Rationale and introduction
Organisation of the book (and CD-ROM version)
The National Curriculum for Mathematics aims for children to “become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice…………”. The content of this product has been developed to provide children with regular practice in arithmetic in order to develop a deep understanding of the concepts taught, build number fluency and enhance progress.
The product contains:
• A hard copy book, with 140 pages providing practice of the objectives within the yeargroup. (PDF version is also available on the CD-ROM)
• A CD-ROM version, which is a mirror image (but different calculations) of the hard copy book• Six standardised assessment tests within the CD-ROM
The quantity and range of pages will save teachers immeasurable time and allow them to focus on planning for high quality teaching. There are sufficient pages for daily practice, even if teachers choose not to make use of every page, or they wish to focus on practising particular concepts or domains.
The book is divided into units, which address the arithmetic objectives within the domains for number and fractions, decimals and percentages. The units are sub-divided into hierarchical learning objectives, which provide meaningful practice towards the Year 6 expectations; the contents pages detail the objectives within each unit.
In a comparable way to the National Curriculum arithmetic tests, each question has a grid area for appropriate working out (some children may require additional space to complete some questions). The curriculum expects children to be able to use formal calculation methods, and so some questions are already set out as a formal calculation to indicate the method required. This is detailed, for teachers’ use, in the contents pages.

Provides practice of the objective, at a relatively simple level.
Provides opportunities to consolidate understanding of the objective and/or recall number facts with speed and accuracy.
Provides opportunities to recall number facts with speed and accuracy.
May provide opportunities to work towards Year 6 expectations.
Provides practice of the objective to meet Year 6 expectations.
Provides opportunities to further practise the skills and/or recall number facts with speed and accuracy.
Not usually accessible.
May provide opportunities for significant additional challenge.
Provides practice of the objective, at a challenging level.
DifferentiationThe National Curriculum document states:
“The expectation is that the majority of pupils will move through the programmes of study at broadly the same pace.” However, the curriculum suggests that children who grasp the concept more quickly should be provided with sufficient practice to fully embed those concepts, before accelerating further, and those who need to consolidate their learning further should be given that opportunity.
Within this book, three differentiated sections give children the opportunity to practise the objectives, and they provide a flexible means for teachers to meet children’s varying abilities. The difficulty level within each section is highlighted in the contents pages, so that teachers can see at a glance what children will be expected to complete.
The table below is a guide for using the sections:
Furthermore, most units are sub-divided into hierarchical learning objectives e.g.
Unit 1 Addition: Add whole numbers with up to 3 digits Unit 1 Addition: Add whole numbers with up to 4 digits Unit 1 Addition: Add whole numbers with 4 or more digits
This gives teachers increased flexibility in planning appropriate differentiation to meet children’s learning needs.

When to use the pages
Assessment
There is a range of options for the teacher to make effective use of the pages, all of which will save teachers time and allow them to focus on planning highly effective teaching.
• Short periods in the day, which are available for practice of skills e.g. during registration.• During lessons, when children need to practise the calculations being taught.• During small group sessions used to accelerate children’s progress.• For homework, to consolidate the concepts taught in class. The different difficulty levels within
and across the pages can provide very effective differentiation, making the planning ofhomework very simple for teachers.
The number and range of practice pages in the hard copy book and the CD-ROM version mean that there are sufficient pages to cover use in all of the suggested aspects highlighted above.
Although the practice pages in the hard copy book and CD-ROM version are not designed as summative tools, they are based on the Year 6 expectations within the mathematics curriculum, and therefore can support teachers in making formative judgements about children’s progress towards those expectations. The standardised scores should be used in conjunction with ongoing teacher assessment.
In addition, the CD-ROM contains six standardised assessment tests, covering the range of arithmetic objectives and modelled on the Year 6 National Curriculum arithmetic tests.
