On Tuesday, May 1, labor activists and immigrant

support organizations staged rallies in New York City to commemorate May Day.

The internationally recognized date commemorates the 1886 Haymarket Square riot in Chicago, when laborers gathered to demand an eight-hour workday and better workplace conditions. May Day is a national holiday in some countries, but not the United States.

In Washington Square, labor unions and immigrant rights groups staged a press conference and rally in front of the famous arch to show solidarity. Groups in attendance included the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC), 32BJ SEIU, 1199SEIU, DC37, LiUNA Locals 78 and 79, New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA), Make the Road New York (MRNY) and Teamsters Joint Council 16.

Others in attendance included Public Advocate Letitia James, New York Lt.

Governor Kathy Hochul and the Mayor’s Offi ce of Immigrant Affairs Acting Commissioner Bitta Mostofi .

Speakers drew attention to how Trump administration policies have negatively impacted immigrants, such as the move to cancel Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for refugees from several countries, and the attempt to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Making history is a common event for David Alexander

Paterson.

When he succeeded Eliot Spitzer and was sworn in 2008, Paterson became the nation’s first blind governor and only the third African-American to lead a U.S. state.

Before ascending to New York State’s top post, Paterson served as State Senator representing Northern Manhattan, home to one of the country’s largest Dominican populations.

Over 650,000 Dominicans reside in New York City, according to the 2010 U.S. Census.

In the years since his days in elected office, the connections between the Harlem native and the Dominican community have deepened.

This past April, the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) even recognized Paterson as an honorary professor of its Faculty of Legal and Political Sciences. In his remarks during the ceremony, UASD Rector Iván Grullón said Paterson had proven an effective steward of the common good

de la Casa Blanca -incluida la disculpa de la presidenta Margaret Talev- deberían sonar como una ola de indignación hueca a los montones de

mujeres difamadas por Donald Trump.Despreciadas por sus apariencias,

ridiculizadas por su inteligencia o servidas como poco más que platos para llamar la atención, las mujeres –amigas y enemigas por igual- son molienda.

Como magnate de la ciudad, Donald Trump alegremente refl exionó en voz alta sobre los atributos de las mujeres, incluida su hija. “En realidad, ella siempre ha sido muy voluptuosa”, dijo Trump a su amigo Howard Stern en su programa de radio en 2006. “Si Ivanka no fuera mi hija, tal vez estaría saliendo con ella”, ofreció el mismo año en televisión nacional.

Por tal motivo, lo merecido para las mujeres en desacuerdo con Trump es encontrarse apalancadas como objetivos, incluso cuando son daños colaterales, y comprender que están disponibles pa’quien las quiera.

Aunque tildaba de mentiroso al candidato principal, el senador Ted Cruz, fue a su esposa, Heidi Cruz, a la que Trump obsequió su característica degradación: retuiteando un meme que generaba comparaciones poco halagadoras entre ella y su propia esposa, la ex modelo Melania Trump. “Una imagen vale más que mil palabras”, fue la frase adjunta a la foto que dividía la pantalla y yuxtaponía a Heidi haciendo una mueca y a Melania beatífi ca.

The howls of criticism following comedian Michelle Wolf’s remarks at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner – including the apology from president Margaret Talev – should ring as gales of hollow indignation to the scores of women maligned by Donald Trump.

Disparaged for their appearances, ridiculed for their intelligence or served up as little more than platters for the grabbing, women – friend and foe alike – are grist.

As a mogul about town, Donald Trump gleefully mused aloud about the attributes of women, including his daughter. “She’s actually always been very voluptuous,” observed Trump to pal Howard Stern on the radio in 2006. “If Ivanka weren’t my daughter, perhaps I’d be dating her,” he offered the same year on national television.

For years, he stoked his feud with Rosie O’Donnell – with whom he differed on issues ranging from the Miss America pageant to the Iraq war – in terms keenly familiar to those on school yard frontlines. “I look forward to taking lots of money from my nice fat little Rosie,” he remarked when threatening to sue.

As a candidate vying for the electorate’s attention and trust, Donald Trump drew frequently from the mean-girl well. He debased his primary opponent Carly Fiorina – the only woman in the crowded Republican fi eld – as too unattractive for the highest offi ce (“Would anyone vote for that? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president?!” he crowed in Rolling Stone).

While the men in his sights have been knocked for a number of sins – mendacity, stupidity, even thirst – none have had their blood fl ow probed. That he reserved

for debate moderator Megyn Kelly when criticizing her aggressive questioning. “You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever,” he said afterwards on CNN. “In my opinion, she was off base.”

On such grounds, the comeuppance for women at odds with Trump is to fi nd themselves leveraged as targets – even when collateral damage – and to understand they are, well, up for grabs.

