PARENT/TEACHER/STUDENT CONFERENCES
Prep to Year 6 - Week 8, Term 1, Monday 17th
& Tuesday 18th
March, 2014
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Parent/Teacher/Student conferences will be held for all Prep to Year 6 classes on Monday 17th and
Tuesday 18th March.
The focus of the conference is for your child/ren to share their work and discuss how they are going with achieving their ‘Learning Goals’. Teachers will discuss the learning and progress of your child and strategies, to either extend their learning, or provide additional support.
To book a time for your child’s P/T/S Conference, go online www.schoolinterviews.com.au. Follow the step-by-step process, using the Event Code 2HZZC. At the end of the ‘booking,’ confirmation is sent to your email address. Online bookings have opened and will close on Friday 14
th at 4.00pm.
Please remember, that once a time has been booked, the options for parents are reduced, so, be prompt to select your time. If all conference times are booked, please contact your child’s teacher to make an alternative time.
If your appointment is during the school day, you will also be informed where you can collect your child from and then proceed to their classroom to meet with their teacher.
The P/T/S Conference days are as follows:
Monday 17th
March 3.00pm to 3.30pm, Assembly in the Gym
3.30pm to 6.00pm – All classes
4.00pm to 6.00pm – Specialist Teachers
Tuesday 18th
March 3.00pm to 3.30pm, All classes in the Gym
3.30pm to 6.00pm – All classes
4.00pm to 6.00pm – Specialist Teachers
If you would like to make an appointment with a Specialist teacher, (Felicity Minton - ICT, Sarah Nobbs - PE, Helen Atkins – Japanese, Dean Pearce – Performing Arts and Vicki Symons - Visual Arts) please select a time via the online booking system.
P/T/S conferences are highly effective in enhancing children’s motivation and understanding of their
learning. The length of each P/T/S Conference is “up to 10 minutes”.
Prior to the conferences, teachers and children will spend time discussing how to take part in a Parent/Teacher/Student Conference. We believe all parents and children will find the Conferences very informative and rewarding.
The Prep & Year 1 & 2 children will talk about their ‘Goals’ and achievements, as well as articulating their learning.
The Year 3 to 6 children will talk about their ‘Learning Goals’ and what they were aiming to achieve in the first half of the year, and how they progressed towards their goals, or what may have prevented them from achieving their goals.
If a parent or teacher requires time for a ‘one-on-one’ discussion, this can be factored in towards the end of the Conference, or an alternative time/date can be arranged.

Student Safety
Please take the time to regularly remind your child/ren about safety, especially when going to and from school. Here are the important points to mention:
Do not to talk to strangers and never accept a ride from a stranger, or accept lollies or gifts from a stranger.
Immediately report any issue or problem you may have when going to or from school, to your mum and dad, or to your teacher, the Principal, Assistant Principal or office staff.
Always get permission from mum or dad before going to play with a friend after school and always let mum and dad know where you will be and what time you will be home.
We advise that, wherever possible, children should travel to or from school with an adult or with their friends, rather than travel alone.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
Early Release
All children collected from school before 3.30pm must be signed out at the Office. Parents will be handed an ‘Early Release Pass’ to hand to the supervising teacher. If a child is signed out at Recess or Lunch time, the Office staff will call the child to the Office and then ensure the Early Release Pass is given to the supervising teacher.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
Bikes & Scooters
Many children ride bikes and scooters to school each day. All bikes and scooters must be locked up in either the Bike
or Scooter Enclosure to prevent theft. Please ensure your child has a chain and a lock. All children who ride a bike or
scooter must wear a helmet which is a requirement by the Government . The school regularly reminds all children
about wearing helmets for their safety. All bikes, scooters, skateboards, ribtics and helmets must be labelled, with your
child’s name and class. Children are reminded they must walk their bike, scooter, skateboard or ribstic to and
from the school gates. No bikes are to be brought through the school buildings and we request, where
possible, that Scooters are also not walked through the building.

