Changes at the Nursing DepartmentRoslyn is now joined by Wendy, who replaced Lisa in the Nursing Department.

Wendy is also a Registered Nurse, who has been working in Community Health in a small African country, Malawi, for the last 20 years. Previous to that she was working at Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide.

Together we aim to provide a warm friendly environment for the children who find themselves seeking our help. The nurse’s station regularly sees 50 to 60 children a day so you can imagine that at times we are run off our feet. We do our best to inform parents of the main health concerns by phone. Otherwise, we will send a First Aid Attendance Form home with each visit a child makes to us. However, we are happy to know or discuss specific health concerns you may have about your child.

We have had a recent outbreak of viral gastroenteritis – we ask parents to exclude their children from school during this phase as this will help stop the virus from going through the whole school. We do appreciate the efforts families have made to help in this regard.

We would also like to thank parents who have sent in their child’s updated Action Plans, when they have expired. Please come and meet us at the Open Day this Saturday 3 September or at the School Fete on Saturday 8 October, where we will have a Health Care Booth.

Recently a bout of AAA Influenza virus has been sweeping the Western suburbs of Melbourne. Please take care and see your doctor if you are feeling unwell. Monitor the progress of the virus in everybody from adults to children and do not hesitate to return for medical assistance and support when required. Ways to prevent the spread include, washing hands with warm soapy water, sneezing and coughing into tissues and discarding into covered bins, eat healthy food and drink lots of water and rest. Take care of yourselves and each other.

Also, Anaphylaxis is a serious life-threatening allergic reaction. The College Anaphylaxis Policy stipulates strict requirements to ensure our students and staff are safe. It is important that you support us by ensuring that students are not bringing in food to share and they are understanding of the seriousness of this condition. Please help us to keep our College safe at all times. Thank you.

Car Park Safety – Due to the building activities at 229, please note that the car park areas will change from time to time to accommodate for the construction. Foundation & Grade 1H A P P Y D A Y S I N F O U N D A T I O N A N D G 1

On Friday 5th August, our lovely Foundation students celebrated 100 days at school. It was a very colourful and exciting day for all those who participated.

Our Foundation building came alive with colourful displays of everything “100”- 100 words, pictures, letters etc. The most popular attraction of the day was the 100 days at school t-shirts that our students wore. Thank you to our lovely parents for all the hard work in creating colourful and creative designs on their child’s t-shirts.

We are very pleased with the progress students have made so far for this year and look forward to seeing them further develop as the year continues.

Secondly, we would like to congratulate our grade 1 students on their first year in the swimming program, it was a great success. Our students were exposed to the basics of water safety, floating and learning to swim. As expected, the behaviour of our students was excellent, mashaAllah!! Well Done Grade 1’s, we look forward to seeing greater results as you continue with the swimming program in grade 2.

Once again a big thank you to our parents and students and an even bigger thank you to our teaching and support staff who made this day possible.

Grade 2 & 3 NewsThis term really raced by and we stand on the edge of the summer holidays. Soon it will be time for the children to move up to their new year group. The children have all worked hard and approached all tasks with their customary enthusiasm. They have really grown in confidence and independence. Every member of Grade 2-3’s deserves to be really proud of their dedication, hard work and commitment that they have put into every aspect of school life.

T H E H I G H L I G H T S O F T E R M 3 W E R E :

• Active kids- where the children took part in learning and building up their cricket and tennis techniques and skills.

• Recycling Materials- an educationalist (Wyndham City Council) came to talk to the Grade 2-3 children about ways to recycle household rubbish and school litter.

• Tree Planting Day - all Grade 3’s were involved in planting a small plant/shrub at the front of the school. Mr Hallak and other school leaders attended, with Mr Hallak helping to plant a new tree. The children really enjoyed this day as it gave them an insight on how to organise, dig and plant new flowering plants and local natives.

Tree Planting Day

• Olympic Parade - as the Olympic Games were happening this year in Rio, the children in Grade 2-3 were all excited to participate in their own way. They got involved in making flags, banners and singing a rousing chant to help support their class showcase events. The Mexican wave was funny to watch; it was more of a small ripple than a huge tidal wave!

• Science Week - as part of each Grade 2-3 class topic work, each class made models to show something they had been learning about, as well as, doing their own individual science experiment demonstrations. The Judges were so impressed, they voted the Grade 3’s as the best with science experiments!

Science Fair - A huge success!

• Serendip Sanctuary - all the Grade 3’s went to this lovely nature park in Lara (Geelong). They learnt about looking after native plants/animals as well doing ponding (catching small pond water creatures). They saw lot of creatures that they would not otherwise see near their homes. It was an enjoyable but tiring day full of walking and fun activities.

• Book Week - the days passed in a flurry of productivity, action and enjoyment; the children in Grade 2-3 were captivated and fully engaged in tasks and activities created by their teachers. The Grade 2-3 shared a special assembly where they shared an array of costumes and props, testifying to the ingenuity of the whole family in producing stunning outfits. All the class teachers were unrecognisable as they wore fantastic character costumes - everybody entered into the spirit of Book Week. Children also took part in Book Swap, Read with a Buddy, Library Activities, Bring-A-Blanket day during the week. What a busy but exciting time all had.