Though he branded primary candidate Senator Ted Cruz a liar, it was his wife Heidi Cruz on whom Trump visited his signature degradation – re-tweeting a meme that drew unfl attering comparisons between her and his own wife, former model Melania Trump. “A picture is worth a thousand words” was the appended quote beside the split-screen photo that juxtaposed a grimacing Heidi and a beatifi c Melania.

There are many more such moments that illustrate clearly how a woman’s face and body constitute fair game in Trump’s public discourse, be it on shock jock radio, tabloid pages, debate stages or Twitter.

A few historical examples: see aforementioned bromance with Howard Stern; see “locker room talk” with Billy Bush; see weigh-ins with pageant contestant Alicia Machado; see gloating confi rmations of adultery; see alleged trysts with adult fi lm stars; see thoughts on Irish female journalists in the Oval Offi ce.

In turn, the material offered on Saturday by Wolf was, as intended, raw and discomfi ting. Between the profanity and wincing barbs on abortion, Pruitt porn and Southwest Airlines, the former Daily Show contributor lobbed

“A place where I could succeed”Finding balance at Berkeley

Samantha Chase is already a working professional.

But that hasn’t stopped her from focusing on her future career.

The Bronx resident is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Legal Studies at Berkeley College, and will apply to law schools later this year, with a plan to make an impact in the environmental arena.

Chase received an Associate in Applied Science in Legal Studies from Berkeley College in 2015, and did not initially plan to return to school.

Following graduation she spent time working with LowerNine.org, a post-Katrina rebuilding effort in New Orleans. When she returned to New York City, she enrolled at different colleges to pursue a Bachelor’s degree, with mixed results.

“I found that I was in such a different place emotionally, and older than all the other students there,” she said. “And I felt constrained by not being able to work.”

In 2014, Chase was hired as a Leasing Agent with Milford Management, and the following year was promoted to Information Systems Analyst for the Human Resources department of Emigrant Bank, an affiliate of Milford. She only thought about college again when she re-discovered Berkeley College across the street from her office.

“The night program, the timing – everything about it was perfect for an adult professional who was looking for a companion in education rather than a traditionally constrained collegiate

atmosphere,” explained Chase. “It was a place where I could succeed, and a place where I

was able to finish the degree I was working toward.”

The decision to pursue law was natural – her father is an attorney.

“Attorneys have the ability to be in the room where decisions

are made and legislation is written,” she said. “Now, more than ever, we need

people who are willing to put everything into fighting for our collective freedom and future.”

Balancing her classes with a degree has not been easy – she does homework on

her lunch break and studied for her LSATs during her commute – but she consistently makes the President’s List and Dean’s List.

Her Berkeley College professors say they see her commitment.

“Samantha wants to help the community

and those less fortunate,” said Moya Bansile, JD, Legal Studies, Berkeley College School of Professional Studies. “I love her energy, sincerity, passion and honesty.”

“I hope to save the planet in my small way,” says Berkeley College student Samantha Chase.

When two people marry, it is an exquisitely personal decision

and a fabulously shared reality - shared with extended family and friends who ultimately represent the community who are nourished by the love of the bride and groom and who embrace them through good times and bad. Below is a look at our common language of love.

1. Something old. Marriage is one of the most ancient institutions in human civilization. Although the particular details vary by culture, and expectations have evolved over time, marriage has always been about ties that bind. From the historical strategic alliances between families to the relatively new idea of a love marriage, the common denominator is that marriage is a personal-public commitment that serves as the foundational bedrock that stewards society from one generation to the next.

2. Something new. With over 107 billion people who have ever lived on earth, we can fi gure there have been literally billions of marriages in one form or another. Nonetheless, there is something new with each “I do.” It is the fi rst time that this couple marries, and their union offers optimism for an unfolding future. It offers potential for a unique mix of genes that will carry their dreams into a future they will never see. 3. Something borrowed. No matter how prepared we are as we

approach our wedding day, each of us is incomplete. As spouses,

we help complete each other, but even still, a marriage in a vacuum lacks the oxygen it needs to grow. We borrow lessons learned from our elders, we

New Yorkers of color are being

targeted over whites for marijuana arrests, according to a police reform advocacy group.

Citing statistics from the state’s division of Criminal Justice Services, the Police Reform Organizing Project (PROP) said that 93 percent of marijuana possession arrests in the first three months of the year involved blacks and Hispanics.

“These stats reflect an undeniable reality. People of color are being unfairly targeted by police when it comes to these arrests,” said PROP Director Robert Gangi. “No matter how much [Mayor Bill] de Blasio wants to spin it that the police target behavior and not people of color, this data indicates racist and discriminatory practices by the NYPD.”

