Padma Vibhushan Dr. Karan Singh :Our Hon'ble Chief Guest : A Profile

Born to Maharaja Hari Singh andMaharani Tara Devi of JammuKashmir, Dr. Karan Singh, our ChiefGuest entered politics at an early ageof 18. In 1949, he was appointedRegent by his father. Then heremained in that post, for the nexteighteen year and lastly as theGovernor.

In 1967, Dr. Singh became a memberof Union Cabinet, headed by the thenPrime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi.At 36, he was the youngest cabinetminister in India. Then he was elected to Lok Sabha from Udhampur,J&K. Thereafter, he was re-elected from there three times, in 1971,1977and 1980. He is now a member of the Rajya Sabha from Delhiand Chairman of the Ethics Committee. Dr. Singh held differentportfolios at different times. It included Tourism and Civil Aviation,Health and Family Planning in 1979. He never took salary nor livedin government bungalows!

He was the only former ruler, who voluntarily surrendered his privypurse, and put the entire sum into his parents, Hari -Tara CharitableTrust. He converted his Amar Mahal Palace in Jammu into a Museumand his personal library into Public Library.

He passed Senior Cambridge Examination from Doon Schools,Dehradun and graduated from Jammu and Kashmir University. Hedid his M.A. in Political Science with a gold medal and a record,which is still unbroken. He did his Ph.D. on the Political thought ofSri Aurobindo, from Delhi University.

He was the Chancellor of many prestigious Universities like Jammuand Kashmir University, The JNU and Chairman of Central SanskritBoard. He was also the president of the Commonwealth Society of

India, the Author's Guild of India and the Delhi Music Society. Beingassociated with many institutions, he has received several honorarydegrees and awards from the BHU and the AMU.

Being a lifelong conservationist, he remained as the Chairman ofthe Indian Board of Wildlife and the Head of Project Tiger, for manyyears. He was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 2005. He has writtenmany books on Political Science, Philosophical essays, traveloguesand poems in English. He has composed and recited songs in Dogri,his mother tongue and is an expert in Classical Music.

He has travelled all over India and abroad and is recognized as agreat thinker and leader. He is a famous orator and has lecturedon philosophy, culture, politics, education, environment and Vedanta.

He was married to Princess Yasho Rajya Lakshmi, Grand Daughterof the last Rana, Prime Minister of Nepal, Maharaja MohanShumsher. He has a daughter Jyotsna , and two sons Vikramadityaand Ajatshatru.

Singhdeo of Sarguja,Chairman, Managing Committee, Members of the Governing Body, Parents,Former Students, Members of the Press, Officiating Principal, Staff,Students, Ladies and Gentlemen.

As President of General Council, I warmly welcome you all on the occasionof the 121st Annual Prize Giving Function of the Rajkumar College, Raipur,Chhattisgarh.

It is our proud privilege to have Padma Vibhushan Dr. Karan Singhji, amidstus as the Chief Guest on this grand occasion of RKC fraternity. On behalfof the Management, I extend a warm welcome to him on this glorious day.We are indeed extremely grateful to him for sparing his precious time, tobe amongst us for this Annual Prize Giving Function.

Dr. Karan Singhji needs no introduction as he is an International personalityin his own right. Yet, I would like to share some aspects about our Hon'bleChief Guest. Born heir apparent to Maharaja Hari Singhji and Maharani TaraDevi of the Princely State of Jammu and Kashmir, Dr. Karan Singh wasinitiated into a life of politics at a fairly early age of eighteen when, in 1949,he was proclaimed the Regent by his revered father on the advice of PrimeMinister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and subsequently served Jammu andKashmir for the next eighteen years in various capacities such as Regent,elected Sadar-i-Riyasat and lastly as its Governor.

In 1967, he was the youngest Union Cabinet Minister in the Governmentof India. Apart from holding other responsibilities, he served as India'sAmbassador to the USA. The list of his achievements is endless. He is arenowned author, academician, statesman and an authority in Hindu religion.I could speak for hours together and still be unable to do justice to the statusof Dr. Karan Singhji.

