Here I am, taking a few steps back and observing the ongoing forward march

of technology. Even in my own little world that touches a nano-fraction of today’s technological wonders, I am awed, amazed and sometimes frustrated. The two pieces of technology that I probably use the most on a daily basis, the computer and the telephone, are enough to set my head spinning. I remember back to when, as a little kid, we told the telephone operator what number we wanted...at first it was a word followed by the numbers. And oh yeah...first we had a party line (shared with other phone customers)...and then a private line. Yikes! Then the dial phone, all digit phone numbers, area codes, the break-up of Ma Bell, cordless phones, radio phones, car phones, cell phones (loved the bag phone and the brick) and now smart phones that will handle virtually any computing, entertainment or daily task you can throw at it. Computers are no less amazing. From the first U.S. made commercial computer, the Univac, back in the early 50’s, which took up entire rooms with hardware and operator consoles, to today’s Windows and Mac marvels, the advancements are blinding. Personally, I love to keep up with the latest and greatest, and for a while, I furiously jumped from computer to computer, cell phone to smartphone to iPhone and Blackberry. But a few years ago, I settled into a comfort zone with my Mac and Blackberry.

I subscribe to several computer and photo magazines and absorb all the tech news and information I can. And now I’m slightly frustrated...irritated actually. It seems I cannot buy the latest software for my Mac without compromising it’s overall performance. It’s processor might be too slow, it needs more memory (so do I for that matter) and quite frankly, it’s “older” technology is starting to show. Same with my trusty Blackberry. It is a bit clunky to use, its web interface isn’t the greatest, the camera is mediocre, but it’s a great phone and its email function will never let you down. It goes all day and more on a single charge, and I’ve dropped it way too many times without it whimpering one bit. It has a real keyboard, fits in any pocket and is lightweight. But it too is starting to show its older, slower technology age. What do I do? Why am I so upset? I really don’t need anything newer or faster or with even more bells and whistles...I just want it! But I don’t want to have to learn stuff all over again, transfer everything and put up with all the glitches and problems that are inevitable when buying new pieces of technology. Yes, to me it’s very frustrating...it’s irritating...but alas, it’s fun! Can’t wait till that iPhone 5 comes out. But I refuse to stand in line with the rest of the geeks to be one of the first users! I think.

Back to School means so many different things to many of us. To me it means

my son has returned to college and my house is yet again, empty and I am missing him like crazy. But this year, it doesn’t mean that at all because he never came home for summer break. One thing back to school mean is I need to be careful in the mornings and afternoons as I drive through the school zones. I can also say it means the nights will soon begin to get shorter and the crisp feeling of fall will soon be in the air. How are we saying goodbye to summer when we just said hello. A close friend told me, time flies when you are a kid and when you get older. I guess that means I am older. Hmmmm, here I thought I was still a spring chicken. I guess I didn’t read that memo. If you are newly an empty nester and just sent your son or daughter off to college, you will find yourself walking around the house as if you just moved in and learning your way around. I am not quite sure when this ends since I still feel it and my son is entering his senior year in college. You may find yourself call out to your child but laugh when you realize they are gone. Gone! The funniest part is that this is the beginning of your life with your adult child. How do you

wrap your brain around that? I don’t think I ever will. When the visits become more and more infrequent is the time I realize they have began living their own lives. I ask my mom how she accepted the fact that I was grown and living my own life, she laughed and said ‘I haven’t and you are not grown’ Okay, mother! The sad part is she means it. I hope you had an enjoyable summer and whatever you did was safe and memorable. Getting back into a routine can be a bit grueling. A couple of tips to get over the summer blues, take a weekend getaway. There are so many places to go around Las Vegas and California that will not drain your wallet. Throw an end of summer party. One way to feel like summer is still upon us is to enjoy friends on a beautiful Las Vegas night. We have the beauty of an extended summer all the way through to Halloween. Take advantage of that. Lastly, wrap yourself up with a good book that takes you away. I am sure you have a list of things that you can share with me. Please let me know, I’d love to hear from you. [email protected]

I had the pleasure of attending the first night, of what will be a two-year run where he will alternate with Celine

Dion and Elton John. The Colosseum was packed with fans old and new. I have always been a fan and wasn’t sure if I was getting rock and roll Rod Stewart or Rod Stewart singing the standards (not that one is better than the other). I guess the show title, The Hits should have been my first clue. When he walked out and began singing such hits like, “Downtown Train”, “Forever Young”, “Infatuation”, “Some Guys Have All the Fun” to name a few, I knew I was in for a treat. I didn’t realize how many songs I knew. It was a sing-a-long for grownups. Rod managed to show he’s still fit at 66 kicking soccer

balls into the audience as he sang “Hot Legs”. After the curtain fell he came out for an encore which again, got the audience on their feet dancing and singing not wanting the show to end. Let me just tell you, I have been to a lot of concerts and have walked away feeling entertained at best but Rod Stewart left me wanting more. A show I will definitely see again. One word to describe this show….FABULOUS! Be sure to get your tickets soon because you will want to see him again and again.