Arrests for pot possession were the third most common type of offense in the first three months of the year. The NYPD made nearly 4,100 such arrests from January to March of 2018.

Gangi said that people of color are being singled out for marijuana collars, despite research showing that white people use and sell the drug in equal or greater proportions than African American and Latinos.

“There have been studies done in that regard,” he said. “It’s not like people of color are the ones using all the marijuana.”

Arrest data indicates a years-long trend of the NYPD targeting people of color for minor infractions, PROP said. So far in

2018, 87.5 percent of misdemeanor arrests have involved people of color, compared to 86.5 percent in the first three months of 2017 and 2016.

However, one minor infraction arrest category -- subway fare evasion -- has seen a significant drop. Data shows that fare evasion arrests are down 52 percent in the first three months of this year, compared to the same period for 2017.

“We believe that’s a function of a change in policy and practice at the NYPD,” said Gangi. “Clearly, the police have made a concerted effort to lighten up on fare-beating arrests. There’s no reason they can’t do the same for marijuana arrests.”

PROP has estimated that one misdemeanor arrest costs the city $1,750, which means the city is spending upwards of $707,000 per day

to process the arrests, Gangi said.He suggested that the NYPD’s

crackdown on marijuana offenses began during the Bloomberg administration, under Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

“I think that Kelly believed smoking marijuana is wrong, and that thinking hasn’t evolved in the most recent leadership of the NYPD,” Gangi remarked. “They want to keep their foot on the pedal.”

In response, the NYPD said the arrests PROP analyzed occurred in response to specific complaints about public pot smoking.

“The report fails to acknowledge that a tremendous number of quality of life enforcement is in response to specific and repeated complaints from members of the public, often in high crime neighborhoods,” said Lt. John Grimpel, an NYPD spokesman, in an email. “Quality of life policing has proven itself as an effective, law enforcement model throughout the U.S over the last 20+ years which has resulted in making New York City the safest big city in America.”

However, Gangi questioned that explanation, citing complaint data indicating that of the five neighborhoods with the most arrests in 2016, only one ranked in the top five for calls about marijuana.

“It’s funny that the NYPD would doubt our findings, because we’re literally reporting their own numbers,” said Gangi.

He called on high-profile individuals such as Public Advocate Letitia James and gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon, who have both publicly supported legalization of marijuana, to focus on convincing Mayor de Blasio to direct the NYPD to effectively halt arrests for recreational use of the drug.

“They’ve said they support legalization, but that’s not taking a political risk,” Gangi said. “Taking a risk would be if they put pressure on de Blasio to decriminalize marijuana.”

on whether it will extend TPS for around 57,000 Hondurans. She said she expects the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to end TPS for Honduras the way it already has for immigrants from Haiti, Nepal and Nicaragua.

“I feel offended by that position of the government, because I have paid my taxes, I am not a criminal, I did not come here to steal anything from anyone, I am not a terrorist, and it hurts me a lot to see that this government seems to have no heart and not see all that we have contributed to this country,” Canales said. “If they cancel it, I will not leave. I will continue fi ghting for my dignity.”

Founded in 1982, the annual celebration is held on Sixth Avenue and draws tens of thousands.

The parade has traditionally been celebrated on the second Sunday of August, to mark the 1863 independence war, known as “La Guerra de la Restauración,” in which freedom from Spain was won.

In addition to Paterson, the new board members are Diana Reyna, former City Councilmember and Brooklyn Deputy Borough President; Annie Mínguez, Director of Government and Community Relations at Good Shepherd Services; and Xiomara Wallace, Assistant Director of Community Intergovernmental Affairs at the NYC Health + Hospitals in King County.

“As the first Dominican-American woman elected to hold public office in New York State, I am truly delighted to join the Board of Directors,” said Reyna. “I applaud the legacy of past and present board members’ extraordinary contributions and I look forward to building together on the parade’s great work.”

DDP leaders explained the new members reflected the organization’s mission of collaboration and highlighted its year-round robust programming, which includes strategic alliances with cultural and social service groups across the city.

“It’s important to be a board that’s

inclusive, that reflects the diversity seen around the city,” said María Lizardo, DDP spokesperson and the Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation (NMIC) Executive Director. “We know we can’t do this on our own. We need partners.”

The parade’s theme this year is “Our Youth, Our Future.”

“[This is] about how we can better young people,” said Mínguez, who has been active since 2015 as part of DDP’s Community Advisory Committee. “Without our young people, without cultivating them

and helping them to become our future leaders, we would not be where we are today.”

In the past three years, DDP has presented over 80 students with scholarships, a number that has increased steadily year to year.

