Joanna Barton is Manager of the Outback Eye Service which is based in the Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick.

After the death of the late Fred Hollows, his colleague Professor Minas Coroneo at the Prince of Wales Hospital took over Fred’s vision to go out and deliver the best Eye Care to people living in remote communities in Western NSW.

Whilst in Bourke, the Professor met Joanna Barton who was working at Bourke District Hospital as a diabetes educator, and asked her to join him at the Outback Eye Service here at the Prince of Wales Hospital.

This unique service, borne out of his passion and vision, and Joanna’s unique “can do” attitude, provides a prime example of how other medical disciplines can provide essential outreach services in local communities.

The Outback Eye Service covers western NSW, working out of hospitals in Bourke, Walgett, Lightning Ridge, Brewarrina, Cobar, Wilcannia, Menindee and working closely with Broken Hill Hospital.

Page 2: PRINCE OF WALES HOSPITAL FOUNDATION AUTUMN ......AUTUMN EDITION Meet Kitty & Barry Kitty’s husband passed away in 2008 aged 83. He had been treated at the Prince of Wales Hospital

Mary has a full-time job in the local

Women’s Refuge, where she has worked

for 13 years, and is an important part of

her local community.

Her world was recently turned upside

down. “One morning I woke up, and

everything I saw in my left eye was tinged

in red,” Mary told us. “There were rivers

of red water flowing on the back lawn,

and the windows and mirrors in my

house had turned red.”

Mary’s eye was sore, but because it

looked okay she did not think there was

anything seriously wrong.

What she didn’t realize was that her eye

was bleeding from behind.

Because the pain continued Mary spoke

with her good friend Maxine McCosker,

who works as an Eye Co-ordinator with

the Outback Eye Service. Knowing that

Mary’s situation could be serious, Maxine

arranged an emergency appointment for

Mary.

When Mary met with Joanna and one of

the Clinic doctors later that same day, she learned that she had a detached retina and would require specialist lazer surgery.

Two weeks later Mary was in the Prince of Wales Hospital undergoing life-changing surgery, which restored the sight in her left eye.

But the story doesn’t end there. A couple of weeks later she started losing vision in her right eye too.

Mary said, “I had completely different symptoms this time. I had no pain, there were no shades of red, I just couldn’t see.”

Mary saw the Outback Eye Service on their next visit to Bourke, and was told she would need urgent cataract surgery if she was to have any chance of keeping the vision in her right eye.

When we spoke to Mary recently she said, “I am ever so grateful to Joanna and the team at the Outback Eye Service. Without them, I wouldn’t be able to see today. And I am proud to be an advocate for aboriginal women. We must take our health seriously, and when something goes wrong, we must do something about it.”

This is a wonderful story, and one the Outback Eye Service sees repeated time and time again following their eye clinics in western New South Wales.

Thank You! You gave the Gift of Song...Please replace with “We can’t thank you enough for your generosity which allowed us to purchase the much needed $55,000 NIM Monitor.”

You may remember Sarah’s story, and we’re happy to tell you that many other patients have benefitted from this vital piece of equipment, which is used in surgery to the head and neck.

Our surgeons have yearned for this piece of equipment for years. And now it’s in their hands because of your generous efforts.

You are helping us to save lives, and making the lives we save easier to live. Thank you. We couldn’t do it without you.

An impression of the new Cancer Centre, what it will look like once it is completed

The Nelune Comprehensive Cancer Centre will be a centre of excellence for cancer services. Our patients will not only be in peaceful and modern surroundings but with state of the art equipment.

We understand that hearing the words “you have cancer” is so often a great shock and the whole world looks different from then on. What was thought about yesterday no longer seems to have relevance for how to feel and act today.

It takes time to muster up the mental and sometimes physical energy to face the ongoing treatments of radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery.

Family support is paramount as is the support of each staff member of the cancer journey team.

The oncologist, the surgeon, the radiation technicians, the social workers, the physiotherapists, the nurses, and the admin staff all become so important and integral in cancer patient’s lives.

This is why the Nelune Comprehensive Cancer Centre is so important to us here at the Prince of Wales Hospital.

