, Parents and Volunteers for all the work done in 2018. The year has gone extremely quick, with many successes throughout the year. This is backed up by the results that I have seen in the

students reports this semester. Students have received grades that they have earned throughout the semester, which is a building block for all students to set themselves goals in 2019. Have a great break and I will see you back fresh and ready to go in 2019. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

2018 M&S Charges

2018 M&S Charges are now overdue and need to be finalised URGENTLY. Payment can be made

by cash, cheque, direct debit and credit card. The school offers EFTPOS

facilities with $20 minimum and no cash out.

FRONT OFFICE The front office is closed every Thursday from 2:30pm.

Uniform Shop The Uniform Shop is open Tuesday 3:30pm-4:15pm and Thursday 8:30am-9:00am. All uniforms need to be paid in full at time of purchase either by cash, EFTPOS or cheque.

UNIFORM UPDATE Waikerie High School Governing Council and Uniform Committee have designed a new Waikerie High School student polo shirt, which is bottle green and charcoal grey, this will be introduced to the new 2019 Year 8 students and phased in for current students over the next four years. This will replace the current white and green polo shirt. The price will stay the same at $35.

M&S Charges 2019

Material & Services charges 2019 is set at $345.00. The state government raised the school card income threshold in 2018 to help families with the cost of living. This means that families may be eligible to apply for a school card. School card application forms for 2019 will be available from the school or www.sa.gov.au at the beginning of January 2019 or a paper copy can be filled in on our open days. The school card figure for 2019 is $318.

Mentors Waikerie High School is seeking expressions of interest for the 2019 mentoring program. We are establishing a pool of volunteer mentors to be matched with a student as a part of the mentoring program for 2019. SAASTA

SAASTA Shield - our Riverland students battled it out playing Basketball at Titanium Stadium against the other SAASTA academies. We were very competitive, with our two teams combined winning six, drawing one and losing five. Our shirts this year were designed by Wes Frankel and feature the Murray River bends as it passes Gerard, traditional thatching and Ponde (Murray Cod).

We then moved onto AFLX run by Adelaide Crows legend Andrew McLeod. Again our students played well and won three out of five games. Thursday night we went to the Adelaide Bite and students were lucky enough to be involved in a guard of honour for the players before the game. On Friday morning we had the awards ceremony at Adelaide University, where our Orana Reynolds (Loxton) did a terrific job as MC and Sarah Clark (Glossop) took out the Peer Leadership Award.

The rest of Friday was then spent playing cricket in the city at Park 25, again our students showed great determination and won four out of five games. Based on all the written tasks throughout the semester, our school attendance and our sporting ability we made it into the Grand Final. Our students played on Titanium Stadium just before the Adelaide 36ers match, but unfortunately came up a couple of points short to Murray Bridge. Our students did a fantastic job and should be proud of the way the conducted themselves at the carnival. To make it to the top two out of 21 academies is a terrific effort, hopefully we will go one better next year!

Year 8-10 Girls and Boys Interschool Cricket Waikerie High School competed with both Girls and Boys teams in the Riverland Interschool Cricket competition, held recently on the 30th of November. The first ever girls cricket team to represent Waikerie competed strongly against

more experienced opponents from the other Riverland High Schools, however, they finished the day with three losses from three games. All of the girls represented Waikerie High School with excellent team spirit, and lots of fun. Games were played in a 12 over per side format, with all players given the opportunity to bat, bowl and field.

The boys team were quick off the mark early against Loxton, performing strong with batting and bowling from the beginning. The tight game came down to the wire with Loxton only defeating Waikerie by one single run off of the last ball of the game. The boys held their heads high to immediately take on Renmark and produced another solid performance with only twelve runs difference by the end of the game. Waikerie endured a high scoring game with Glossop to finish the day who had come from two easy victories prior. Waikerie pushed Glossop with steady wickets from the bowlers and fielders combined with high scoring batters who enjoying the magical feeling of hitting fours and sixes over the boundary to display their skills and abilities and were always respected by their opponents displayed team

work and resilience throughout the event earning the respect of the other teams competing. Congratulations to the students that performed at this

year’s Music Night on the Thursday the 1st of November.

The night featured various performances from soloists to large ensembles.

This included performances from: Angelina, Chloe, Lucy, Charmaine, Andrew, Jessica, Gypsy, Tamika, Noah, Erin, Hayley and Nicola.

SHOWCASE NIGHT

On the 6th December we held the annual Showcase night in conjunction with the Year 7 Transition BBQ, to show the community our student work. We also had our 2017 wine launch where Maria Austria was awarded the prize for the wine label design. Throughout the night there were many interactive displays, as well as art work and food by the

students. It finished with some amazing music performances by our students.

A huge thank you to all who came and supported the event.

YEAR 8 HALLET COVE GEOLOGY EXCURSION

On Tuesday the 11th December our budding Year 8 Geologists set off from Waikerie High school bound for the Hallet Cove Conservation Park. They examined 500 million year old metamorphic rocks, and rocks that had markings from a sheet of ice that covered part of South Australia 280 million years ago and studied 2-3 million year old limestone sedimentary rocks.

It was a very warm day but a walk on the beach and cool sea breeze made for a very enjoyable day. Many thanks to Mr Phil Valentine and Mr Paul Tripodi for joining us on the trip.

MESSAGE FROM THE SOCIAL WORKER

As part of the White Ribbon Breaking the Silence Program, Waikerie High School was involved in two events on White Ribbon Day, 23rd November. Year 10 student, Tessa Canney, represented Waikerie High School with six other students across the

state at the White Ribbon Breakfast. She was interviewed by Ron Kandelaars from Channel 7 in front of 1300 guests. Guests included the Premier of SA, Governor of SA, the Minister for Education and the Minister for Child Protection. Students were also interviewed by the Advertiser and have been asked to do further media interviews and involvement with White Ribbon.

Waikerie High School also held an assembly with students Tessa Canney and Cade Ridley on stage with Assistant Principal, Phil Valentine discussing what White Ribbon means to Waikerie High School. The main message was around creating a culture of respectful relationships in the school community and preventing disrespect and future violence particularly towards women.

One in four children are exposed to family/domestic violence. White Ribbon Breaking the Silence Program is a preventative program creating a culture of respectful relationships for now and in the future.

Waikerie High School has also started a White Ribbon group within the Waikerie community with support from external services and community members. This group will be raising awareness in the local community with support from the Waikerie High School staff and students. Please speak to Phil Valentine or Bec Barker for more information.

2017 SHIRAZ AVAILABLE (Ready for Christmas!!)

Waikerie High School has a long standing Winemaking program in which the year 11 Viticulture class produces an annual vintage of wine. The 2017 Shiraz was made by the current year 12 and 11 classes. The wine was launched at the recent Showcase night and we sold a large amount of wine. We still have limited stock and we are making this available to the wider school community. All money raised is put back into the Winemaking program to buy new equipment, resources, and chemicals for the Winemaking venture. If you are looking for Christmas gifts or keepsakes, the wine is $10 a bottle or $100 for a dozen. If you would like to purchase some of the wine, please fill out the order form below, with your preferred pick up time, and hand it to the book room with payment. In order to collect your purchase, you must organise for someone over the age of 18 and not a student of the school, to pick up the bottle(s) at a prearranged time.
