Prevent Falls Falls are the leading cause of non-fatal injuries for children ages 0 to 19. Every day, about 8,000 children are treated in U.S. emergency rooms for fall- related injuries. Almost 86,000 fall injuries each year are linked with dogs and cats. This includes falling or tripping over the animal or its toys and/or being pulled down or pushed by a dog. One out of 3 people age 65 and older takes a bad fall every year. And in this age group, falls are the leading cause of death by injury. To stay independent and lower the risk of falls, seniors should: – Do regular weight-bearing exercises, such as walking. – Do exercises to increase balance. Examples are yoga and tai chi. – Do exercises that strengthen muscles. Examples are using a stretch band and lifting weights. – Get enough calcium and vitamin D through foods and supplements, as advised by their doctors. – Get tested for osteoporosis. Follow treatment, if prescribed. © American Institute for Preventive Medicine. All rights reserved. www.HealthyLife.com