Bringing crocheted or knitted pieces to the public is usually saved for arts and crafts fairs. For the West

Flamingo Yarn Storming Group, based out of the West Flamingo Active Adult Center, knitting and crocheting has become a mission of public art. Yarn storming is the art of creating small cozies to adorn urban landscape, cheering up otherwise bare, concrete environments with bright colors and patterns. The mission of the West Flamingo group is to improve the landscape one stitch at a time by creating temporary yarn creations to beautify the West Flamingo center and park. Railings, lamp and signposts, bike stands and tree trunks are the likely canvases, but automobiles, buses, motorcycles, bridges, statues and other large objects have been “stormed” in cities around the world. The West Flamingo Yarn Stormers’ first project is to cover various railings and signposts on the center’s grounds. The group hopes to work in conjunction with the Friends of Winchester Public Art Committee on a large temporary public art project to be installed for the 2012 International Yarn Storming Day on June 11, 2012. Any senior, ages 50 and older, can participate in the group, which holds sessions on Wednesday afternoons to knit and crochet squares and rectangles incorporated into various yarn storming projects. Unlike many yarn storming groups around the world, the West Flamingo group is for seniors only. However, the group is interested in partnering with other yarn stormers under the age of 50 to help install the works after they’ve been created. The group also is accepting donations of yarn to help it complete its goal. The West Flamingo Active Adult Center is located at 6255 W. Flamingo Road, near Jones Boulevard. Those interested in the Yarn Stormers group can call 455-7742. Other Clark County Parks and Recreation events also can be found on the website at www.ClarkCountyNV.gov/parks or on social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook by visiting http://tinyurl.com/4dfw8ea.

Clark County is a dynamic and innovative organization dedicated to providing top-quality service with integrity, respect and accountability. With jurisdiction over the world-famous Las Vegas Strip and covering an area the size of New Jersey, Clark is the nation’s 14th-largest county and provides extensive regional services to more than 2 million citizens and 40 million visitors a year. Included are the nation’s 8th-busiest airport, air quality compliance, social services and the state’s largest public hospital, University Medical Center. The county also provides municipal services that are traditionally provided by cities to almost 900,000 residents in the unincorporated area. Those include fire protection, roads and other public works, parks and recreation, and planning and development.

Dear Dr. Casey:I have been seeing floaters in my left eye for the last few days. Should I be worried? Nancy R.

Dear Nancy:“Floaters”, as they are commonly called, are very common. Many people experience seeing dots, or

circles or squiggly lines on one eye or the other. Typically, these spots will “float” across the vision and back again, moving left and right, or up and down. Floaters are caused when the vitreous cavity, the jelly inside the middle of the eye, develops small areas of debris and this debris casts shadows on the retina, the film on the back of the eye that forms the actual visual image. Generally, floaters are not very serious and will not cause vision loss. However, sometimes the floaters arise from what is called a Posterior Vitreous Detachment (PVD). This is when the capsule of the jelly collapses into the center of the jelly, and when it all mixes together, patients notice a significant increase in floaters. Flashes of light are often common, as the retina is stimulated as the jelly capsule separates from the retina. It is always a good idea see a board certified ophthalmologist and undergo a careful dilated eye exam if you are seeing a new onset of floaters. Though uncommon, a small percentage of patients will be found to have a retinal tear, and a quick, safe and painless laser procedure can prevent a retinal detachment and the major surgery and vision loss that can be associated with a retinal detachment.

Dear Dr. Casey:I am sick of bifocals, and my sister says her eye doctor has her seeing in “monovision”. What’s that?Suzette M., Las Vegas

Dear Suzette:Monovision refers to a treatment in which one eye is focused on distance and the other is focused for near. This can allow patients like you to see well up close and far away without glasses. Most commonly, monovision is done in contact lenses, however, it can be used a variety of other ways as well. For instance, patients that already see well far away, but have trouble at near can undergo NearVision CK,

a FDA approved, quick, easy in-office surgical procedure that relies on monovision principles to improve near vision so readers are no longer needed. LASIK or cataract patients may opt for monovision as part of their treatment as well, although presbyopia correcting intraocular lenses, such as the Crystalens, are usually preferred for cataract patients. Monovision does not work with eyeglasses, because eyeglasses either minify or magnify images. Since the lenses are of unequal power, a sort of double vision results. Also, though many people adapt well to monovision, others do not. There is only one way to know for sure, try it!

