WELCOME to Glasgow for what is sure to be an incredible 11 days of fun and excitement for everyone involved. As well as the incredible sporting action happening around Scotland, the inaugural European Championships are also an excellent chance to showcase the very best of Scottish culture.

We’re delighted to be running an action-packed programme of cultural events alongside the Championships. This will capitalise on Scotland’s world-renowned reputation for creative excellence and will allow everyone to play their part in the fun.

Glasgow’s iconic George Square will form the beating heart of these celebrations with the action spreading to other sites right across the country.

2018 is also the Year of Young People in Scotland – the first of its kind in the world – which is dedicated to celebrating the amazing achievements and contributions that young people make to Scotland.

There are opportunities for young people to engage in sporting and cultural events throughout Glasgow 2018, showcasing their talents across this exciting programme of activity.

We welcome sharing these Championships with Berlin who are hosting the Athletics. We have strong ties with our German neighbours and these Championships are yet another chance to strengthen the cultural links that bind us in close friendship.

Fiona Hyslop Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs, Scottish Government

Welcome to Festival 2018

"With Festival 2018 we continue to build on Glasgow and Scotland’s international cultural reputation. In creating the programme we have worked side by side with local communities, artists and cultural organisations to bring their ideas and creative ambitions to the fore, delivering a large-scale spectacular event with a truly international and accessible programme."

GLASGOW’S status as a global sporting city is matched only by its reputation as a creative powerhouse and a home to extraordinary art, culture and entertainment.

Our city can boast rich, historic art and architecture alongside cutting-edge contemporary movements. Opera and ballet jostle for space on Glasgow’s many famous stages with the biggest names in music, theatre and comedy.

Our music heritage is renowned and we are proud to be a UNESCO City of Music, an accolade we have held for over a decade.

Glasgow is also a gateway to the rest of Scotland and Festival 2018 will put both our city and our whole country’s world-class creative contribution in the spotlight.

The programme you hold in your hands showcases everything from music, visual art, street art and dance to theatre, literature, digital art and comedy.

It has been shaped by our city and its people – and it is also the catalyst for a truly groundbreaking cultural partnership between Glasgow and our co-hosts Berlin that will highlight the vital and vibrant creative scenes in two great European cities.

Whether you call Glasgow home, or are visiting from near or far, there is something here for everyone.

1 Aug, Doors 16:00

£15/£7.50 + booking feeJoin us in the spectacular setting of George Square to welcome the 2018 European Championships and our friends from across Europe to the beating heart of the city.

A new era in sport gets underway with the start of an exciting new multi-sport event bringing together elite athletes in Athletics, Aquatics, Cycling, Golf, Gymnastics, Rowing and Triathlon.

The big stage programme features some of the most exciting names in Scottish music today.

Nina Nesbitt’s recent tracks ‘The Best You Had’ and ‘The Moments I’m Missing’ are a huge leap forward from her Top 15 debut album ‘Peroxide’. With her character-filled voice, the heartfelt, easily-relatable lyrics demonstrate a command of modernist pop and R&B-tinged sounds.

Winners of 2017 BBC Scots Trad Awards 'ALBUM OF THE YEAR' and Nominees 2018 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 'BEST GROUP', Elephant Sessions have exploded onto the indie folk scene with unparalleled effect; transcending boundaries and shaking the very foundations of expectation.

Sacred Paws, Glasgow/London duo, write instantly infectious songs, fitting perfectly between uplifting indie-pop and intricate post-punk.

Glasgow’s prodigious talent C Duncan released his critically-acclaimed second album ’The Midnight Sun’ last year. Recorded and produced entirely in his Glasgow flat, it blends electronic elements and sweeping synth sounds with his signature layered vocals and dreamy instrumentation.

Classic Brit and Global Award nominees, Infinitime Music and Young Scot Award winners, Scottish-Egyptian multi-instrumentalists The Ayoub Sisters are fast becoming the sound and faces of a truly exciting new generation of classical and crossover artists.

Featuring alongside a celebration of the European Championships sports and the people who have been part of the Glasgow 2018 journey.

Other highlights include performances by CREATE Voice Factory, Behind the Noise present Bowie, Pivot, Beats Per Minute, Bonnie and Her Splashmob, Nevis Ensemble and Mischief La Bas, all culminating in a spectacular fireworks display!

Jazz at Festival 2018in association with Glasgow Jazz Festival

18:00All the way from Turin are urban brass band Bandakadabra, playing everything from swing, rocksteady, Balkan, and reggae to drum & bass. In collaboration with the Italian Institute of Culture in Edinburgh.

Funky organ-driven movie soundtrack jazz led by guitarist Allan McKeown, The Dt6 mix funky chicken scratch guitar, soulful organ and Jazz horns. A nexus of James Brown, Ennio Morricone and Jimmy Smith.

Ali Affleck is equally at home with her beloved New Orleans trad Jazz and Blues as well as with more contemporary flavors, and with such distinct vocal styling she inevitably draws comparisons to the most memorable of Jazz divas such as Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee.

Glasgow’s own Fat-Suit are influenced by contemporary exponents of jazz, funk and fusion such as Snarky Puppy, Vulfpeck and GoGoPenguin are obvious influences, yet are already opening up fresh lines of enquiry. The approach may appear looser and more relaxed, but the aim is to entertain as much as it is to dazzle with technical ability!

Talisk

15:00Barely four years since their formation, Talisk have already stacked up several major awards for their pyrotechnic yet artfully woven sound - including Folk Band of the Year 2017 at the BBC Alba Scots Trad Music Awards, and a 2015 BBC Radio 2 Folk Award.

Mohsen Amini - the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards’ Musician of the Year 2018, Hayley Keenan and Graeme Armstrong meld concertina, fiddle and guitar seamlessly together, to produce a unique force that has taken them all over the UK, Europe, the USA, Canada and Australia.

Super Night ShotNational Theatre of Scotland and Gob Squad

9 Aug, 22:00, Age 18+Free but ticketedSuper Night Shot is a magical journey through the night-time streets of Glasgow. Full of surprises, the Glasgow public become co-stars in a movie that celebrates unplanned meetings with strangers and delights in the randomness of urban existence.

Both comical and moving, Super Night Shot attempts to elevate the banality of everyday life into the glamour and glitz of a big-screen blockbuster. Completely unpredictable, the result is an experience halfway between theatre and film, elevating the everyday into the epic and playing with your perceptions of the familiar. Anything can happen, and usually does.

The film begins exactly one hour before you come to watch it when the four performer/activists meet, arm themselves with their video cameras and start them simultaneously. Embarking on a “war on anonymity”, they set off into the night on an adventure where only one thing is certain: 60 minutes later they will meet again and present what they have filmed to the waiting audience.
