The Public Opinion

of Ronald Reagan

The public opinion of all

presidents will fluctuate

throughout their term of

office. Although ex-

president Ronald Reagan

entered office on a “high

note” he still managed to

keep his average job

approval rating above

50%. Here are the

averages for Ronald

Reagan’s two term role as

president of the United

States.

As you can see Ronald

Reagan entered

presidency at a high

percentage. This was

most likely due to his

previous career as a film

star and his ability to

speak publicly as well as

he did. Moving back to

his movie career, Ronald

Reagan performed in

many popular movie.

Thus the people already

liked him before he ran for

office. This pre-approval

gave Reagan a boost in

votes in 1981, where he

would win the election by

a landslide.

In his first year of

presidency he remained

popular among the people

until 1983 when his

popularity dropped to an

all-time personal low,

38%. This drop was due to

the economy running a

little sour after 25

republicans lost their seats

in the house. However,

Reagan would win back

the crowd in 1984,

bringing his approval

rating back up to an

average of 45%. Just in

time for his second

election Reagan returned

to his proper popularity.

In his final years as

president he continued to

be loved by the people of

America. His Reaganomic

plan worked and he got

the country moving again.

He created 20 million jobs

and the unemployment

rate dropped from 7.6% to

5.5%. Inflation also

dropped from 13.5% in

1980 to 4.1% by 1989.

Finally the net worth of

families earning between

20,000 and 50,000

annually grew by 27%.

Some consider him to be

one of the greatest

American presidents ever

to live. Although he had

his ups and downs he will

always be a magnificent

president.

Ronald Reagan’s Domestic Policy

Since Ronald Reagan’s final

term has ended American

citizens can all reflect on

how his domestic policy

changed the United States.

The Ronald Reagan

Administration made all of

the domestic policy choices

during Ranalds presidency.

The Ronald Reagan

Administration consisted of

him,his most trusted friends,

and highly recommended

politicians. He did a lot to

help the United States in his

eight years in office.

One of the things Reagan

did was changing the

government so it could help

the people more. He

believed that the

government should work for

the people instead of the

people working for the

government.”work with us,

not over us; to stand byour

side, not ride on our back."-

Ronald Reagan. He also

believed the people where

his boss because they

“hired” him by electing him.

Ronald increased the

efficiency of the Federal

Bureaucracy. Currently you

can get a Social Security

card or a passport in just 10

days because of him.

A main focus of the Ronald

Reagan Administration was

the economy.

“Reaganomics" consists of

budget cuts, unrestricted

free activity and tax

reduction to help the

Economy.

He also cut government

programs that he deemed

unnecessary spending.

Ronald Reagan liked to

maintain justice and safety

.Under his presidency he

created the first unit of the

Department of Justice to try

criminal polluters for there

crimes against nature. In

1984 the President's

Comprehensive Crime

Control Act was passed.

Thisact denied the use of

pleading insanity (so sane

people couldn't get off

easy), kept dangerous

criminals in jail , increased

penalties for drug dealers

and other crimes. There was

almost 2 million less houses

hit by crime at the end of his

second term then the year he

was elected.

Ronald was pro civil rights.

He was against racism. He

was the first president to

ever appoint a woman to be

a Supreme Court Justice,

shattering peoples views of

women roles in society.

President Reagan was the

first president to address

HIV and AIDS. Billions of

dollars were spent trying to

find a cure. “What our

citizens must know is this:

America faces a disease that

is fatal and spreading. And

this calls for urgency, not

panic. It calls for

compassion, not blame. And

it calls for understanding,

not ignorance. It’s also

important that America not

reject those who have the

disease, but care for them

with dignity and kindness.”

President Reagan Domestic

policy helped the U.S in

millions of ways and set the

states into a path for a bigger

brighter future with less

problems.

Ronald Reagan’s

Foreign Policy

Ronald Reagan, one of the

most loved presidents the

U.S. has seen. Reagan's

foreign policy has really

stood out in American

citizens minds. From tearing

down the Berlin wall to a

war on terror.

There is no doubt that

tearing down the wall was

what Reagan was known

for. Twenty eight years the

wall stood, separating

families and friendship in

Germany. Reagan's famous

words, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear

down this wall!", will ring

through the halls of history

for many many years.

Reagan's fight against

communism did not end

here.

Reagan personally met with

Gorbachev to eliminate

intermediate range nuclear

missiles. This has and will

continue to affect the

possibility of nuclear war

positively.

During the Iraq-Iran conflict

Reagan kept oil flowing to

the US. In Asia Reagan gave

support to anti-communist

insurgencies. Reagan was

focused on making

American lives better than

any other country.

Lastly, Reagan declared war

on international terrorism

after the attacks on U.S.

soldiers in West Berlin

nightclubs. Reagan's

primary thought process

was to protect and save as

many American lives as he

could.

Failures Iran-Contra AffairThe Iran-Contra Affair was a political scandal that began as a hostage trade for weapons in Iran. The Reagan administration, it is unknown how much involvement Reagan himself had in the scandal, began to approve selling weapons to Iran in exchange for the release of hostages. This was done through an Israeli proxy and most ashamedly, some of the proceeds were given to the contras. The contras were anti-communist rebels in Nicaragua.

Robert Brooke Supreme Court Nomination

Robert Brooke was nominated by President Reagan in 1987 to be a supreme court justice. The public, and more importantly the Senate denied him this post.

The Failure in Lebanon

Reagan encouraged the insuficient invasion of Marines and Israeli forces into Lebanon where they failed and became a political scandal.

Successes Ended the Cold War.

Reagan reversed the policy of “Detenté” which may have contributed to the fall of the communist block.

ReaganomicsReagan instituted deregulations, increased domestic spending, tax-cuts and created 16 million jobs. On the misery index, from inflation and unemployment, Reagan began at 20% and decreased to 10%

Nuclear Weapons Cuts

Reagan disposed of thousands of nuclear weapons with Gorbachev and helped to make the world a safer place.