Food

What is your favorite type of pizza? No matter where you come from originally, your favorite pizza is

usually the one that you had for the first time as a child. The smell of the bubbling cheeses and toppings, the tastes of its scrumptious gooey, yet crispy texture, and the smile that is on your face again as you recall your childhood longings for this terrific taste treat. When we asked children of every ethnicity and cultural background in Las Vegas what is their favorite food, the majority of youngsters have simply yelled out, “PIZZA!” “We love pizza and pizza with pepperoni!” These words were spoken by a group of four to twelve year old children of multi-cultural backgrounds right here in the Las Vegas Valley. When most people, who have relocated to other parts of the country, or the world, return to their childhood home base, they want to hurry up and get to that pizzeria where they were introduced to this epicurean delight. Tony always wants to return to the original Ledo Pizza Restaurant in Adelphi, MD and Lucille wants to go back to either the famous L & B Spumoni Gardens and Pizzeria Restaurant or the original Patsy’s (located under the Brooklyn Bridge) in Brooklyn, NY. These were the places where our pizza pleasures were introduced to our senses of smell, taste, sight, sound and feelings of happiness in our tummies. The scent, the taste, the sight, and the anxious feeling of waiting for your pizza to be placed in front of you has always seemed an arduous long wait. Pizza – by any other name would taste and smell as sweet, but historically it belies the true origins of this amazing number one fast food in America and most of the rest of the world. The historical background of this

seemingly universal food goes way back in antiquity to the Neolithic age! Throughout the Mediterranean area, flatbreads were made and flavored according to the tastes of the region and the availability of the ingredients. Archaeologists have discovered that a flatbread was baked in Sardinia over 3,000 years ago! In fact, the tomato itself, which originated in Peru, and was brought back to Italy in the 16th century, was at first considered to be poisonous! The poor and undernourished peasants of the region began to eat the tomato to appease their hunger and it was then

discovered not only to be non-poisonous, but delicious and nutritious. The addition of the tomato to use in the topping was commonplace by the 18th century in Naples, and became a favorite treat for tourists, as well as the Italian people. In 1830, open-air stands, like those in an uncovered bazaar, began to flourish as well as in pizza bakeries. Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba in Napoli, Italy, was

the first, genuine pizza parlor in Italy. This Neapolitan pizzeria was immediately followed by the opening of Brandi’s (where former President Bill Clinton made a special visit to try their pizza), DiMatteo’s, Sorbillo’s, Trianon’s and Umberto’s (founded in 1916). When we were in Napoli last summer, we went to Brandi’s and tasted heaven. We also went off the coast to visit the Isle of Capri, and had a memorable experience at the Caffe Zodiaco in the port area. This was true indulgence – although Lucille remembers the salumerias and trattorias that sold and made fresh bufala mozzarella from her childhood, this was an important moment for both her and Tony – eating bufala mozzarella (which is considered the best of the best) in its original Italian homeland.

Food

True to this tradition, in the early part of the 20th century, when the great Italian immigration waves landed in downtown Brooklyn and Little Italy in Manhattan, bread bakeries also baked and sold pizza. The streets in Carroll Gardens in downtown Brooklyn, had these bakeries producing pizza to be sold by the slice or taken home for the family. Lombardo’s in NYC’s Little Italy, licensed in 1905, claimed to be the first pizzeria in the USA. An interesting debate is now in question – a photograph depicting Lombardi was taken with his employee, Antonio Totonno Pero, who had flour dust on his shoes, while the owner had shiny, clean shoes, thus creating the speculation that Totonno was the original baker of pizza in the US! Totonno’s (who then started his own pizzeria) became a Coney Island tradition from the day that it opened its doors in 1924, until the sad moment in the 1990’s when the establishment burnt down. You could only order whole pies from Totonno’s, and it was only opened on weekends in the later years. As a teenager, Lucille had her first Totonno pie and was totally turned into a Totonno’s regular. Rumor has it that people back in Brooklyn are still waiting for Totonno’s to be rebuilt. And true to its ancestry, it was not a glamorous or fancy restaurant – but the pizza was better than any gourmand could imagine. New Jersey quickly followed the trend and in Trenton, in 1910, Joe’s Tomato Pies began operation and then Papa’s Tomato Pies opened in 1912. In New Haven and West Haven, Connecticut, Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria Napoletana opened in 1925. Pepe’s nephew, Sal Consiglio, opened his own pizzeria, Sally’s Apizza, in 1938. Most of these original pizza parlors have been handed down into their respective families and are run by their descendants. Los Angeles started pizza places in 1939, with the D’Amore family’s pizzeria. Chicago-style deep-dish pizza (a variation of the Sicilian deep crusted baked variety) started in 1943 with the now chain franchised Pizzeria Uno, founded by Ric Riccardo and Ike Sewell. Veterans returning from World War II had some of their first pizza in Italy while they were occupying the country and tired of their K-rations. American troops,

