PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Volunteering at School made easier

Many of our parents and guardians volunteer at our school to support their child’s learning.

To make it easier for parents and guardians to volunteer their

time, the Department for Education and Child Development has updated its relevant history screening policy and procedures.

As a result, parents and guardians who volunteer to directly support their child will no longer require a relevant history screening.

This will mean many of our volunteers can help out sooner.

A screening is still necessary for parents and guardians who are volunteering at school camps and sleep overs, as well as those hosting billets and homestay students.

As has always been the case, a screening is not needed to attend single events or activities at our

school. These include concerts, fundraisers, swimming week or sports day.

Screenings are just one measure used to help keep children safe. Everyone who works with children plays a part in child protection, including watching out for inappropriate behaviour.

Find out more about relevant history screening and keeping children safe at www.decd.sa.gov.au.

If you have any questions about screening or these changes, please speak with school staff.

SPANISH STUDY TOUR 2016

Just over 3 weeks ago four of our students took part in a study tour to Spain. Tahlia Cabot, Kayla Mason, Caitlin Curtis and Stuart McClelland who have studied Spanish at school in Year 8 & 9 took part in a DECD organised Spanish Tour. From watching their Tour Blog while they were away it is clear that they practiced and develop their language skills, toured many parts of this wonderful country but also had many experiences that they will cherish for a lifetime.

The Tour organiser and staff member on the tour, Ben Anderson sent this email to me on their return.

“Dear Rob, As I am sure you are aware I have just returned from spending three weeks in Spain on a Study Tour with your students; Kayla, Stuart, Caitlin and Tahlia.

I am writing to you now to let you know that the group of 27 students with which I have just returned from Spain were a credit to their schools and fantastic ambassadors for their country. They were, by a good margin, the easiest group of young adults I have had the pleasure to travel with in my 10 years of taking study tours to and from Europe and Asia. They were polite, punctual, actively engaged in all activities, keen to study and improve their Spanish skillset and respectful of the rules and regulations of the Study Tour, whilst enjoying the available time to its fullest. Everywhere we went in Spain I was consistently complimented on the behaviour and attitude of ‘my’ students by Spanish teachers, activity leaders, bus drivers and all with whom we came into contact. You can be justifiably proud of your students and I would appreciate your passing on my compliments and best wishes for their future studies whenever you next see them.”

Kind regards, Ben Anderson

Congratulations to Kayla, Stuart, Caitlin and Tahlia you have represented your school and community with pride.

Car Parking Please do not park in the staff car park area, located along Blake Road. There are temporary car parks outside of the Administration building if you need to see the administration staff for any reason or have a meeting with a teaching staff member. We would be very

appreciative if all parents / caregivers can support us in this process.

Great News! We are now on facebook, simply search Waikerie High School and like our new page. This is intended to be another form of communication with our school and wider community. If you wish to contact the school please still ring, email or come in and see us. Our facebook presence is purely to keep you updated with all of the amazing things our students do.

MESSAGE FROM THE SOCIAL WORKER

I hope everyone enjoyed the two week break after a long Term 1 and has settled back into Term 2. Staff have been busy working behind the scenes organising some great opportunities for learning and development in regards to mental health and wellbeing. Information will be sent home soon about workshops

and extended learning. I would like to thank the volunteers at the Day Activity Centre. They have kindly donated their time and materials to making ‘Trauma Teddies’ to provide to students experiencing difficulties. A Trauma Teddy is a special bear knitted by volunteers and given to children and adults during traumatic times. It’s a great example of our community working together. Also a reminder I’m available at school every day except every 2nd Wednesday on an odd week. If you have any concerns and would like to speak to me, please phone the school or alternatively students can access support at school.

We have a treat for all students on Thursday 19th May (week 3) 2 seminars will be delivered by 45 dancers from

group ‘One50Dance’.

This is what they say about the seminar: content can include; - dance performances - testimony from the team about how God has been by their side in a very real way through life - interactive dance spots - getting the young people (and teachers) moving! - song items - explanation of the one50 journey and story.....following a God given dream -. our seminars are entertaining, non-threatening, interactive and focus on real and raw young people sharing about a real journey with God.

This is a Christian option seminar. If you wish for your student not to attend, please write a signed note in their diary and alternative supervised study will be arranged.

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SHEEP EXPO

On Wednesday the 27th to Friday 29th April the inaugural SA Sheep Expo was held at the Royal Adelaide Show Grounds. 7 of our Year 8 students

participated in this event, where they looked at animal assessment and junior judging, nutrition, marketing, technology, genetics, handling, biosecurity, careers, wool production, different breeds of sheep and butchering.

