Vocal Effects

Phonemes from the International Phonetic Alphabet are used in place of actual words.List of phonemes is on Page 3. Phonemes are notated as diamondnoteheads in the score.

Multiple vocal effects in the score that are not phonemes are notated with Pyramidnoteheads. These effects include laughing, whispering, humming, growling, etc.

Non-vocal effects are notated with X shaped noteheads. These effects include snapping fingers, clapping, stomping the feet, etc.

(List of Vocal/Non-vocal effects and corresponding abbreviations are on Page 4.)

A single line staff is used for the vocal part. Noteheads appear on, above and belowthe staff, however, the performer is by no means required to strictly adhere to thepositions of the noteheads. This was done primarily for visual effect.

Feathered-Beaming

All feathered beams in the score equal the value of a quarter note unless notatedotherwise.

Mallets, Sticks, Bows

The same Mallets are to be used on all instruments throughout the entire piece.Drum Sticks are notated in the score when the switch needs to be made from Mallets.2 Cello or Bass bows are needed for the middle section of the piece, which is notated in the score. The performer will bow the vibraphone and marimba simultaneously.

List of Vocal/Non-vocal effects and corresponding abbreviations-

Hum- indeterminate pitch with mouth closed.

Clap- clap hands.

Stomp- stomp feet at loud dynamics, step at softer dynamics.

Growl- low pitched sound, similar to an angry dog.

Gibberish- indeterminate pitches, performer should sound like a crazy person mumblingto themself.

Whispered Gibberish- same as above, except much quieter.

Laughter- notated with "hahaha" in score. The performer should take great freedomwith exaggerating this effect. The more creepy the effect, the better.

Yell!- shout the corresponding phoneme.

Rub- rub hands together rapidly, as though the performer is trying to "warm up the hands."

Hand/mouth- performer will use either hand in front of the mouth to create a broken soundthat is notated as a feathered beam in the score. The performer should randomly select a pitch for the sound. The "pitch" should not be exact. As a matter of fact, the pitch should be fairly indeterminate and "harsh" in timbre.

Whispered- whisper the corresponding phoneme(s).

Loudly whispered- same as above, but more audible to the audience.

Tongue- click the tongue, loudly or softly according to the dynamics notated.

Snap- snap fingers.

Lip trill- flutter lips loudly

*Due to the nature of this piece, it would be performed and conveyed more accurately if the performer memorizes the piece before a performance.

**Starting in measure 97 through the end of the piece, the performer is to gradually walk off stage while simultaneously performing the notated sounds, etc. The steps taken while leaving the stage are notated in the score.

***The perfomer must wear a headset microphone throughout the duration of the piece so that the vocalizations can be heard.