including former President, and Five Star General, Dwight D. Eisenhower, returned to our shores looking for pizza to satisfy their newly acquired taste sensation. Prior to this, it was mainly Italian immigrants who sought out pizza, but now the average American citizen wanted it, too! Hot dogs, hamburgers, all have taken a back seat to the now number one requested savory food in the world – PIZZA!!!! Homemade pizza has also taken a place in the American kitchen, although most of us go to our local pizzerias. Lucille’s very first taste of pizza was at the home of her junior high school classmate in Brooklyn, when Robert Falanga’s mother, brought a huge series of Sicilian style pan pizzas into our class party. The smiles and the glowing eyes of the children back then were obvious –

just as they are today when parents treat their youngsters to a pizza dinner. Those

memories are from many years ago, but those images and sensations

still remain vibrant in Lucille’s memory. Today, pizza sales are dominated by franchises and chains and those privately

owned pizzerias that deliver pies hot and quickly to your homes. Still, most of us tend to have a local family owned pizzeria as their choice for dining on pizza.

Carmine Vento has created a pizza dynasty in

Las Vegas. Arriving with his young wife, Annie, in 1976,

he created Villa Pizza that grew into a Las Vegas tradition. He

believes in hard work, and producing a good product as the keys to his success.

Carmine feels that the “Las Vegas Pizza Expo is good for people wanting to start a pizza business.” He said that, “he had his start as a dishwasher at Pizza Town USA, in East Patterson, NJ, when he was 15.” “My father was a carpenter and my whole family liked to cook.” Carmine was born in Milazzo, Sicily, near Messina. At the age of nine and a half, he moved to Brooklyn, NY. When queried about the new less-expensive pizzas made by pizza chains or economically geared pizza parlors, Carmine said, “In a ten dollar pizza, the sauce is usually watered down.” This is true is most food servicing areas, if you want to lower the price of the product, you have to make the ingredients go further. Knowing that, you begin to realize

Liposculpture is the artful and permanent sculpting of body contours through the removal of fat deposits.

The procedure will leave you with smaller, shapely body contours that are more proportionate to the rest of your body. Most people have figured out by now that you can’t control the way that fat is deposited throughout your body. Poor genes and age can negate good intentions, hours of exercise and healthy eating habits.

“If your shape is not what you envision, then Liposculpture can permanently sculpt out the body of your dreams.” Liposculpture is considered by most experts to be the safest and most effective way to permanently change your shape. With the use of tiny instruments and local anesthesia, stubborn fat can easily be removed while you’re awake! The fat is gently removed and your new shape is artfully sculpted by our Liposculpture Specialist. In the past, the surgery required blood transfusions, general anesthesia, hospital stays, and long recoveries. Dr. Jeffrey Klein, a Dermatologist, is credited as the originator of the tumescent technique that “changed the game” and made liposuction what it is today. Now with the use of the tumescent technique, the procedure can be done under local anesthesia while the patient is awake. This eliminates all the serious potential complications of general anesthesia and decreases the blood loss to around a teaspoon. Since

“As a specialty facility, the only procedure we do is liposuction. This allows our staff to focus all of their efforts and attain the best possible results while offering excellent customer service. there is much less bleeding, there is no need for a hospital stay and the recovery is significantly less.Since it’s inception, liposuction performed with the use of the tumescent technique has had an excellent safety profile. Infection rates are almost non-existent, hospital stays are extremely rare, and the recovery allows for patients to go home the same day and get back to normal activities in as little as 1-3 days.

that a true, full-bodied pizza, or any food, needs pure and full flavored ingredients to make a superior product. Quantity does not always equate to quality! John Arena, Jr., of Metro Pizza, a name synonymous with great pizza in Las Vegas, came out here from Long Island, NY, with his cousin Sam Facchini in 1980 with encouragement from his father, John Arena, Sr. When they first came to Las Vegas, all they had were two pizza ovens, a cash register, a napkin holder and each other. They are a true great American success story! They are attributable to creating the International Pizza Exchange (1987), The World Pizza Championships (1990), The World Spinning Championships (1990), and the International Pizza Hall of Fame (1999). In 1986, they were bestowed with the honor of being named the National Pizza Operators of the year, and later, in 1996, they were named the Nevada Restaurateurs of the Year. John Jr. learned his craft in his family’s restaurant and had been making pizzas since he was a young boy. He takes great pride in his product and love of his life in making pizza. John Arena even offers pizza making classes in Las Vegas’ Metro Pizza for those who want to try their hands at home made pizza. Tommy Marcos’s Ledo Restaurant in Maryland, (Tony’s favorite in the whole world) has been making pizza since 1955 when he thought it “was going to be a passing trend” as he opened his Ledo Pizza and Restaurant in Adelphi, MD, not far from the University of Maryland. Over the years, Ledo’s became so famous in the mid-Atlantic region that many more Ledo Pizzerias opened over the years. Tommy Marco, Jr. said, “The proof is in the pie. It’s just good. People like it.” Tommy DeMarco received worldwide attention when he was asked to appear on the Oprah Winfrey show as one of America’s Best Pizza Restaurants. He received this distinction by the Harpo Production Company and admits, “the camera crews made him nervous.” Pizza – pizza – pizza – by any other name would smell and taste as deliciously decadent, yet nutritious and healthy. In our new wellness oriented world, pizza is an outstanding dish for everyone. Different regions of the world, and countries, even cities, bring their own stamp to the basic recipes and make newly created delicacies to the old-fashioned memories of the international community’s favorite food – PIZZA!! So, go ahead, be a little adventurous, try a new topping, a different ingredient and always remember your favorite – most likely, your first slice of pizza. Enjoy and to your health, satisfy your hunger, have a slice, please…Mangia, mangia, mangia!!!