Every year we treat over 3000 new patients from Prince of Wales Hospital, Royal Hospital for Woman, Sydney Children’s Hospital and many patients are referred from throughout NSW.

We ask you to help us to give the best care possible to our patients …. you ……. your family …….your friends.

Please make your donation to the Nelune Comprehensive Cancer Centre either online at www.powhf.org.au, on one

of our donation forms, or by calling our Supporter Care Team on 02 9382 4263

Thank you

THE ZIPPER CLUBYour support helps patients like Tony and Rick

On Sunday 25th November 2012, Tony Armstrong and Rick Oakley made the journey down from Coffs Harbour to the Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick, Sydney. The next day both underwent triple bypass surgery and became members of “The Zipper Club”, a very select group of people who have had open heart surgery and

now bear a scar in the shape of a zip on their chest!

Having returned home just 10 days after surgery, Tony and Rick are now doing well recovering at home with their families. Rick and Tony have stayed in contact, and have been supporting each other throughout their recovery.

When I called Tony a few days ago, he was out and about, driving in his car. When I mentioned this to Rick, he said that not being able to drive for the first six weeks had been a double-edged sword.

“At first I felt a bit isolated, but then I realised that the 15 minute walk into town was actually pretty good exercise for me! It forced me to do something!”

Coronary heart disease is more common than we think. In Australia it now affects more than 3.6million people, and is considered one of the country’s biggest killers.

At the Prince of Wales Hospital Tony

and Rick benefitted from the modern and best practice cardiac technology offered by the cardio-thoracic unit,

and the care of our highly skilled staff, which is available to patients from throughout NSW.

If you are one of our Zipper Club members, and would like to make a donation, you can do so either online at www.powhf.org.au, on one of our donation forms, or by calling our Supporter Care Team on 02 9382 4263

AUTUMN 2013 EDITION

Meet Kitty & Barry

Kitty’s husband passed away in 2008 aged 83. He had been treated at the Prince of Wales Hospital for emphysema for many years.

Kitty has a pacemaker and recently underwent minor heart surgery. Her son Barry, who is 54, suffers from many chronic illnesses, one of which is Crohn’s

Disease, which caused him to have emergency surgery in 2010. Kitty and Barry spend a lot of time at the Prince of Wales Hospital seeing their specialists.

Every time they visit, Kitty and Barry pop in to visit us in the Foundation office, where Kitty trades books in our Gold Coin Library. She’s an avid reader, and her favourite books are romance novels.

“It is always a joy to see Barry and Kitty’s smiling faces,” says Leanne Zalapa, CEO of the POWH Foundation. “They are so happy and appreciative to know that there are great people out there supporting the foundation, and making a real difference patients like them at the Prince of Wales Hospital.”

“We love Barry and Kitty’s visits,” she continued. “Kitty has a wicked sense of humour and always leaves with a wink and her favourite catch phrase “If you can’t be good be careful!”

Kitty and Barry, what a pair!

Too late to say Thank You

Gwendoline Bailey was a wonderful donor and supporter of the Prince of Wales Hospital Foundation. We knew her as a patient at the hospital, but we had no idea what a talented painter she was, or that when she arrived from New Zealand that she reinvented herself, and called herself “Toni”!

Toni was known to many people in the Randwick area, and when she passed away recently she left a bequest to further the work of the Prince of Wales Hospital Foundation, and to promote a cause she believed is so important. It was a surprise to us… we had no idea she had written the POWH Foundation into her Will. We could not discuss with her what she wanted us to do with the money… we could not recognise her whilst she was alive.

The saddest thing for us was that it was too late to say “Thank You”.

If, like Toni, you have done that for the Prince of Wales Hospital Foundation… please… let us know. We would like to be able to discuss with you how you would like us to use your gift and… most importantly… we want to say “Thank You”.

Toni, with her square dancing partner

We would love to invite you to join our patron, Emeritus Professor John Dwyer, and become a member of the Nightingale Bequest Society.

If you are thinking about putting your affairs in order, and would like to find out about making a bequest, like Toni, please call Jakki Travers on (02) 9382 4291. Jakki will be pleased to give you all the information you need.

