GoalsforBehaviourManagement
AtAl-TaqwaCollege,weaimtodevelopourstudentscharacter,promotepositivebehaviour andpromoteasafe,respectfulandcaringenvironmentforallstudentsandteachers.Thiswillenableourstudentstobettermanagedifficultandstressfulsituations,developselfcontrolandmasteryinmanagingthemselves,theirbehaviourandrelationships.ThiswillallowthemtoreflectupontheirchoicesinordertomakethenecessarychangestotheirbehaviourasglobalMuslimcitizens.
ThePrimarySchoolsupportsthewelfareandwellbeingofstudents,theirfamiliesandstaff.TheSchoolcounsellorsalsoaimtoprovideassistancestoaccess relevantservicesandinformation,andsupportstudentsindividuallyoringroupsettings.
Theseguidelineswillbeforstudents,staffandparents.
Thesuccessofthisprocessisbasedupontherecognitionoftheself-respectandworthofallstudents,staffandparents.

Restorativepracticesisanemergingfieldofstudythatenablespeopletorestoreandbuildcommunityinanincreasinglydisconnectedworld. (www.iirp.org)
Restorativepracticeisanapproachthatenablestherepairofrelationshipsthathavebeendamaged,includingthosedamagedthroughbullying.Itdoesthisbybringingaboutasenseofremorseandrestorativeactiononthepartoftheoffenderandforgivenessbythevictim.Thismethodisnotaboutsimplypunishingoffenders,butratherholdsoffendersaccountablefortheirerrors,whichmayhelpreducereoffending.
Aschoolthatappliesrestorativepracticeaimstoallowthevictimsandoffendersandtheirrespectivecommunitiesofcaretobeactiveparticipantsinprocessesthatensureequaljusticeandfairness.
Therationalebehindthisapproachisthatwhenoffendersreflectupontheirharmtovictims:
• Theybecomeremorsefulandactrestoratively.• Practitionerscanfocusontheunacceptablebehaviourofoffendersratherthantheirmoral
character• Healthierinterpersonalrelationsdevelopedamongmembersoftheschoolcommunity.

1. Restorativepracticecanbeundertakeninavarietyofforums.Itmaybeconductedwithvaryingdegreesofformalityandmayincludejustthosestudentsmostdirectlyinvolvedinbullyingorinsomecircumstancesawholeclass.‘CommunityConferences’includesupportivethirdpartiessuchasfriends,familiesandpossiblyacommunityfiguresuchasapolicecommunityliaisonofficer.Thisforumisusedtoaddressconcernsofbothindividualsandthewidercommunity.
2. Theworkinschoolswithcasesofbullyingiscommonlyguidedbyflashcardsoranagreedscriptwhichdirectpractitionerstoasktheoffendertodescribewhathappenedandtoreflectonwhatharmwasdone.Thevictimisaskedtosayhowsheorhehasbeenaffectedandwhatneedstobedonetomakeamends.
3. Feelingsofshamethatareelicitedneedtoleadtore-integrationintothecommunityratherthanasenseofbeingalienatedandstigmatised.
4. Inthespiritofpersonalresponsibility,forgivenessandcommitmenttopositivefuturebehaviour,boththevictimandtheoffenderexpresstheiracceptanceoftheproposedsolution/sanddiscusswhatcanbedonetopreventarecurrence.
5. Thesituationisthenmonitoredbyschoolstaffmembersandfurtherinterventionoccursifthesituationdoesnotimprove.

Tohelpthoseaffected:• Whatdidyouthinkwhenyourealizedwhathadhappened?• Whatimpacthasthisincidenthadonyouandothers?• Whathasbeenthehardestthingforyou?• Whatdoyouthinkneedstohappentomakethingsright?
Restorativepracticescanalsobeappliedtoothermisbehaviours,suchasansweringbacktoteachersorvandalisingschoolproperty.Itallowsstudentstorightthewrongthathasbeendone.Itprovidesaplatformforstudentstoworkthroughproblems/misbehaviours andallowsthemtocollaborativelycometoasolution,butalsoensuresthattheyaredealtwithinarespectfulmanner.
Repercussionsshouldfitthemisbehaviour andstudentsshouldbegiventheopportunityto‘rightthewrong’.Punitivemeasureswilloftenhavethereverseeffectofwhatweintendandresultsinresentmentandfurtherbullyingifgiveninresponsetoabullyingincident.Arestorativeprocesswillalsogivestudentsavoice,boththevictimandtheoffenderandensuresstudentsaredealtwithfairly.
Theteacher–studentrelationshipisoneofthemostpowerfulelementswithinthelearningenvironment.Apositiverelationshipbetweenteachersandstudentsmayinfluenceastudent’sacademicoutcomesandbehaviour.Supportiveandpositiverelationshipsbetweenteachersandstudentscanpromotea“senseofschoolbelonging”andencouragestudentsto“participatecooperativelyinclassroomactivities”.