Working With Children Checks As from the 1
st July 2013 the process for applying for a Working With Children Check has changed. Due to the
continual changes to the forms they are no longer available at School or the Post Office. The only way to apply for a Working With Children Check is online. These forms are available at http://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au Reminding Parents, if you wish to assist in the Canteen, Fresh Fruit Friday, Sport, Swimming, Excursions or Camps, you must have a current Working With Children Check. If you have a current WWCC and have not provided a copy to the office, please bring your WWCC to the school office, where a copy will be placed on file. Year 2M’s Photo Gallery
Last week, as part of “Show and Share”, Year 2M had a special visitor. Rosie, a 5 month old Shih Tzu
puppy, was introduced to the class by her owner Betsy. Sandra, Betsy’s mum, explained to the students
the interesting legend that surrounds the Shih Tzu breed.
It was a wonderful way to begin our Friday. The whole experience created a calm, rich and fun learning
environment.
Overall, Year 2M gave Rosie an for effort!
ART ROOM NEWS The Visual Arts program is in full swing. The children have all been very creative and energetically working hard. We have been very fortunate to have lots of new display boards along the main school corridor, and I hope to have every spare inch covered with the great work.
I would like to take this opportunity to invite parents in the school community to be an art room helper. If you have any skills that you would like to share with the students please email me. I am also looking for parent helpers who are able to mount work, display art, and assist with the daily running of an art room (Pencil sharpening, cutting up paper and fabrics etc), before school and after school.
I am keen to get a mosaic workshop happening in terms 2 and 3, and would be interested in getting local experts and contacts to assist me.
My email address is [email protected]
RECYCLING HOUSEHOLD ITEMS FOR THE ART ROOM
The Art room is a wonderful place to support sustainability.
The following items will be gratefully appreciated if you are having a clean-up – buttons, lace, wool, ribbon, fabrics, nice wrapping paper and magazines. I am unable to accept recycled food containers. I would like to thank Martin Ray (parent) who has been regularly bringing great items in. Any items can be dropped off before or after school to the art room – look for the donation box.

Taskworks Excursion Year 3L Reflections
On Thursday 27th February all the Year 3`s had an excursion to
Taskworks for our Inquiry Topic “Teamwork”. On the way there we
were on seat belted buses. It took a really long time to get there
probably one hour.
When we arrived we were sorted into groups to do all the activities.
My group started with Build-it-robots. We had to take apart the robot
and put it back together in a different way. Next was Create a Scene
where you can dress up as a monster, rock star, princess, knights
and more.
Next is Cable maze where you get a partner and run around this
maze with poles. You get timed how long it takes for you and your
partner to get out. My record was 16.9 seconds.
Next was my favourite which was stomp-a-stump. You stand in a
semi-circle with your partner and one faces one way and the other
faces the other way. Around you there are these green things on the
floor and you stomp on them as they bob up. You try to get the
highest possible score. My best score was 97.
Next was Peg fast and you have to put pegs in holes on a wall I
think it is but there are 2 different colour holes which are blue and
red. One team puts the black pegs in the red holes and the other
team puts the green pegs in the blue holes. You can only hold two
pegs at a time. When all the holes are filled with pegs you press the
red button at the end of the wall to stop your time.
Last but not least is the puzzle room. You can play with blocks, go
through a brick maze where you can only go forward and right.
There is a bicycle, a huge wall with the world map and you put the
magnetic country flags in the correct country.
After all of that we went back to school just in time to go home.
I learnt that teamwork is important because it can help a lot to
achieve your goal.
by Mark K
On Thursday 27th February I woke up really early and nervous about going on our brilliant excursion to Taskworks. I arrived and I saw
lots of games and mazes. I was nervous because I didn’t know how to play the games. The teachers put us into six. My favourite was
Cable maze because it was really hard to get through the maze and there was a timer. The other games were Stomp-a- Stump, Peg
Fast, Make a Scene, Build it and Puzzle Room.
I learnt teamwork helps you make friends and it is very important to work together and listen to each other.
By Riley 3L
I woke up really excited on Thursday 27th February. All the grade 3’s
were going on a excursion to Taskworks. When I came to school the
bell went BING BING BING! Then I ran to class. Dianna marked the
roll. Riley and I had to take about seven things to the office. YAAA!!! I
screamed “We are going on the shiny white bus”. I was sitting next to
Phillip.
When we arrived at Taskworks we all started to eat our snack and fruit.
Everybody then walked inside and it was amazing!. Everybody sat on
the floor because we needed to know what teams we were in. I was
with Phillip, Darcy, Seb, Edan, Chester and more.
The first activity I played was Peg Fast. To play Peg Fast you need a
bucket of pegs. In Peg Fast there are 2 teams the green team and the
red team. I was on the red team and we won every time not that
winning is important though.
Next we were playing Build it. It was where you had to work as a team
to build something out of blocks. My team built an awesome house.
Next my team went to Create a Scene. It was where you had to dress
up in costumes. I dressed up in a robber suit with a jacket gun and a
shield. Next I dressed up as a fat monster. I was STARVING TO
DEATH!
Luckily we then had lunch. I had a yummy sandwich. I was really
looking forward to going into the Cable Maze and next we did. I was
partners with Phillip. My record of how quick I could go in the maze was
16.6 seconds.
Last but not lest Stomp-a-stump. I was partners with Chester. In Stomp
-a-stump you need to stomp stumps with a partner. My record was 83.
Well that is it and instead of going on the bus I could just drive home
with my mum.
I learnt that Teamwork is great because people can help you in
different ways.
By Jack 3L
I woke up on Thursday morning and stayed in bed until I remembered about Taskworks. I was delighted that the day had finally come. I
dressed myself quickly, ate my breakfast, brushed my hair and brushed my teeth before leaving for school.
When we arrived at school all the year 3’s were buzzing with excitement and when the bell went they were all keen to get on the bus.
I sat at the back of the bus with Charlotte K, Charlotte and Sirena. I felt a bit sick. It took about 50 minutes on the bus and when we all
arrived at Taskworks the year 3’s and I were glad.
We sat on the grass outside for a little while to eat or fruit snack and snack. When everyone had finished eating we went inside, put our
bags down and then sat on the floor.
When we were on the floor we were introduced to some people and the six activities, before we were split into six groups. The only girls
in my group were Stella, Georgia, Alyna and I.
The first activity I went to was called Build-It where you had to try and rebuild a robot. The first robot was pretty easy doing it in a group,
but the second one was bigger and a little harder.
When we had finished at Build-It we went to an activity called Create a Scene. That is where you have four rooms to dress up in, One
room to dress up as rock star, another room to dress up as a future creature, another one to dress up as a princess, knight, king or
queen and the last room was to dress up as a monster. I dressed up as a princess with a blue and pink gown and stood in front of a
castle curtsying to get my picture taken and then Alyna, Georgia, Stella and I all dressed up as fat monsters to get our picture taken.
After that activity we went to Cable Mazes and that was one of the best in my opinion because you have a partner and your instructor
shows you through the maze 3 times and then you have try and run through it with your partner as fast as you can without getting lost.
After you have done I with your partner a few times you have to do it by yourself. My best score was 17 seconds.
Next was Stomp-a-Stump where you had to stand in a black semicircle and when these green things come up you had to try and stomp
on them while keeping the other foot in the semi-circle. It was FUN!
Now it was time for lunch. We went outside and I met up with some of my friends and ate lunch with them. By now everyone was quite
tired.
When we went back inside my group went to Peg Fast. You are only allowed to peg things into a coloured hole. My team had red holes
and had the score of 1 minute something. Another team I think had 58 seconds.
After Peg Fast we went to Puzzle Room. There was a maze that you had to try and get to a grey square by only turning right and going
straight. There was also wooden blocks you could 3 stories high and soft blocks you could build to any story you wanted. There was a
bicycle you had to try and get the hand to winner.
It was a long drive back to school and a lot of people were very tired. It had been a long and fun day and now it was nearly over.
I learnt on Thursday that teamwork is not only about speed, but communication, encouraging others, speaking calmly and
having fun.