The Hotel Zoso is oh! – So, wonderful! The Hotel Zoso in Palm Springs, CA is a total respite from civilization as we

perceive it. It is a quiet but delicious - a party in the spirit of indulgence – luxurious, relaxing and fun! Actually, ‘Zoso’ is derived from the Greek and the name means to have your balance restored – and to this goal – the Zoso lives up to its name. The Hotel Zoso is located in the center of the fun-filled and fancy-free atmosphere of central Palm Springs. Its unique positioning lets you be within walking distance of the hub of activities (The Palm Springs International Film Festival - which was a magnificent treat for us during our stay), eateries and chic restaurants for dining, shopping and entertainment (do not miss out on going to Blame It On Midnight – with a live entertainment lounge and a full restaurant). Once the playground of Hollywood’s elite, Palm Springs is now experiencing a renaissance in life and the Hotel Zoso is the place to begin your pleasure getaway. On the night of our arrival, the Zoso was hosting an “after party” for The Palm Springs International Film Festival and the following evening was a “Private Paparazzi Party” both of which all guests of the hotel were invited to attend the celebrations. This kind of hospitality is rarely found in hotels, but here, the guests were treated as welcome invitees to the festivities. The interiors of the Zoso have fabulous rooms that are divine and huge. The boutique style decoration and the additional space make this a destination, rather than just a stopover place. Our lanai was spacious enough to have

an intimate party while gazing at the heated pool and fire pits surrounding the area. The most lovely and pampering detail was the ‘sink into heaven’ Frette sheets that covered our soft, yet firm, beds. This is what is one of the most important things a hotel can offer – sweet dreamland luxury. The Zoso has an onsite bar and dining place – which has recently changed its name to Olivz (previously called Eatz), under the new ownership of the hotel. A refurbished and new medi-spa is currently in the works to add to the amenities that are already there for the indulgence of its patrons. The sounds and sights in the lobby area are complete with the soft bosa nova strains of music permeating the air and the sight is illuminated with brightly colored touches sparkling throughout the interior environment. The dining Sunday brunch experience was delightful, complete with champagne, personal servers, and anything you desired that could be obtained from the chef. We also had the opportunity to meet and speak with the new Director of Food and Beverage – Mr. Henning Rahm – a sensational new and cosmopolitan man of international background who added the continental touch, along with his own unique ideas for the future of the new Olivz – which he had helped in naming – (literally, it fits in with the Greek/Mediterranean feel of the hotel) and foresees a bright future for the restaurant. He noted that a food and beverage person has to be a bit of a psychologist in bringing the team together and making the restaurant a success. The

entire experience there was euphoric – and the service was definitely outstanding. An important note to all of you pet lovers – dogs are welcome guests at the Hotel Zoso – in fact, booking your room with your pet will get you a complimentary MANKINDdog basket in your room upon your arrival. No more worries about your unconditional loved pooch that was left behind while you went on holiday! Now – for your enjoyment – both entertainment and palette – please – do not miss the exceptional sensation of having giggles and fun at Blame It On Midnight conveniently located just a few steps away from the Zoso. This lounge and restaurant was highly recommended by the King of Confetti himself, Rip Taylor. Rip is a regular at the club whenever he is in Palm Springs. The club has an old-fashioned lounge atmosphere with grand piano, and the night we were there we were entertained by an old-fashioned lounge singer (Geninne) who even had her Compton, CA schoolmates from 1979, show up and join the rest of the audience in appreciating her fine performance. Craig Branzetti, the manager/owner and chef, spent a few minutes chatting with us. He told us that

frequent celebrities including Kelly and Sharon Osbourne, Nia Peeples, politician Barney Frank, Anne Lockhart, Rip Taylor, Tab Hunter and many others who join the locals and visitors for an evening of fun and dining. One thing you must not fail to have at this club is Mr. Branzetti’s mother’s recipe Banana Cream Pie – you cannot blame yourself for delighting at midnight in the devouring of this divinely decadent dessert! We each had to have a slice and did not bemoan our indulgence – it was that great! On the other side of the hotel, go into Sherman’s Delicatessen and Bakery, a truly good Kosher-style family restaurant. Down the street, another dining must – is the Fisherman’s Market and Grill – an inexpensive alternative that has some of the best fresh fish and more, and the and more includes a live blues band that had the crowd hopping, and dancing in the alley on the cool evening when we were there. All in all – take a break – it’s not far – and yet it is a true respite from your everyday existence – Palm Springs, make it your next, nearby getaway!