It is a great honour to welcome you in the 121st Annual Prize Givingfunction.

It is our proud privilege to have Padma Vibhushan Maharaja Dr KaranSingh, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) as the Chief Guest onthis grand occasion of 121st Annual Prize Giving Ceremony.

I shall now present before you the annual report for Rajkumar College.

As a premier public school and founder member of IPSC, our schoolhas progressed from strength to strength in various fields. Unlike theassembly line culture schools of these days, our institution strivestowards overall and holistic development of the students. Holisticdevelopment is possible when a student is imparted training inacademics as well as extra-curricular activities. Therefore, we giveweightage to both. Let me first give an account of our academic resultsand then move on to sports and extra-curricular activities.

ACADEMICS

The academic year 2015-2016 has seen an extraordinary result. Thestudents of Class XII,ISC 16, have excelled. Out of 111 students takingthis exam, 98 scored first division and 13 second divisions. The totalnumber of distinctions were a staggering 270. The Commerce streamwas topped by Ritesh Agarwal who scored 96.5% and Science Streamwas topped by Ku. Shruti Gupta with 95%. The humanities stream wastopped by Ku. Prachi Tejwani with 93.5%. Ritesh Agarwal equalled theschool record by securing 99% in accounts. Ku. Shruti also equalledthe School record in Computer Science by securing 99%. In physicaleducation, three students Ku. Ruchi Chandravanshi, Ku. Mansi Singh

and Vedant Nagpal scored a perfect centum thereby creating a newschool record.

The students of Class X, ICSE 2016, also fared equally well. Of the146 students who took this exam, 134 secured First Division and 11Second Divisions. As many as 636 distinctions were secured. Ku. SejalRekhani and Ku. Suhani Brahme topped the Science Stream andPratham Parekh topped the Commerce Stream. Four students viz Ku.Suhani Brahme, Ku Avishi Agarwal, Master Suyash Singh and Ku.Sambhavi Malik scored 100% in Maths thereby creating a new schoolrecord. Ku. Sejal and Ku. Suhani equalled the school record by scoring98% in Social Science. Ku. Sejal also equalled the school record inScience stream by scoring 97%. In physical education four studentsviz Ku. Priyal Rathore, Ku Aditi Singh, Abhay Gupta and VaibhavBhansali equalled the school record by securing 100%.

My kudos to all the students and the faculty members for such anexcellent result.

Teachers Training : Training is a must to update the knowledge andexpertise. So, we continually update our teachers� professionalknowledge by sending them to various workshops and trainingsessions. We organized two English Language Teaching andphonetics work shops in the school, to train teachers. Dr Kamolini Deviattended the workshop for Political Science organized by the CISCEand Mr Samarendra N.S Deo will be attending similar workshop forHistory in Jan 2017. Mr Ramesh Chandra Khankeriyal and SanjayKumar Mishra attended a workshop on how to use the Whole Brainat Acumen Solutions.

Students Academics : We have initiated the system of organizedpreparatory classes by the subject teachers all six days in a week.These classes are in addition to the supervised evening study periodsof the boarders. In addition we have started a system of �Mentor�teachers for boarders. They are tasked to monitor the boarder�sprogress in various subjects and interact with the subject teachers toprovide extra help in weaker subjects. Separate extra classes forMaths and Science are also being held for middle level classes 6,7and 8th .

SPORTS AND EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES.

I have the honour to state that our students have done exceedinglywell in sports and extra curricular activities.

In football our Girls Team bagged the second runner�s up trophy inthe IPSC Under-19 tournament held at Mody School, Laxmangarh.Two of our girls Ku. Chandrawati Kashyap and Ku. Shreya Singh Deohave been selected for SGFI Football team.

In cricket, our boys team reached the Quarter Finals in IPSC U-17tournament held at Motilal Nehru Sports School, Rai. Kivnoor Chabrahas been selected to represent the Chhattisgarh State in U-14 team.