“Last year, [the DDP] was able to double the scholarship recipients,” observed Mínguez. “We know that the dollars are going directly to young people.”

Also at the conference, scholarship recipient and Lafayette College sophomore Fraynette Familia was unveiled as winner of the DDP’s Social Media Contest, in which the scholars

competed by promoting their experiences as scholarship recipients. Hundreds of Tweets and Instagram likes earned Familia a roundtrip, non-stop ticket to any destination serviced by parade sponsor JetBlue.

“The scholarship was a blessing for me, and the support I received has been more than I could have imagined. I am honored to be a part of this new family,” enthused Familia, who is Director of Equity and Inclusion in Lafayette’s student government and the Hispanic Society’s Co-President. “I felt like I joined a network of people like me who wanted to see me thrive.”

Familia also expressed gratitude for DDP’s role in “maintaining visibility.”

“[In the] diaspora, people can feel like they left their roots behind,” she explained. “I love going to the parade every year because it makes me proud to see that people are still in touch with those very roots. That they never

left them, that they brought them here with them.”

The group also shared details of events that will be held throughout the city in the weeks leading up to the parade.

Khury, who promised an “even more amazing parade this year,” said the newest members had already hit the ground running.

“Their diversity, and public and private experience, will serve our organization well,” she beamed. “This is going to

be fun.”

clawed at.There is room to debate whether this dinner

requires different norms of civility and comity, how any of it refl ects as a celebration of the First Amendment, and whether the presence of a professional comedian as sardonic foil makes sense during an administration wrung from reality TV- or even after.

But what is clear is that for years we have been wending our way together to the moment upon which Wolf settled in at her podium and riffed on orgasms and Jake Tapper; Ivanka and tampons; and Sarah Huckabee Sanders and The Handmaid’s Tale.

For years, we’d shake our heads, even our fi sts, when word broke of yet another indignity loosed from the “Campaign Trail Treats.” We gnashed our teeth at having to explain vile words during carpool. We worried about what our daughters were hearing, what they were thinking.

We pined for an imaginary “before,” longed for “what ifs.”

But the sting would ebb, and then we’d move.Farther through the rabbit hole, deeper down

into the sunken place of accommodation.How readily we’d forgotten the father touting

his 24-year-old daughter’s sex appeal in 2006, the showman who taunted women for decades as “fat pigs, dogs, slobs and disgusting animals.”

Now – pussy this, shithole that.Where we once were stirred up, we are

now inured to the foul spirit and sharp edges embedded in the dialogue.

We’ve had practice.For years, we’ve been colluding as consumers,

quaffi ng big swigs of the stuff dispensed by

the same media platforms that spouted artful outrage this week.

That Wolf also mentioned Sanders’ ‘smoky’ make-up has prompted many to accuse ‎her of going one gendered barb too far.

Vulgar, polarizing, unfair- Wolf certainly offered much material from which to mine umbrage.

But we’re well past feigning surprise at the coarsened speech in the square.

We’ve long shed the pretense, however tenuous, that vulgarity is disallowed and that women’s looks and bodies, even for those in the White House, are off the agenda.

Reconfi guring the public dialogue to openly allow gender-specifi c attack lines on attractiveness, weight, and even makeup (again) were presaged years ago by the man who knew we’d be here for it – and the very man whom Press Secretary Sanders, smoky-eyed or not, represents every day at her own podium.

Just ask Heidi.

Esa Wolf también mencionó que el maquillaje “ahumado” de la secretaria de prensa de la Casa Blanca, Sanders, ha llevado a muchos a acusarla de ir demasiado lejos.

Vulgar, polarizada, injusta... Sin duda, Wolf ofreció mucho material del cual extraer resentimiento.

Pero ya hemos dejado de fi ngir sorpresa ante el discurso vulgar de la plaza. Hace mucho tiempo que perdimos la simulación, aunque poco convincente, de que la vulgaridad no está permitida y de que la apariencia y el cuerpo de las mujeres, incluso las de la Casa Blanca, están fuera de la agenda.

Reconfi gurar el diálogo público para permitir abiertamente líneas de ataque específi cas de género sobre el atractivo, el peso e incluso el maquillaje (otra vez) fueron presagiadas hace años por el hombre que sabía que estaríamos aquí para ello, y el mismo hombre que la secretaria de Prensa Sanders, con ojos ahumados o no, representa todos los días en su propio podio.

En 2014 Chase fue contratada como agente de arrendamiento por Milford Management, y al año siguiente fue promovida a analista de sistemas de información en el departamento de recursos humanos de Emigrant Bank, una filial de Milford. Ella solo pensó en la universidad de nuevo cuando re-descubrió Berkeley College al otro lado de la calle de su oficina.
