SEVILLASevilla is the artistic, cultural and financial capital of
southern Spain, formally the capital of Andalusia. It is a
big city - inhabited by more than 700 thousand people.
and the metropolitan area has almost 1. 5 million
inhabitants. Sevilla is the fourth largest city in the country.
Seville's history is long and rich. The Romans called the
city Hispalis . After the Roman province of Hispania
Baetica was conquered by the Vandals, then the
Visigoths, they invaded the area in the 8th century Moors.
Elements of these cultures have left a strong mark on the
cultural history of the city, especially the Al-Andalus
period. The current Sevilla originates from the Arabic city
name.
ALHAMBRAThe Alhambra is one of the greatest monuments of Andalusia and one of the most important traces of Arabian (Moorish) rule over the Iberian Peninsula. Every day this complex is visited by crowds of tourists who want to see this unique Moorish heritage with their own eyes. Today, the Alhambra is known primarily for the palace rooms of the Nasrid family rulers. However, we should remember that the name Alhambra refers to the entire fortified city. The complex also included palaces of other mighty and aristocracy, military barracks and military infrastructure, commercial areas, a university, mosques and an ordinary residential district (Medina).
SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA CATHEDRAL, SPAINThe construction of the cathedral began in
1075 under Alphonse VI and was sponsored by Bishop Diego Peláez. The work took place under the direction of Master Esteban on the remains of old churches built in the intention of the saint. It was built with three aisles and a floor plan in the Latin cross and had an area of about 8300 m². Its countless extensions have added many architectural styles to the building (Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, Plateau and Neoclassical). The portico of La Gloria is the main entrance, and was created by master Mateo in 1188. It presents 200 characters referring to the Apocalypse and the figure of St. John of God. The Church is the first to see St. James, the apostle, who seems to greet the pilgrims, supported by a column rising from the muntineter. The facade of Obradoiro Cathedral is the work of Fernando de Casas y Novoa, and is considered one of the highest expressions of Spanish Baroque. The main altar is also in Baroque style and the crypt of the Apostle James lies directly below
MERIDA
Mérida is located in the western part of the
New Castile Highlands, at an average altitude
of 217 metres above sea level. The river
Guadiana flows through the city from the
southeast to the northwest, which divides it into
two parts, the larger of which, together with the
historic centre, is located on the right. The
Albarregas stream flows into Guadiana on the
border of the historic centre.