We introduced squash some years back. Ten of our students qualifiedto represent the State in the Junior Nationals conducted at DalyCollege, Indore. Debangshu Hazra reached the third round in thisChampionship. At the State and District level we have performedcommendably and won most of the individual events.

In Hockey, six of our boys were selected to represent the State teamat National Tournament.

In Archery, our students have shown great prowess. Two of ourstudents Sanskar Agarwal and Viswanath Agarwal bagged the fourthposition in the team championship at National Open Championship atJabalpur. They have also qualified for Junior Nationals.

The performance of our students in swimming has been notablypraiseworthy. A team of 17 students participated in state championship,held at Jagdalpur. Our Girls group secured the first and secondpositions.

Two students Ojesh Sinha and Chanchal Yadav were also selectedfor the Water Polo Team of the State for SGFI Games.

In the 9th Chhattisgarh Skating Competition our students won 8 GoldMedals and 9 Silver Medals. Ku. Shaivi Agrawal and Dhruvi Dhariwaldid the school proud by winning 02 Gold Medals each.

IPSC Music Competition : �Music is the language of the soul.� Twentyof our students participated in the Indian Public School ConferenceMusic fest at Scindia Kanya Vidyalaya, Gwalior. We secured the 2nd

position in the Indian Classical Orchestra and 1st position in the IndianClassical Instrumental Solo performed by Y Jahanavi.

Fine Arts : We give a lot of emphasis to fine art. Dedicated artteachers are available right from the Nursery classes to class XII. TheJunior and Middle Sections have utilized the talent of their studentsand staff to make their boundary walls bright and colourful by themepainting them. The Senior Section Art Department has worked on thewalls adjacent to Jashpur Hall. We also held a spot competition topaint/sketch the majestic panorama of our lake. Our Art and Craftexhibition would be showcasing all this.

Debates and Elocution :Many activities are organized throughout theyear like the Inter Set Elocution, Recitation and Debate. Ku. AnamKhan, Chetan Sharma, Ku. Supriti Sengupta and Ku. Richa Jaiswalparticipated in the Inter School Debate Competition at Gotan,Rajasthan, while Mukund Agrawal and Ku. Amisha Agrawal in theIPSC English Debate Competition held at Pilani. Adhiraj Singh and Ku.Shivantika participated in Jitendra Jain Memorial Debate Competitionat Kanger Valley Academy, Raipur. In addition eleven studentsparticipated in the Mock United Nations held at Rungta InternationalSchool.

Quiz Competitions : The interest quiz competition was conducted inwhich students from Class I onwards till class XII participated. Wehave installed a state of art �electronics computerized buzzer system�for the contestants for the buzzer rounds.

Dramatics : The usual set nights featuring inter set plays in Hindi andEnglish were held. The English plays enacted were �Merchant ofVenice� by Bikrams, �Two Gentlemen of Verona� by Aryans, �Macbeth�by Rajputs and �Hamlet� by Ranas.

Tours And Travels : Fifty five students went to Dubai and Abudhabifor educational tour in the month of May 2016. Sixty other studentswill be going to Ahmedabad, Mt Abu and Udaipur in December. Twentyfive students will be going to Pune, Mahabaleshwar and Mumbai inthe last week of December during the winter vacation.

Batch Meets And Reunions : Batch meets and Reunions are greatoccasions when RKCians remember their time spent in RajkumarCollege. This year the batch of ISC of 1981 had their Reunion in themonth of January this year. 25 old RKCians relived their school days.Shortly after this PG function two more reunions are scheduled inwhich ISC 1986 and ISC 1987 batches would be revisiting their almamater.

Visits : Two of our eminent ex students Justice A Patnaik, retiredJudge of the Supreme Court and Mr KB Nanda, financial Commissioner,Railway Board visited their alma mater to relive old times.

