Treasurer’s Report

Last year was a busy year for the Treasurer, with total income of $111,465 and total expenses of $113,056. We finished the year with total funds of $30,815, compared with $32,406 at the start of the year. Membership We signed up 37 new members during the year, compared with 23 in the previous year. Total membership increased from 240 to 250. Income from membership subscriptions and joining fees was $13,594, compared with $13,034 in 2012. Member Events Net revenue from member events ($12,657) was down slightly compared with 2012 ($13,552). The most popular events continued to be the Tuesday morning workshops ($8,358), Tuesday evening workshop ($1,290), Saturday demon-strations ($979) and Forum meetings ($443 for 1

st Wednes-

day evening and $423 for 3rd

Saturday morning). The Neil Turner demo in October returned a small net revenue of $114. Exhibitions Net revenue of $6,497 from the two Exhibitions at Mount Coot-tha

was up slightly compared with 2012 ($6,137), with the lost income from free entry in November being compensated for by increased sales of raffle tickets and woodturning. The Timber and Working with Wood Show made a small profit ($94), similar to the previous year. Fundraising The Bunnings Sausage Sizzle in February raised net revenue of $1,475, which was donated to the Queensland Floods Appeal. The major raffle in second half of the year successfully raised $4,115. Our thanks go to the many sponsors of the raffle, who generously donated a range of prizes. The money will be used for replacement of the roof over the old section of the building in the coming months (approximately $5000). Property and equipment Major building improvements in 2013 were the construction of the rear stairs ($20,000, funded by a grant from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund) and the installation of ceiling fans in the Auditorium ($1848, funded by a grant from the Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Fund).

Major equipment items purchased during 2013 were the automatic external defibrillator ($3245), CCTV cameras and controls ($5,566), Stihl chainsaw ($1,125), Makita cordless drill set ($349), new refrigerator ($1,197) and freezer ($366). Total expenditure on equipment in 2013 was $15,694, with a further $2,274 being spent on equipment repairs and maintenance. Conclusion Highlights of the year have included building improvements and investment in new and replacement equipment, and the award of Queensland government and Brisbane City Council grants to fund the building improvements. A healthy bank balance remained at the end of the year, and WSQ is well placed for further improvements in facilities and activities in the year ahead. The financial records for 2013 are currently with the auditor, and a complete Financial Statement for 2013 will be published in the March newsletter as well as being presented at the AGM on 15 March. Letters to the Editor

9 January 2014 Dear Rob and members of the Woodturners Society Sorry about the delay in returning these DVDs. They were actually buried below some stuff we had brought home from Dad’s house as we were settling the estate. We have a large amount of Dad’s turning spread amongst family members across

Australia. It starts discussions with visitors at our house as it is proudly displayed where you have to walk past it to come into the house. We know that turning and your society played a large part of his later life. Thanks to you and your club members for your support and friendship during his long membership with the society and particularly towards the end of his life.

Kind Regards Mark Bates Doug Bates’ Son ***** I have some large pieces/logs of Mango tree ready to take away at Wavell Heights, if anyone is interested. Please contact me on 0421212563. Stephen Williams WSQ Member

DVA News

Raffle Once again we were able to give Karen a large number of turned articles for the annual raffle which was drawn on 18 December 2013. The 5 prizes were beautifully presented by Karen. Each prize was wrapped in cellophane, and was displayed inside the main entrance to the KPU. Karen presented us with the proceeds, amounting to $550. Thank you Karen. Another big thank you to all members who made and donated the prizes. Four of the team members were responsible for the turning of the prizes, starting early in the year. Members of the team meet every first and third Thursday mornings each month. Those who are not engaged in other club work such as preparation of timber, repairs, and maintenance turn articles for the prizes. In a previous year we turned 120 pencils for a club order. A nice $1,200 for the club. Other society members who donated top prizes were Bob Bain, Jeff Haylock, Brian Creese, Greg Fletcher, John Francis, and Richard Pacey (Pens). Thanks again to these

members. Their donations were greatly appreciated. Also, remember, we supply the timber to anyone who would like to help. DVA Veterans Over the past 10 years we have met, worked with, and got to know some wonderful people. We now feel a little bit closer to understanding some of the problems that they suffer. They appreciate the help that we can give them by, as Karen writes, “participating in a practical and therapeutic activity that supports their mental health needs”. These Vets deserve all the help they can get. We welcome anyone from the unit with open arms and the team members are only too willing to help them on a one on one basis. The idea is to get them to do as much of the work as possible. We also have a few members who still visit the unit for specialists” appointments, so we also give them extra time to help them through. For the information of newer WSQ members, the Tuesday afternoon session is a closed session – for DVA members only.

