A Note About Discernmenton February 22 of this year, the congregation voted by a margin of 75% to 25% to enter a time of discernment. However, without a Senior pastor in place, we pushed the pause button. What is happening now? Since his arrival, Dr. Halvorson has concentrated on preaching the Sunday sermons and on meeting the people and learning the ministries of this church. This has allowed the congregation to get to know him and to better under-stand our shared mission. Through a series of informal meetings with groups and indi-viduals, alf has been taking this time to gather a variety of views regarding the future and direction of MDpc. next steps regarding discernment will be developed throughout the fall. We will unpack them as a congregation in 2016, with the goal of closure so that together we can move forward faithfully.

We have been looking at the Five Solas (Only’s) of the Reformation. Do you

appreciate congregational singing? Thank the reformers for reviving it. Do you believe that the Bible should be read in the language of the people? Thank the reformers. Do you think with communion you should have the bread and cup? Then thank the reformers for restoring the cup to lay people. Do you affirm “the priesthood of all believers,” that we are all ministers, empowered by the Spirit to show the love and justice of God to the world? If so, then thank the reformers. I could go on and on. The Protestant Reformation reversed a bad move away from good theological foundations, and it also was a move toward people – making the faith more accessible to all.

1. When you read Ephesians 2:8-10, what emotions hit you? Are you encouraged? Chal-lenged? Confused? Inspired?

2. Are we saved by “grace through faith” or by works? Defend your answer by Ephesians 2:8-10 and James 2:14-18.

3. What do Jesus’ words from Matthew 7:15-17 do to clarify this debate?

4. Martin Luther said, “Good works cannot make a person good; but a good person does good works.” In other words, you can’t be saved by trying to earn it by works. But, once saved by grace, you can’t help but bear the fruit of good works. I said in the sermon that we are saved for deeds but not by deeds. We are saved by grace through faith. Works confirm not cause salvation. Grace is offered to us just as we are, but it doesn’t leave us just as we were. Out of gratitude, we walk the faith out (we bear fruit). Does that explanation help, or do you still have questions? What are they, and how will you get them answered?

5. I told a story of Hal Halverson (no relation to me) who flew C47’s and C54’s during and after WWII. He became known as the “Candy Bomber” or “Uncle Wiggly Wings” for his work during the Berlin Air lift, giving children gum and chocolate. Because of all he had, out of gratitude, he shared. Out of the grace he received, he worked for others. I quoted Tom Brokaw who said, “This is the spirit of Christmas/Christianity. To give in response to the unearned gift of God’s Son for our salvation.” What might that look like in your life? What might be your two sticks of gum? How will this “way of life” grow and take shape in you and us (MDPC)?