NCC Report :- Out of 23 Air Wing Cadets appeared for �A� certificateof Examination, 22 Cadets have passed with �A� Grade and one with�B� Grade. Our first Air Wing Senior Division Cadet Amber Khan andArmy Wing Cadet Ku Akansha Choubey participated in the Pre RDCCamp. In the NCC Air Wing Camp featuring all schools, Cadet AryanVerma got the 1st Prize in Inter Troop Firing Competition and CadetOm Singh Rathore got the 2nd prize in Banner painting competition.Our school got the overall best troop in Air Wing for the 1st time in13 years. My congratulations to all the cadets and ANO Mr DaljeetSingh.

DEVELOPMENT AND IMPROVEMENT OF INFRASTRUCTURE

Over the last few years there has been a constant emphasis to addfacilities for the students as also look after our heritage property.Towards this we have constructed a new hostel �Rajkumar CollegeBoarding House,� which would inaugurated by the Hon�ble Chief Guestimmediately after this function. The elevation and façade of this hostelis modeled on our main building. The hostel is also equipped with amulti purpose enclosed playing field and other sports facilities. We cannow boast of state of the art bathrooms and toilets in all our boardinghouses and academic blocks. We have commissioned the constructionof the �New Wing� of our Middle Section comprising of an assemblyhall and six state of the art class rooms.

We have also added an international standard swimming pool namedafter Kumar Hemendra Chandra Singh of Nayagarh who contributedgenerously towards it. A new billiard table has been installed which

has been donated by Dr S.N Mishra our affiliated physician in thememory of his son Vaibhav Mishra. One new squash court is beingcommissioned which will provide us with a total of three squash courts.We are also in the process of commissioning a new grass lawn tenniscourt adjacent to the junior section which will also double up as theenclosed play field of the tinytots.

For our senior teaching staff we are in the process of constructing 16new quarters. For the sub staff, bathrooms and toilets are beingconstructed to cater for each quarter.

An automated industrial laundry facility has been installed and newquarters for the washerman have been constructed adjacent to it.

The West Gate has been renovated to look like North and East Gates.The perimeter boundary wall has been strengthened and raised toensure safety.

We are in the process of large scale ecological improvement of theCampus. Towards this we have planted 800 sal tree saplings.Moreover

the college lake has been excavated and beautified leading to majorwater harvesting of the rain water.

New Appointments. Ms Sheneha Khan joined our Middle Sectionwhile Mr N Prasad, Ms Manjari Singh and Ms Nishita Naicker left ourinstitution. We wish them all the best.

Obituary. We mourn the sad demise of two of our beloved lifemembers Raja R B Singh of Khairagarh and Raja Shishirbindu Singhof Sarangarh. We also mourn the sad demise of the our Principal, DrJayant Bahadur Singh.

Before concluding my report, I would like to once again thank Dr KaranSingh, our Chief Guest for sparing his time and gracing this functionwith his benign presence in our P.G. Function.

I would sincerely place my deepest regards and gratitude for thehonourable members of Governing Body who have provided us withall the moral and financial support. The President, General Council andChairman, Managing Committee have made themselves available at

short notice for any decision or advice inspite of their busy schedule.Thus, major credit should go to the management for the progress ofour institution.

I would also like thank all members of the staff, both teaching andadministrative, for their valuable contribution. I am profoundly thankfulto the heads of three wings Ms. E.Rodgriques, Senior Section, Ms.Nandini Choudhary, Middle Section and Ms. A.D.Sapre, Junior Sectionalong with their Assts. Ms. Chitwan Singh and Ms. S.F Siddiquitowards the progress of the school. I am grateful to Mr. SNS Deo, ourAsst. Bursar for his meticulous work to make this grand function asuccess. One special mention about the dedication of Mr. Surendranthe inventory manager and Mr. B.R. Sahu, the building superintendentwho worked tirelessly round the clock. A special mention about thegood work being put in by the sub staff would also be in order aswithout their effort the school would not have progressed.

As the school motto goes, �Swadeshe Puyate Raja, Vidvan SarvatraPujyate� let the RKCians be learned enough to be respected whereverthey go.