Our 2016 Book Week

• Orienteering and Lego Construction - as part of Numeracy Week, the Grade 3 children had the opportunity to develop their navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from point to point. The Grade 2’s had the opportunity to build tall buildings using Lego construction material and doing number sentences using Lego models.

• Swimming - Grade 2’s students looked forward for a fantastic time at the new AquaPlus for two weeks. Students were grouped according to their abilities after the first session as they continued to learn basic swimming skills. Swimming teachers commended the children for their good manners.

What a super term overall, full of work, learning and fun! We hope Term 4 will also be as exciting as the previous one.

Thank you all very much indeed for being wonderful, supportive parents; continue the good work!

Year 4-6 NewsD E A R P A R E N T S ,

August has been a busy, yet fun filled month for students and teachers alike. The 15th of August saw the start of Science Week; upper primary students were in a recycled world frenzy as they poured in much effort and hard work into creating sustainable villages from recycled material, building robots and conducting magnet experiments as well as taking on the Egg Challenge, all in the name of Science.

Book Week and Literacy Week were also the highlights for the month. The opening ceremony was a chance for our students to parade in their favourite book character costumes and it was a perfect platform for our guest speaker, Eugenia Flynn (Indigenous Muslim Writer/Arts Worker) to speak to our students about the importance of writing about characters that reflect who they are as Australian Muslims. Our Grade 5 and 6 students also delved deeper into the history of Muslims in Australia dating back from the days of the Cameleers during a session with Brother Abdulshaeed.

Our 2016 Book Week

Our Debating Team took to the stage this month with two in-house debates to argue for and against vaccinations and for/against closing Australian borders to refugees. Teams of both sides put their best arguments forward in an attempt to sway the audience and the adjudicators.

This internal debate was a great rehearsal for our debating team as they prepare to participate in regional debates across Victoria.

We would like to thank all of our Grade 5 parents/guardians who took the time to join us for the Grade 5 Mothers Bonding Session. It was great to see all participants eager to take part in the quizzes, have a laugh and join in the fun. We hope to organise more activities like this across the year levels, to build stronger parent/teacher bonds at our College.

We are pleased to announce that we have received enough expression of interest for the Northern Territory camp to proceed for our 2017 Grade 6 students. More details regarding deposit payments and dates will be sent out to parents before the end of term 3.

As a follow up from last term and continuing into this term, all grade 4, 5 and 6 classes are running circle time activities on a weekly basis that focus on the emotional wellbeing of our students. This month with the many sports activities taking place at our school, the focus of our circle times has been sportsmanship and empathy to help students understand and share the feelings of others. We strongly encourage parents to discuss these topics further with their child at home.

Upcoming activities for the Upper Primary Department include:

• Bachar Houli Cup at Yarra Park for selected students• Grade 5 camp to Coorong Term 4• Orienteering and Legos Brick Construction as part of Numeracy Week• Wyndham Spelling Bee September 6 (Good luck to our students) K I N D R E G A R D S

Science Week22-26 AugustWhat a spectacular event organised by the Science Faculty!

It indeed was a very busy week for the Department with various activities including bath bomb making, a Lego robotics incursion, cake decorating and much more. The best part of the Science Fair was the display of student work in the MPH on Friday 26 August. Unbelievable! What some students had creates was beyond our expectations. The hall came alive with working models which the students took pride in presenting. Some even had a hovercraft operated by blue tooth, while others had working catapults, windmills, buzzers, volcanic eruptions, and so much more. Competitions were also organised which were running in another eight class rooms. These included, building a bridge, hovercraft, earthquake resistant tower, baby lifesaver jackets, parachute egg lander, newspaper tower and bionic hand. The event continued with the parents and senior students joining us at the end of the day. Many took time out to solve the murder mystery organised by our 10B girls. Success comes with teamwork and support. We cannot forget to thank the teachers who gave us immense support throughout the event as well as all our Science teachers who motivated and inspired our students with awesome display ideas. We hope that you all enjoyed the 2016 science Fair.

AchievementsY 1 1 / 1 2 B A C H A R H O U L I C U P C H A M P I O N SOn Wednesday 3 August, our Year 11/12 boys defeated Al-Siraat with a score of 117 to 7 in our first game. Being the defending champions, we were determined to show our mantle. Al-Siraat was determined to keep the scoreline low but once our Captain Khaled H started to inspire our team with his mazy runs, our boys were scoring at will. Our stout defence was marshalled by Hamza, our Vice Captain, who did not let in any goal in the first half. He was well supported by his teammates Ali A and Ibrahim.Khaled H worked in tandem in the midfield with Mohamed

C and Mohamed H to provide the passes to our forwards; Shady, Mahmoud and Ali. Our school completely dominated our second game against Minaret. We defeated them with a score of 122 to 0. Alhamdullilah this is the first of the three Bachar Houli trophies that we are aiming for this year.