Why is estate planning so important? Life is full of wonderful memories. Chances are your favorite memories were created with your family by your side: people you care for, love, and for whom you would do just about anything.. One of the most important ways to continue to care for them is to make sure they are protected long after you leave them. The welfare of your loved ones is too important to leave to chance if something were to happen to you. Dealing with the loss or incapacitation of a loved one is difficult. Having a proper estate plan in place will provide peace of mind to both you and your family by ensuring that your wishes will be carried out when the time comes and not someone else’s. The continued protection and wellbeing of your family and loved ones is what makes estate planning so important.

So what is estate planning anyway? Estate planning is the process of planning how you will divide your property and assets upon your passing without going through probate, or court involvement. Having the appropriate legal documents in place will save you and your family time and money in dealing with the already challenging circumstances. Some of the documents everyone should consider incorporating into his/her estate plan are as follows.

the Living trust The Living Trust is a cost efficient way for you to ensure that your property and assets are distributed to your family according to your wishes. It also helps your loved ones avoid court involvement, or probate, in administering the affairs of your estate as well as avoiding guardianship in the event you were to become incapacitated.

the Last Will and testament The Last Will and Testament is one of the most essential legal documents every individual should have. It is similar to a trust in that it governs the distribution of property at your death. Last wills and testaments, or wills, are also used to nominate legal guardians for minor children, express your wishes regarding burial or cremation, and appoint someone to handle the administration of your estate.

Medical Directives/Living Wills Medical Directives, sometimes referred to as Living Wills, are documents that support your decisions regarding life support and feeding tube removal. Through medical directives you can make your wishes known now so someone else does not decide for you. Moreover, with medical directives, it is possible to remove the burden of making this decision from your loved ones by being proactive and making this decision now.

Powers of Attorney In Nevada, there are two kinds of Powers of Attorney: Powers of Attorney for Health Care Decisions and Powers of Attorney for Financial Matters. Both documents are used to appoint an agent to make either health care or financial decisions for you. Together with Medical Directives and Living Wills, Powers of Attorney can provide your loved ones with all of the decision making direction and authority necessary to carry out your wishes in the event of incapacitation while staying out of court. In the event the documents mentioned above are not put in place before they are needed, the following court processes may be necessary.

Guardianship Guardianship is a legal process managed by the court system wherein an individual is given the legal right to make decisions for another person. Guardianship of the Person is the process where an individual is appointed and made responsible for handling the health care decisions for an incapacitated person. Guardianship of the Estate is the process where an individual is appointed and made responsible for handling the financial affairs of an incapacitated person. By properly implementing a living trust, medical directives, and powers of attorney, guardianship can be avoided in most cases.

Probate Probate is a legal process managed by the court system that one’s family members have to go through in order to transfer the assets of a deceased person to that person’s family or loved ones if the previously discussed estate planning documents have not been established. Typically a probate proceeding can be very timely and expensive. Similar to avoiding guardianship, probate can be avoided by setting up and properly funding a living trust.

What if I already have an estate plan in place? Many people have already taken steps towards establishing an estate plan, however, an old or incomplete plan may not adequately protect the future interests of your loved ones by not accurately reflecting a change in your assets, your familial status as your children and loved ones grow older. Additionally, the laws surrounding estate planning are constantly changing, especially if you have moved from one state to another. Even if you already have an estate plan in place, it would be wise to review your plan every three to five years to ensure that your loved ones are protected especially if you have moved from one state to another as these documents are jurisdiction specific.

What do I need to do now to ensuremy family is cared for? The best practice for ensuring you have a sound and up-to-date estate plan is to have it reviewed regularly by an attorney who practices in the area of estate planning and asset protection. Changes may not be necessary, but an estate planning attorney can give you peace of mind in assuring that your plan is complete and adequate based on your situation in relation to current laws that may affect your plan. By following this simple advice, you are doing all that you can to make certain your wishes will be carried out when the time comes and not someone else’s.

What do you want in retirement? According to AARP Nevada research, fielded in January 2011, many

Nevadans (47%) envision a life of travel and leisure; others anticipate turning their hobbies into a second career (19%), and others just hope to have enough to live on. Retirement means different things to different people. Once you determine what will give you peace of mind as you age; however, it’s essential to know how you could get there financially. AARP can help you get started with 10 simple (and fun) tips to help you reach your goals.