Sustainability Festival
As part of the Sustainability Festival in Melbourne 2014, Eco Innovator Leyla Acarolgu ran a children’s
workshop on ‘Dissecting Electronic Waste’, such as computers and their peripherals. The aim was for children
to discover what was on the inside of computers, the difficulty with recycling computers and hence, why so
many of them are destined for the dump.
At OshClub we would like to replicate this activity as part of a broader theme of Sustainability in our After
School Care program. Once our investigators have dissected the computer parts we will use them to make
unique and innovative pieces of artwork.
We are asking for your assistance. Firstly, if you have any old computer parts at home which you would like to
donate to us. Secondly, if you would like to help us supervise the ‘dissection’ of the computer as it can be quite
a difficult task for little hands.
Please speak to Cassie or Leanne for more information, or email at oshclub.williamstownnorth.gmail.com
Details of Leyla Acarolgu’s work can be found at http://ecoinnovators.blogspot.com.au

Tee Ball As we enjoy celebrating our sporting achievements at Willi North I just wanted to share with you that on Saturday a number of our students participated in an Under 10s Tee Ball/Rookie ball tournament at Cheltenham representing the Newport Rams Baseball Club.
Rookie Ball is a modified version of baseball, the only difference between Tee Ball and Rookie Ball is that an adult (coach) will pitch to the batter, instead of the batter hitting off a tee. Rookie Ball introduces the players to the concept of hitting a moving ball.
The games provides a lot of fun, opportunity for rapid improvement in ball skills, hand-eye coordination and general confidence, as well as one hour of fast moving exciting involvement during the game itself.
Our team enthusiastically and energetically played a whopping 5 games over a very long day against clubs from all over Melbourne. Although the games are not officially scored, our kids should feel very proud of their batting and fielding achievements in addition to learning valuable skills in sportsmanship. The students who participated in the tournament are:
