Organising Your Events at the Academy

Dear Fellows and colleagues,

Hong Kong has witnessed much social unrest this summer. Despite the current challenging situation, I believe each of you will remain professional and work together to protect the health of Hong Kong. It is our most important mission to ensure quality healthcare is delivered and patient safety is assured. As always, the Academy has been working hard to maintain high standards of specialist training through promoting knowledge exchange and developing collaboration.

First, publishing medical journals is one of the effective ways to facilitate medical research and knowledge sharing. Thanks to the efforts of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Press, I am glad that the Hong Kong Medical Journal (HKMJ) has achieved great improvements over the past year. The 2018 Journal Impact Factor of the HKMJ has grown to 1.588 from 1.226 in 2017. We have also seen a substantial increase of 18% in the proportion of articles that involved international collaboration from 2016 to 2018. I hope you will continue to support HKMJ in the future.

Second, establishing collaboration with medical authorities and organisations outside Hong Kong not only strengthens our unique position in promoting postgraduate medical training, but also fosters synergy that helps enhance the overall standard of specialists and quality of healthcare services. Regarding our work in the Greater Bay Area, I would like to report two important events that have taken place in recent months. Minor changes are in Section 10, in which the new Guidelines reflect the new requirement from Medical Council of Hong Kong for the Academy to provide information on CME/CPD of all Fellows after the end of cycle (instead of providing the information on those non-compliance cases only in the past).

Fellows can download the new guidelines from the website or using the QR code:https://www.hkam.org.hk/news/list/201908/HKAM%20CME-CPD%20Guideline%202020-22.pdf

The proportion of articles that involved international collaboration increased from 1.3% in 2016 to 19.3% in 2018, reflecting an increase in high-quality international submissions and the growing appeal of HKMJ beyond Hong Kong.

The Editor-in-Chief of HKMJ and Editor of the Academy Prof Martin Wong would like to express sincere gratitude to the Editorial Board members, International Advisers, reviewers, and editorial office staff, who have dedicated their time and effort to producing the HKMJ over the past year. Most of all, the Academy wishes to send appreciation to Fellows and other authors who have provided support by submitting their articles to the HKMJ, and without whom the HKMJ would not be able to thrive as it has.

Since 1995, the HKMJ has been serving readers by publishing high-quality original research and review articles reflecting the current practice in the science and art of medicine and public health in Hong Kong. The HKMJ looks forward to the submissions and unwavering support from Fellows, to continue growing and improving the HKMJ in the future.