Step 1: Define Your retirementWrite down your top goals for retirement. Think of it as a financial as well as spiritual bucket list. You need the money to fuel the dream after all. Perhaps you can keep a scrapbook or start a journal which outlines your goals and your steps towards achieving them. Some say that just by putting those goals onto paper, you create a greater intention towards achieving them.

Step 2: take Stock of Your “Assets” Write down how much you bring home each month, how much you have in the bank and how much you have in your retirement account. Then take the time to list all of your hobbies and skills – many can be turned into real income. Visit www.aarp.org/work/job-hunting/info-06-2009/recareering_transferable_skills.html.

Step 3: evaluate Your health Nowfor Long-term healthy LivingConsider scheduling your checkups and preventive exams sooner rather than later; from your annual physical to teeth cleaning. Remember that Medicare pays for some but not all medical costs—eyes, ears and teeth are generally not included in those medical benefits. Commit (or re-commit) to eating better www.aarp.org/food/healthy-eating , exercising, getting enough sleep and staying mentally sharp with brain games, puzzles and books http://games.aarp.org.

Step 4: Determine When to Collect Social Security The longer you wait to claim Social Security, the greater the benefit for you and your family. However, you’ll also want to consider factors such as your health, longevity in your family

and how much money you already have tucked away. AARP’s Social Security Benefits Calculator will show you the difference in benefits and when it could be best to claim: www.aarp.org/socialsecuritybenefits.

Step 5: Network through Social Mediato Stay Active and engagedInclude a networking strategy in your retirement plan; so that you always have social outlets and interests outside the home. It may involve joining a community book club you discovered via Facebook or starting a morning meet-up

Change is the only constant in this life. With mounting losses, retirees, who are growing larger in number every

year, are wondering how to adjust to the “New Normal.” Here are a few myths of retirement that you should avoid and some possible solutions towards overcoming them – if you have enough time still.

Myth Number one:The government will always take care of me. Okay, you can get up off the floor. I know that is a funny lie that few believe anymore – and for good reason. truth: Your government will be hardly able to manage meeting its own obligations let alone take care of you. Solution: If you still have time, invest heavily into a Roth IRA, 401(k) program or other privately managed retirement program. The key word here is private. Avoid large corporate or large government retirement funds like the plague. Most have sustained huge losses and may never recover. So take matters into your own hands. If you have the option of cashing out of your retirement and converting it to an IRA or even Roth IRA (you would have to pay taxes with a Roth conversion), then consider it strongly.

Myth Number two:Medicare will address all of my medical needs. truth: Medicare will either be broke or will have to ration services to even come close to meeting its obligations. You can probably depend upon standard, rationed care, but not much more. It will be the HMO model from Hades. Solution: In order to obtain good healthcare, you will probably need to either buy an expensive supplemental program add-on (think $600 a person or more) or try to fix what will be wrong now. In short, if you don’t have the money to buy a supplement and don’t want to be at the end of a very long line of people waiting for care, then the best choice is PREVENTATIVE care. Get on the treadmill. Stop smoking. Get a thorough medical exam to find out what you might be facing in the future and try to fix it now. Get ahead of the game while the getting is good. If you think a “run on the bank” looks bad, wait until you see a

run on healthcare when life or death is at stake. Beat the system and look at your future now and fix what will soon be broke.

Myth Number three:My family will take care of me. truth: Your children will likely take care of you, but it will be a heavy burden on them as you are likely to live into your nineties. Solution: Life expectancy is going to really surprise some. You are likely to live a lot longer than you think. What that means is you need to plan now for the long term. Talk to your children early and discuss what will happen when you are ninety and unable to afford an overcrowded rest facility of any degree of quality. Rather than ignoring the obvious, talk to your children about how you might work out an arrangement to take care of you in the twilight years. After all, they will likely be retirement age themselves when your greatest need arises, so do some early planning for everyone’s sake.

Myth Number Four:I will travel the world before I settle in. truth: Though you may have the desire to travel and spend a lot of that retirement money, your money is likely to run out before you do.

Asian art and style has long been a source of inspiration for fashion designers. In fact, whole brands, like Gwen

Stefani’s recently-announced Harajuku Mini children’s line, are based on the influence of Japan and other Asian nations. On the runways for fall 2011 and resort wear 2012, top brands and designers have revealed Asian-inspired offerings.

ralph Lauren At its fall and winter 2011 show, Ralph Lauren added Asian-inspired accessories to bring color to its otherwise neutral palette. Red, beaded earrings shaped like the lanterns traditionally hung for Chinese New Year adorned the ears of models. Jewelry with red and jade beads and geometric slides emblazoned with Chinese characters also played into the brand’s line.

Louis Vuitton Louis Vuitton’s women’s apparel line drew heavily from traditional Asian fashion for fall and winter 2011. The brand showed a black kimono with gold accents and a sexy, frontal slit from floor to the knee. Also among the designs on the catwalk was the Louis Vuitton purple shantung silk pantsuit with full-length pants and an Asian-inspired Mandarin collar.

