Primary @ Reddam
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
If last week was to be remembered by the pace at which we began the term, this week is the week we will remember as the week our Year 6 students officially became the leaders of our school. Wednesday night’s special leadership induction evening saw our
Adelaide Hall filled with occasion as the student councillors, senators and house cap-tains were inducted into their roles. While every year 6 will have an opportunity to lead within their chosen leadership portfolio, I would like to congratulate the Senators and House Captains who were elected by their peers to lead the various portfolios and hous-es. Congratulations to our Senators: Zachary Ahrens, Isabella Devine, Jack Futcher, Dov Gellert, Rosa Gordos, Jonathan Herz, Zeya Kuban, Daniel Maynard. Xiao Cao Neal, Jor-dan Rubinstein, Mia Seisun, Talia Shapiro, Ariane Varnava, Sofia Weidler and to our House and Vice House Captains: Bondi, House Captain Grant Stein and Vice captains Francesca Nicklin and Zeya Kuban, Bronte, House captain Brooklyn Berry and Vice Captains, Mila Karpes and Jordan Rubinstein, Coogee, House captain Talia Shapiro and Vice captains Frederika Schneideman and Harry Nunn-Price. I am looking forward to seeing the Year 6 leaders working actively as role models within our school.
I am thrilled to bring you some outstanding news of sporting achievement so early in the year. Firstly, congratulations to Raghav Sundararaman (Year 6) who competed in the ASISSA Tennis trials on Tuesday at Snape Park and won all of his matches. As a result of his outstanding performance, he has been selected to take part in the ASISSA team which will compete at the CIS trials later in the month.
Our congratulations are also extended to Daniel Kelly (Year 5) and Grant Stein (Year 6) who took part in the ASISSA Basketball trials on Wednesday and who both performed excellently. The results will soon be in and we are hopeful that both boys will make the ASISSA team.
Frankie Nicklin (Year 6) is one of our very talented and committed basketball players and her dedication to the sport has really paid off. She has been selected in the girls ASISSA Basketball team which is terrific and I wish her the best of luck at the CIS trials which take place later this month.
On the Reddam sport teams’ front, I commend the Primary Water Polo teams which
played their first games at the weekend. The results were mixed, however the sportsman-ship was superior in victory and defeat which is wonderful. I look forward to going to see our water polo players in action during the season.
The co curricular programme has commenced in full, with most enrichments and acad-emies before school being well attended. It is good to see so many students making the most of the opportunity to take part in a diverse range of activities. From tap dancing to chess, computer coding to cartooning, the school is abuzz with activity.

Music Evenings
At Reddam, we try to make every child feel special on their birthday by announcing their
birthday in assembly and by allowing students to wear mufti clothes on their special day. As
our school has grown, and it is not always possible for families to host birthday parties which
include all students in the year, I respectfully ask that birthday party invitations are not hand-
ed out at school. We have had some very sad students who felt left out recently. Thank you
for your understanding and support in this regard.
On Wednesday, 17 February, all students in Year 3 to 6 will take part in a Body Confidence
Workshop. The aim of these workshops is to build resilience in children through understanding
different body types, educate children about how the media distorts images making them
unattainable, and develop confidence in what our own bodies can do. The PDHPE depart-
ment addresses these issues and this incursion will enrich students’ understanding of this cru-
cial element of health and development.
Next week, we will be hosting two Parent Information Evenings for Year 3 &4 parents on Mon-
day and Year 6 parents on Wednesday. These evening offer a good opportunity for parents
to meet the teachers and glean an overview of what the year ahead will focus on for your
child. It is also a great way for new parents to integrate. These information evenings com-
mence at 7pm and run for about one hour.
This weekend, Frederika Schneideman, Brooklyn Berry and Siena Donato (Year 6) will be tak-
ing part in the Oztag State Championships which are being held this weekend in Coffs Har-
bour. These three talented players are sure to be instrumental to their teams and we wish
then good luck for the Championship.
I wish the sports teams playing games this weekend good luck and I wish all families a won-
derful weekend of sun and shine.

SPORT FIXTURES
The Kindergarten classrooms are a hive of activity at the moment. After a wonderfully calm
and settled start, we are now getting down to the real hard work. The children have thor-
oughly enjoyed having their first lessons with all their specialist teachers this week.
We have been very busy learning all our single sounds; we have learned 5 sounds already
and are looking forward to putting them together to form our first words. Every morning we
practise our letter formations on the whiteboards and use our playdough to help strengthen
our fingers for writing. For the letter ‘S’ this week we made slithery snakes, which swirl happily
in our classrooms. Our number writing is coming along too, as we practise each morning on
the whiteboards whilst singing along to our numeral song.
Our topic this term is “Marvellous Me”. We have had great fun looking at all our baby photos
and trying to guess who each one was. There were many funny stories as they recounted
things they did as babies.

