welcome to Prime magazine...

Over the coming issues we will be bringing you the best prime cuts from the creative students of the UK, including photographers, illustrators, animators and other disciplines, but back to this issue, we are pleased to introduce the graphic designers.

This time of year there are hundreds, if not thousands of students leaving universities all over the country and with so much talent bursting into the real world who will get the best jobs out there?! Prime Magazine is trying to filter some of this talent towards the people who need to see it, namely the creative professionals currently working in the industry.

We are focusing solely upon students, not just giving you a brief overview like other

magazines, but a more in-depth look at a range of creative’s across the country, what work they are producing and any others activities they are getting up to.

This issue is based around the graphic design students of Plymouth, whom are a talented bunch to say the least, situated on the sometimes sunny south west coast of Devon. Hopefully the work inside will at the least inspire you, and at the best, well that’s for you to decide, but should you feel the need to contact anyone featured, we’ve usefully included some important contact details for each designer.

So sit back, grab a cuppa and be inspired by the next generation of graphic designers.

For each issue we host a judging evening at our gallery in London. All of the entries for that issue will be exhibited / displayed and a panel of industry profrssionals will spend an evening looking through the work and selecting the best entries, which will then be featured in the magazine.

Often there are exhibitions of student work at the gallery, both private and public, and these events are posted on the website.

no sweat magazine

No Sweat Magazine is a loose leaf magazine

creating awareness of sweat shops and what

can be done to prevent further exploitation.

The magazine holds the concept of ‘unfolding

the truth about sweatshops’, which is why

each article unfolds in a different way, with the

envelope unfolding into an A2 poster.

tehidy country Park

Tehidy Country Park was a very personal

project for me as I’d been there many times

throughout my childhood. The current signage

is very dated and unclear so change was

needed. My response was to create a series

of tower signs, using a different colour for

each area of the park. Using simple, clean

typography and images of the park on each

sign, the towers appeal to people of all ages

and finally make navigation of the park

much easier.

the body shop

This is a campaign to reinvigorate the Body

Shop as a brand. I created four posters and

a range of packaging. The posters are for

different parts of the body that the Body Shop

catering for. They use quotes and poetry about

those parts of the body which are set into an

asymmetric composition. I used skin and hair

colours to keep the posters looking neutral

and natural.

After having a very successful year of various guest lectures from some of the big names in graphic design, we spoke to Jake Jennings, founder and chairman of the Designers Society in Plymouth.

The society has a large committee who do everything from organising lectures, social events and competitions, to designing posters to advertise events and the society.

You can see some of the these posters throughout the interview.

Prime magazine | Summer 2010

Prime magazineHi Jake, What exactly is the Designers Society?

Jake JenningsThe designers society is an attempt to get all creative courses across the university to mix and integrate. I think that it is so important to get inspiration from other disciplines and look at other areas of creativity. Plus when we finish university we will be without any contacts or knowledge of other fields and this is an attempt to help with that, getting to know each others work.

It is also about getting our students known in the creative industry. We are a backwater place - although its really hotting up this year with three creative societies forming in Plymouth but we need to get noticed.

We also will enter with such a gap in our knowledge and through lectures, workshops and events we hope to bridge that gap.

Finally it is a chance for people to see who they want to see, who they idolise within the creative industry and share that with others. We only invite down who others suggest.

It has broadened out to encompass so many areas of creativity, working with local creative businesses, the local community, the council and we do so many things it is more a question of what we are not!

Katarina Gatialova guest lecture poster

Page 38: Prime Magazine

PmSo how did the idea of the society come about?

JJStarted after a discussion in a group rep meeting - I wanted to get more guest lectures down and people who would talk less about their work but about their experiences as a creative, ultimately what we were lacking in our education. David, our lecturer said that I should start up a society and I kept putting it off for the year until it came to the last meeting, everyone was talking about how I should start it and so went ahead. Friendly pressuring, haha!

3

As well as putting on social events for its members, including film nights, competitions, exhibitions, and a trip to the 4 Designers Conference in London they have had many guest lectures from the likes of Patrick baglee, the Director of Creative Strategy at Navyblue, harry Pearce, from Pentagram, michael greenland of Greenland Studio and si scott, an Illustrator and graphic designer at Si Scott Studios, to name just a few.

PmHave any of the designers you have had to speak or visit kept contact with the society and its members?

JJAll of them. For example Patrick Baglee is returning to do portfolio reviews at the end of this term and I regularly keep in touch on a monthly, or more, basis with the other designers. Mainly updates as to what we are doing but also general chitchat too. Plans to meet up when in London etc.

PmHas the society been involved with any local or national live projects / briefs?

JJWe are working closely with the council on the ‘Jigsaw Project’, designing what goes in the empty space between the University and Drake Circus. We set the brief and worked with a variety of architects, fine artists and graphic designers to create a space that is being built and hopefully fully opened next month.

PmWhat does the Designers Society have planned for next year?

JJWell there is already a new committee, as

many of the current members are leaving due to finishing University. We shall be looking at building more links with the local community and creative network as well as continuing to get some of the best designers in the country for guest lectures.