On behalf of the team, I would like to thank Karen and Helen for the work that they do – Karen for organising everything at the KPU, and Helen for bringing the Vets to us and caring for their wellbeing, and ours to. They are two wonderful ladies. Recently eleven WSQ members were involved in a cutting day on the DVA timber heap. They worked all morning chain sawing, carrying timber upstairs to the band saws, then bringing the blanks down again to be end grain sealed and stacked in the steel racks (made by Reg and Mike) ready to be sorted and named. This timber is not for the use of WSQ members. Members involved in the day were Bob McGeechan, Paul Tierney, Reg Weber, Bob Kennedy, Alwyn Clark, Alan Loxton, Mike Dodson, Lyndon Prescott (band saw), Jim Buxton (band saw), and Yung-nan Tung and myself (end grain sealing). Thank you for a job well done. Finally, we wish you all happy, safe and relaxed turning, and hope that this year is kind to all your wishes. Tom Rowston DVA Co-ordinator Life Member

The latest monthly raffle was drawn at the demonstration on Saturday 25 January. The winner of 2 excellent pieces of timber is Elaine Jonsberg. Geoff Holbeck Editor – Turning Talk

Demonstration – “Lamp Making”

On Saturday morning 25 January 2014 just over 20 members attended a demonstration on “Lamp Making” conducted by Rob McKee. Rob distributed drawings of the lamp design he would be making during the session. The blank that would become the lamp column was mostly red cedar with thin sections of ash and walnut glued on 2 sides to enlarge it to 70 mm square. It was just over 300 mm long. The blank for the base was 2 pieces of Tasmanian Oak glued together. It was 45 mm thick and 245 mm in diameter. Rob mounted the column blank between centres and turned it to round with the lathe running at about 1500/1800 rpm. He cut small dovetail spigots at both ends to allow subsequent mounting in a scroll chuck.

Rob Turning the Column

He fitted a scroll chuck in the headstock, mounted the blank in it, and brought tailstock up for maximum support. He cut a 13 mm diameter ring at the tailstock end. He fitted a hollow cup live centre to the tailstock so that the front edge of the centre fitted into the ring cut earlier. Rob reduced the lathe speed to about 400/500 rpm. He then carefully started

feeding a long auger/ boring bar through the tailstock centre. The auger was gently pushed in about 25 mm and then withdrawn to clear the waste. This process was repeated until a hole had been drilled half the length of the blank. The blank was reversed and the process described above was repeated. The drilled holes met in the middle, creating a clear hole to accommodate the electrical cable which would be fitted later.

Rob Drilling the Hole

The column blank was remounted between centres as before. Rob marked the design on the blank as per the plan. He used calipers and a parting tool to set the key depths. Rob advised that he preferred do the tight shaping first, and then the connecting sections. He finished shaping the column. The sanding and finishing were not undertaken as part of this demonstration.

The Completed Column

Rob mounted a face plate on the base blank and trued the edge and face. This is to be the bottom of the base. He removed it from the lathe, screwed a small flat, round piece of scrap timber to the face just turned, and screwed a face plate to the scrap timber. He mounted this on the lathe and then proceeded to remove waste and shape the top of the base blank. Once the desired shape had been achieved, a 30 mm deep hole to fit the spigot on the bottom of the column was drilled using a suitable Forstner bit in a drill chuck mounted in the tailstock. The sanding and finishing were not undertaken as part of this demonstration.

The Completed Base

It was a very interesting demonstration, and I’m sure everyone who attended learnt some new techniques, and left thinking “that didn’t look too hard, maybe I’ll have a go at making a lamp”. Thanks Rob for conducting another very informative demonstration. Geoff Holbeck Editor – Turning Talk