T A E K W O N D O C H A M POur primary sports teacher, Ms Sarah entered the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Perth on Saturday 30th July. Poomsae is the technical aspect of Taekwondo (as opposed to the sparring which is in the Olympics) The competition is based on athletes performing a set routine in front of 7 judges who score based on accuracy and presentation of the pattern and its moves. Ms Sarah won the gold medal in her individual division and qualified. She was selected for a place on the Australian team to travel to Lima, Peru in the first week of October. While this isn’t her first time on the Australian team, this is the first time she has qualified for an individual place. Ms Sarah is extremely excited and looking forward to the chance to compete and continue to learn and improve. Congratulations Ms Sarah.

M A H N O O R Great news as Nasya is been selected again for 2016/17 squad. She is looking forward to work with Golf Victoria head professional’s this year again.

During Week 5, each Grade 4, 5 and 6 class represented a country of the world and created their own banners, flags and chants to support their class team. The students took part in competitive and exciting matches against other classes and, during the tournament, students used their flags to cheer on participating students.

There was a real sense of sportsmanship and comradeship throughout both the basketball and soccer tournaments. Most importantly, there was an incredible amount of money raised for charity during the tournaments. The sadaqa went towards the $2000 donated to the Royal Children’s Hospital. The basketball tournament winners were Grades 4D & 5G, 5D, 6E. Soccer tournament winners were 4D & 5G, 5A, 6E. A fantastic effort and well done to all!

DEBATING NEWS We had a very good round of debates during the first week of August. The Year 9 students did us proud by winning their debate against Emmanuel College. They strongly defended their arguments on why they believed that women’s sports should get equal media coverage to men. Nayla and Zainab tied with the best speaker. Our Year 10 students went down fighting by a point against Bayside College when they said that Schools should not allow Corporate sponsorship but on a good note Shanoora was awarded Best Speaker. Lastly, the Year 11 students too won their debate against Werribee Secondary College. Thank you everyone for your support. F A I E K H A S C H R O E D E R A N D L O R R A I N E P A U L .

On behalf of the Primary Islamic Department, we wish this Ramadan you are gifted with the blessings of Allah and many treasured moments of joy.

This Ramadan has been full of accomplishments, activities and celebrations in the Islamic Department and across the Primary School.

Kicking off the Holy Month, the Ramadan Food Drive was an absolute success, thanks to the generosity of Al Taqwa Parents and Students. Food items were donated across the school for Muslim families in all parts of Melbourne who are underprivileged. These families include both migrants and those who are just doing it tough. Eighteen large wheelie bins, 13 medium sized bins and two large boxes were filled with the generous amount of food donated by Al Taqwa families, mashAllah. Needy individuals and families had their food packs delivered in the first week of Ramadan. It was reported to us that when deliveries were made, it was heart wrenching to see the meals the needy families had planned to eat for Iftar that night. We thank you for your generous donations and care towards our brothers and sisters. May Allah provide them with all they need and more inshAllah.

On the first day of Ramadan, Opening Ceremonies announced the welcoming of Ramadan. Each year level created their own Ramadan fanous (lantern) and sang the Ramadan Nasheed for this year. Students also took part in a teacher versus student fun quiz, listened to a mini talk about the importance of Ramadan and viewed Ramadan at Al Taqwa clips.

Zaky also visited our Grade Foundation – Three students this year. He showed students the latest Zaky Ramadan video and provided students with both cuddles and entertainment which was thoroughly enjoyed. Students were also thrilled to receive Zaky Showbags.

This year, sadaqa donated by Al Taqwa students towards the Royal Children’s Hospital amounted to $2880! This beat last year’s donations by more than $1000! Mrs Assafiri, Mrs Olga and the School Captains visited RCH with the substantial cheque on behalf of Al Taqwa College. School Captains were given a tour of the hospital’s main facilities and the donation was passed on to help the unwell children and the caring staff at RCH, inshAllah.

On the 14th of June 2016, we were privileged to have 120 students from Point Cook College visit Al Taqwa Masjid to learn about Islam during Ramadan. The session with these students was rewarding and positive for all involved. Along with SRC students, teachers from the Islamic Department showed the students through the masjid. After the tour, Mr Abdulshaheed gave a short speech to the students about the Holy Month of Ramadan. Ibrahim Khalifa from 3E also recited Quran beautifully for the students and gave the athan, mashAllah. The Point Cook College students asked many questions and were keen to learn all about our religion. It was a great morning and we hope to see them again next year, inshAllah.

One of the Ramadan in-school events this year was the Ali Gator Book Fair. The Ali Gator Book Fair was held in the library over five days during week 10 and 11 of this term. Students across the primary school were able to browse the collection of Islamic books and resources brought into the school from Islamic Books & Clothing (IBC). The turn out of students was fantastic and there were many Islamic based stories and texts for reading and purchase.

In addition to all the Ramadan festivities this term, students conducted their end of semester Performance Tasks and Assessments. Performance Tasks took place in class during week 7 and end of unit tests took place in week 9. Wishing our students all the best in their results, inshAllah!

We wish you a wonderful end of term and a blessed Holy Month, inshAllah.