GRATEFUL PATIENTPRINCE OF WALES HOSPITAL FOUNDATION

Thank you to all our loyal supporters. We can’t thank you enough. You make such a difference to so many patients. Patients just like Mary, Tony and Rick, Kitty and Barry. Thank you!”

We are proud to announce a wonderful fundraising event for you to be involved with. MJ’s Coffee4Cancer Day will be held on Friday 14 June, and promises to be a day to remember!

This event will raise vital funds for adolescent and young adult patients with life-threatening illnesses at the Nelune Comprehensive Cancer Centre in the Prince of Wales Hospital (POWH). We also want to raise awareness of their very specific needs.

MJ, Mathew Julian, was a vibrant young man, who tragically lost his short battle with leukaemia, aged just 19.

MJ’s family found that there was nowhere for MJ to escape to from the clinical environment.

So passionate are they about creating an oasis within the Hospital, that they have teamed up with the Prince of Wales Hospital Foundation,to launch MJ’s Coffee4Cancer Day.

MJ’s Coffee4Cancer will raise vital funds for adolescent rooms in the Nelune Comprehensive Cancer Centre. Rooms where patients, like MJ, can spend time with their friends, play video games, chat online and just be able to act their age. A place where their illness is secondary.

On MJ’s Coffee4Cancer Day, we hope that every coffee sold in at least 1,000 Coffee Shops throughout Sydney will help to raise funds for Adolescent Cancer Rooms at the Hospital.

Through donations from every coffee sold, you will be making a difference to the lives of young people, just like MJ.

Get involved on June 14. Buy your coffee from a coffee shop supporting MJ’s

Coffee4Cancer Day. Help us reach our goal to build these new adolescent and young adult patient rooms.

New coffee shops are signing up every week. If you are a coffee shop owner or manager and want to help our patients, please contact our Events Team on 02 9382 4266

LOCAL ARTISTS EXHIBIT AT POWHHuge numbers view paintings. It’s almost unthinkable. More than 1,000,000 patients, visitors, doctors, nurses and staff each year see the paintings hanging in what we call our ‘art space’.

It may only be a corridor leading from the High Street Entrance of the hospital, but to us it’s our “art space”, where we showcase the works of local, eastern-suburbs artists.

They’recolourfulandvibrantandwe’reproudtodisplaythem–as are the artists who created them.

Our art space gives these local artists a chance to exhibit their works; it is our way of supporting them as well as supporting patient care at the hospital. For every artwork sold, 20 per cent goes to your Foundation.

If you are interested in transforming the internal space of the hospital and exhibiting your work, or wanting to donate an artwork permanently to the hospital, please contact Carina Johnson on (02)9382 4263 or via email [email protected].

DREAMS TO LIVE FORPRINCE OF WALES HOSPITAL FOUNDATION

e Prince of Wales Hospital Foundation

A culinary dream comes trueJohn felt so good he wants to do it all again in 10 years

Making dreams come true!

The Dreams2live4 program fulfils our dreamer’s lifelong wishes. It becomes a period of time where they can completely take their mind of their illness, where they can cherish the memories of being together with family or friends, and create new memories that will last forever.

It was a lunch never to forget!

Cured ocean trout garnished with horseradish cream was the beginning of John Kepski’s special lunch. Followed by a slow-roasted shoulder of stuffed lamb

John is 67 and has progressed prostate cancer.

ForJohn’sdream, hewantedTVchef,Maggie Beer to cook him lunch with a group of his closest friends. Maggie agreed instantly.

In the house of one of John’s friends, Maggie prepared an exquisite four-course menu.

John and a select group of his loved ones relished the ocean trout and lamb. They

finished with ‘coffee vino cotto with vanilla bean ice cream’.

Lunch prompted a second dream

John shared with his loved ones, “My next dream, would be for all of us to gather in another 10 years and do it all again.”

Our Dreams2live4 program fulfils the dreams of our patients with life threatening cancer. Our hope is that every time a dream is fulfilled, the massive weight of intractable illness is lifted, if even for a short while. More importantly, a memory is engraved on the hearts and in the minds of patients, family members and friends that will last forever.