Matthew Williamson The luxury fashion house Matthew Williamson showed a gorgeous kimono-inspired dress for resort wear 2012. The dress features royal and peacock blues with a trail of over-sized orchids traveling the length for a flattering, asymmetrical look. Although the design house showed the piece belted as a dress, it can easily convert to a chic cover-up for a stop at a cafe after a day in the sun.

The elderly are at a high risk for falling for a variety of reasons. Many take medications that increase the risk of

falls - and they may have problems with balance, reduced muscle strength, and poor vision. Compared with a child who falls, an elderly person is eight times more likely to die as a result of their fall. Because of the serious nature of falls in the elderly, it’s important to take steps to prevent them. A recent study looked at the effect giving high doses of vitamin D to prevent falls.

Vitamin D and Falls in the elderly Why use vitamin D to prevent falls in the elderly? Many elderly people are deficient in vitamin D – and one of the effects of low vitamin D levels is muscle weakness and decreased muscle strength. Several studies have shown that vitamin D supplements increase muscle strength in older people who have low levels of this vitamin. It also helps to preserve bone mass, which is important for preventing fractures.

Does Vitamin D in the elderly Prevent Falls? Several previous studies suggest that it does. On the other hand, the most recent study published this year in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggests otherwise. When researchers gave 2317 older women either one yearly dose of 500,000 I.U. of vitamin D every year or a placebo, they

found that the group who received the annual vitamin D not only fell more frequently but experienced 26% more fractures. Most of the falls and fractures occurred during the first three months of the study.

Vitamin D and Falls: Is Vitamin D Ineffective? This flies in the face of a previous study that showed that elderly nursing home residents who took 800 I.U. of vitamin D a day for five months experienced fewer falls. Why the discrepancy? In the most recent study, vitamin D was given as a single, high yearly dose, rather than as a daily supplement, which could have affected the results. This isn’t the customary way vitamin D is given – and less is known about the long-term effects of a single high dose.

Vitamin D in the elderly and the risk of Falls:the bottom Line? This is an issue that needs more study because of

these conflicting results, which could be related to how the vitamin D was given. One thing is certain. Most elderly people are deficient in vitamin D, which increases their risk for bone loss, cognitive impairment, depression, and weakness. Everyone,

especially those over the age of seventy, should have a vitamin D level checked to make sure they’re not deficient in this important vitamin.

Ready for Retirement? – continued from page 24

Top Myths – continued from page 26

Solution: Travel, but travel on the cheap. While you are at it, never, ever, ever do any of the following. These choices are bad for any person not drowning in money: (1) Buy an RV; (2) Buy a Timeshare; or (3) Buy a second home. I can think of virtually no good reasons that you would ever want to waste your money on such expenditures. Instead, consider renting an RV, Renting a vacation home or renting a second home for the summer. Have fun on your travels – don’t become married to the debt associated with travel.

group at a local coffee shop with other soon-to-be retirees. Not sure where to start? You can view Facebook pages on the internet without signing up for an account; so check out AARP Nevada’s and sign up to be a fan if you like us. www.facebook.com/aarpnv

Step 6: Decide how Much You Want(or Need) to Work Weigh the pros and cons of working – including how many hours per week - now. Some people work because they enjoy keeping busy, others want the security of a little extra income. The sooner you decide what your future holds in terms of work, the more secure you will be in your retirement planning. AARP Nevada volunteer Carlos Romo decided to use his talents and skills in a completely different way after he retired from his job as an administrator for a northern Nevada community college. Read the story of his second career here: www.aarp.org/work/working-after-retirement/info-08-2011/work-from-home-jobs-for-retirees.1.html.

Step 7: Create a retirement budget Create a retirement budget and do a financial checkup of your investments. The AARP Retirement Calculator can help: www.aarp.org/retirementcalculator. Additional resources are available at www.aarp.org/financialfreedom.

Step 8: Find New Ways to Cut Your expenses(and Start Saving More)Saving more now will always make you better prepared for retirement. Start by listing your bills and then figure out ways to trim them. Another strategy that works for many people: pay off your smallest debts first, regardless of interest rate, which can give you a sense of

accomplishment. Visit www.aarp.org/money/credit-loans-debt/info-09-2010/controlling-debt-and-finances.html.

Step 9: Prepare For the unexpected Take time to consider how you’d pay for minor issues, like a roof leak, to serious ones, like a grave illness. Discuss the big issues with your family or those closest to you. Visit www.aarp.org/decide. Also check all your insurance policies to make sure they are adequate.

Step 10: Stick to Your Plan (our Community Can help) Joining AARP’s online community will connect you with others going through the same life changes. The community holds a wealth of information and can be a source of comfort and strength, www.aarp.org/online_community. For more on retirement planning, visit www.aarp.org/readyforretirement.