KINDERGARTEN
Year 1 students have been engaged in sensory overloaded activities this week. We took our
senses on a walk around the school to discover things we can smell, taste, hear, see and feel.
We have also enjoyed hearing all about each other and our families in our "All About Me"
news activities, as part of our History / Geography unit, 'Identifying Us'.

YEAR 1
In Science, Year 2 students have been investigating how sound waves travel. They have
identified verbal and non-verbal forms of communication. The students enjoyed conducting
experiments to discover which materials are the best sound conductors.
Year 2 are discovering a range of media that can be used for communication. They have
looked at newspapers and photographs past and present and compared how technolo-
gy has impacted the ways in which we communicate.
This week the students have discovered the difficulties visually impaired people encounter.
They have enjoyed learning about the early life of Louis Braille. We are really looking forward
to our experience at the NSW Schoolhouse Museum next week.
YEAR 2
The Year 3 students have had yet another fun and exciting week in the classroom. In Maths,
the students have been exploring symmetry and symmetrical patterns. They began their
week by identifying lines of symmetry in shapes, pictures and everyday objects before at-
tempting to create their own symmetrical pictures and patterns. The Year 3 teachers were
absolutely wowed by the high quality of work completed by the students, who produced
some stunning symmetrical designs. They also loved the energy and enthusiasm that the stu-
dents displayed. Well done Year 3!

This week in History, students have been learning about life in England in the late 18th century.
The children learnt about how the high rates of poverty and crime led to overcrowded pris-
ons. A compare and contrast activity highlighted the key differences of life in the 1780s and
in 2016. iPad research provided students with facts about the First Fleet journey and how a
new British colony was established in New Holland. Students gained an appreciation of how
much easier their life is compared to that of the convicts. Next week will focus on the impact
of the new colony on the Australian Aboriginals.
YEAR 4
Stage 1 Robotics Club has been in full swing this week with Mr Stone leading Year 1 and Mrs
Muirhead taking Year 2 lessons.
Students began their constructions, some making drumming monkeys, snapping crocodiles,
kicking giants, spinning top and an aeroplane.
WEDO Lego Robotics encourages teamwork building, creative and critical thinking skills, and
fine motor skill development.
All students will be invited to participate in Robotics within the year.

ROBOTICS
Year 2 have been learning how to
keep in time while saying a rhyme.
They learnt how to say the words, clap
the rhythm and add actions. Year 2
did so well at this task that they then
changed the words of the rhyme so
that each rhyme became individual.
Here is one for you to try at home.

All PIP Ensembles have begun this week. Please assist your child in arriving at 7.50am for a
prompt 8am start. All Instruments must be stored for the day, in our instrument storage area
on the Ground Floor and then taken home that afternoon.

This week, the Year 5s have been investigating Rights
and Responsibilities in English in preparation for their nov-
el study of 'Parvana', the story of a young girl living in Af-
ghanistan under Taliban rule.
After an in depth discussion about rights, the students
identified the right they feel is the most important right
they have living in Australia. Students identified the right
to education, the right to be treated equally, the right to
healthcare and the right to shelter as important. Students
then elaborated with explaining the responsibilities that
accompany these rights.
It was inspiring to see the very mature views that these young minds have of the world in
which we live.

YEAR 5 EXTENSION ENGLISH
In Year 6 Extension English lessons this week, the class has been looking
at multiculturalism and in particular, how multicultural Australia is nowadays. Understanding
culture and the challenges that face a country to ensure that all cultures are respected and
treated equally, the students have begun by investigating how much their class is repre-
sentative of Australia as a whole. In class, they conducted an interactive investigation and
were all surprised to see how many students have dual citizenship. We also noted that we
have some first generation Australians in our class, as well as some children whose ancestors
travelled to Australia as stowaways centuries ago. Next week, the students will commence
their novel study 'The Giver' by Lois Lowry in which a community wholly different from ours will
house the action of the book.
YEAR 6 EXTENSION ENGLISH
Welcome to another exciting year in the Reddam House library. This term, we have lots of
great activities happening.
First up, all primary school students will attend lessons every fortnight at the library. During
these lessons they will learn library and research skills, there will be reading activities and the
chance to borrow books to take home.
The Scholastic Book Club will be held every term, as usual, with lots of fantastic and afforda-
ble new books. Also, our yearly Scholastic Book Fair will run during week 7. The theme for this
year is MONSTER BOOK FAIR!
Last, but not least, years 3 - 6 are welcome to take part in the Premier’s Reading Challenge
which commences in March. There will be more information about the challenge to follow.