On the last day there was also the handling competition, which 3 of our students walked away with ribbons. Patrick Liebich placed first in the first group of the junior handling competition and Levi Whitehead and Kanella Mihalopoulos received second and third respectively in the second group of junior handling competition. The final overall result saw both Patrick and Levi achieve joint third.

Well done to all students who participated and a special thanks to Mrs Krysty Liebich for volunteering as a parent helper during the event. I hope that next year Waikerie High School can see a larger contingent of students attend this wonderful event.

NATIONALLY CONSISTENT COLLECTION OF DATA ON SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY

IN 2016

It is an annual requirement for all schools to participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD).

The NCCD will involve the collection of the following information:

the number of students receiving adjustments

to enable them to participate in education on

the same basis as other students;

the level of adjustment provided to students;

and

where known, the student’s type of disability.

Key processes are in place at Waikerie High School to collect accurate data, part of which involves consultation with parents and carers in the course of determining and providing reasonable adjustments. Please read the Frequently Asked Questions page attached to this newsletter, and contact Rebecca Smitran (Special Education Coordinator) if you have any questions or concerns.

SPORTS NEWS

Adelaide Athletics 13th April Waikerie High School recently competed in the Secondary School Sport of South Australia’s (SSSSA) B2 Grade Track & Field Championships held at SANTOS Stadium. The school provided 52 students who filled 108 events over the day against much larger schools such as Kadina (550), Scotch College (1000), Heathfield (900), Nuriootpa (900) and St. Johns Grammar (800). The only school smaller was Kingston Area School with around 200 secondary enrolments. In the boys, Waikerie High School beat them all and combined only Heathfield and St. John’s prevailed. A lot of credit must go to students who participate in the Adelaide event. The bus leaves at 6am in the morning and does not return until 6pm in the afternoon. It is a long day but we are finding more students will travel for one event because they know how important their involvement is for the overall success of the team.

Congratulations to the following students who were able to place in their events and in particular, Zeus Camilleri-Baker for reaching the state standard in U16 Boys Javelin with a throw of 40.66m.

School Cross Country – Tuesday 17th May (Week 3) Students in HPE and PE classes have been training for the upcoming cross country run. The run will be based at the Waikerie Football Oval and students will run a course through the nearby mudflats. All students are expected to compete; they may walk some sections of the course if needed. Our focus is on both participation for all and competition for those wanting to earn points for their house. I thank the Waikerie Football Club in advance for the use of their facilities.

OPEN BOYS FOOTBALL

The new look Waikerie High School ‘Rainmothes’ go down in Open Boys Football

In extremely trying conditions down at the Waikerie Football Oval, the Waikerie High School Open Boys Football team gallantly went down against a much more experienced Glossop High School 9 goals 6 to 3 goals 5. Wearing the schools brand new Guernseys, Waikerie battled hard right until the end, even outscoring Glossop in the second half. Led strongly by on-field leaders Josh Liebich and Taran Brock, other better plays were Ben Smith, Ryan Shaw, and Blake Schober. Goal kickers for Waikerie were Blake Schober with 2, and Jasman Singh with 1.

The school’s football focus next turns to the 9 a-side Football Carnival held here in Waikerie later on this term for Year 8 and 9 boys and girls.

HOMESTAY FAMILIES FOR HACHIOJI JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Dear Parents/Guardians, Once again we are welcoming a group of students from Hachioji Junior High School in Tokyo to spend 10 days with our school community. From Saturday 30th July to Tuesday 9th August 2016 students will be visiting Waikerie and attending our High School. We are seeking families to host one of these students. Your role would be to involve these exchange students in your family life and to give them a taste of an Aussie lifestyle. The exchange student would attend school with your child and together they would be involved in a range of fun and educational activities. Last year both our own students and their Japanese friends were involved in conversational English classes, visiting a local farm, enjoying a boat cruise and attending an over-night camp. In 2016 the planned activities will be very similar to this. Students from Japan are both young men and women about 14 years of age who have some English language skills and as with all young people are interested in a wide variety of sports, hobbies and activities. Please consider supporting this exciting opportunity by filling in and returning the attached slip by Friday 27th May, whether you are interested in hosting a student or simply in obtaining further information. Yours sincerely Gill Collins Rob McLaren Coordinator Student Exchange Principal Waikerie High School Waikerie High School Ph: 85412533 10 May 2016 ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
