New Alfa Laval S-separator offersgreater efficiency and robustness
Al fa Laval has announced the arrival of a new version of the well-known S-separator. Inaddition to a range of key features that make it more robust, the new S-separator o ffersgreater efficiency that allows the same amount of oil to be handled with a smaller separator.
Alfa Laval’s new S-separator is a highly anticipated update of one of the company’s flagshipmarine products. In the years since its introduction, the S-separator has set the standard for engine protection and separation efficiency, particularly in working with demanding residualfuel oils.
The new and improved S-separator provides even greater separation efficiency, not least dueto a major increase in separation area. In addition, it features stronger discs and a more robustdrive system, which combine with existing advantages to create the lowest possible lifecyclecost.
Big advances in a small space
The increased efficiency of the new S-separator is the result of smart enhancements in theseparator disc stack. Increased separation area, disc modifications and other improvementsallow up to 20% more flow with retained separation performance. Since these changes do notaffect the separator’s small footprint, ship operators can now handle the same amount of oilwith a smaller separator.
Additional changes can be found in the S-separator drive, including sturdier friction blocks, amore resilient bearing system and a more powerful lubrication system. Together, thesemodifications further boost the S-separator’s high reliability.
Proven features and lowest lifecycle cost
Despite the many changes in the new S-separator, there is also much that remains the same.This includes the wear-reducing CentriLock snap ring and CentriShoot discharge system, aswell as the S-separator’s unique Alcap function, which automatically detects and adjusts to thenature of the oil.

Modular and flexible supply
Like its predecessor, the new S-separator also features the modular EPC 60 controller and ispart of Alfa Laval’s S and P Flex delivery concept, now available worldwide. For shipyards, thismeans an easily configured control system with Ethernet and bus communication, plus aflexible scope of supply based on block components or custom-built modules.
“The EPC 60 controller is as easy for shipyards to install as it is for ship operators to use,”says Joakim Thölin. “And thanks to the S and P Flex concept, shipyards can combine theindustry’s leading separator with a supply solution that matches their needs and engine roomlayout.”
