Update on Building and Grounds Thanks to Mr. Sullivan who has once again helped with our sound system. He installed a night light that will indicate when the microphone is on. That’s a great help.

A+ Plumbing recently checked all our outdoor faucets – some weren’t working. The air condi-tioner apparently needed an outdoor water source to com-plete an inspection – that has been seen to.

And if you’ve been by lately, you may have noticed that the floors are looking great; they were rewaxed and buffed on June 6 and 7.

We finally had the trees on our property trimmed up. Paradise Tree Co. did the work and they did a very thorough job and removed all the trimmings. Looks great.

We’re working to improve our civic center and we’ve got more projects ongoing and planned.

***Sales space at our December Arts & Crafts Show sells out fast and we’re already taking reservations. There are

only 25 tables. Tables are $30 for non-members, $25 for members. We are only taking vendors whose work is origi-

nal, designed, created by the vendor; no used, or newly manufactured goods will be accepted. There will be food

sold at the event. If you want table space, it’s best to move fast as we’re already getting reservations from last year’s

vendors. Contact Linda at our office at 941- 493-0006 or [email protected]. If she’s not there, she’ll get

back to you. You can also contact organizer Gail Parker at 941-244-0814 at any time.

In June, we welcomed our new members with a Wine & Cheese reception.

Dan Hocken-smith of Wines for Hu-manity brought a va-riety of wines for tasting.

We’ll be do-ing this one again and hope you can join us next time.

look great. We also had the palm trees trimmed and main-tained.

I want to announce some great news and that is the return of the South Venice Garden Club, who will once again call the South Venice Civic Association home beginning in Sep-tember. The current president, Jean Goodrich and the oth-er great members have also volunteered to use their ex-pertise to improve the overall appearance of the plantings in front of the hall. So we welcome back the South Venice Garden Club and those of you who enjoyed the ‘Garden Club Clippings’ column in the WAVE in past years can now look forward to seeing it in future issues. We are also work-ing to make building improvements not just for our mem-bers but for the many groups and individuals who rent the SVCA. We hope to upgrade our electric and water heating systems and are seeking an investor to assist us with that initiative.

Another project we are considering is installing solar panels on the roof to help reduce our electrical costs – and serve as a good civic example! Please contact me directly if you have an interest in assisting with the research or financing of any of these projects.

Please keep in mind that, as a non—profit, we welcome and appreciate any and all donations –it could be cash, equip-ment, items (even cars!) that we can either put to use at the SVCA or raffle, sell at our yard sale or outright sell to supplement SVCA’s revenue and use that money for improve-ments to the build-ing and grounds.

We are also working to bring our mem-

bers some exciting events for the fall and winter and, as always, we welcome your ideas and suggestions for pro-grams, presentations or entertainment. See page XXX for a list of things already on the schedule.

Enjoy the remaining days of summer, and I look forward to seeing and talking to you soon. Be well!

SOUTH VENICE BOOK CLUB

What we’re reading From Gail Parker The club has taken the summer off— I hope everyone has been staying cool and enjoying the long days! Meetings resume in September—second Tuesday, September 10 at 4:00pm. We’ll meet at the Civic Association building and at that meeting, we’ll be discussing our current book, The Witch Elm, by Tara French. Afterward, we’ll decide the ti-tles for October—and perhaps November.

If you have been thinking about joining us, please do! New faces and new voices are always welcome! I look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to the club.

Captain’s Corner: By Capt. Randall Patterson

With the summer heat upon us, many people are looking to cool off with a swim at the beach. But this year, due to

increased awareness, if not increased frequency, there is concern about con-tamination in the water. News coverage of “flesh-eating” bacteria and sewage spills have folks worried about the safety of that cooling dip in the Gulf. The alarm is not without warrant. As I write this, there have been at least eight cases and two deaths attributed to the bacteria this

summer. Many have been here in Florida, but the Chesa-peake and Delaware Bays have also been affected.

There are several bacteria that can cause “necrotizing fasciitis,” the medical term for the flesh eating infection. It

comes on quickly, usually in a matter of hours to two days, and is fatal in nearly 10% of cases. The bacteria causing the trouble here in Florida is vibrio vulnificus, a common bacte-ria found in saltwater, but it occurs more frequently when the water is warm. It is usually contracted through eating raw shell fish, which is why you shouldn’t eat raw oysters in the summer months. In fact, far more people die from in-gesting it than from the skin infection. It affects the elderly and immunocompromised more.

In necrotizing fasciitis, the bacteria gets in through an open cut, wound, or sore and spreads from there. So if you have open cuts, don’t go in the water. Seek medical treatment at the earliest sign of infection. Time is of the essence.

There are other bacteria that can cause sickness present in our waters. There have been “No Swim” advisories posted recently due to enterococcus which is found in human and animal waste, and can lead to intestinal illness and skin rashes. The recent sewage spill on Grand Canal on Siesta Key is a good (or bad) example. The same rules apply to all bacteria outbreaks. Don’t swim in, or eat raw shell fish from, the contaminated area.

You can check on the status of bacteria at the Health De-partment’s website, ourgulfenvironment.net, or Mote Re-search Lab’s site, visitbeaches.org. The readings for Casper-sen and Manasota beaches will give you a pretty good idea of how our beach is doing.

And remember, you can still enjoy the beach without swim-ming. Just inform yourself and use good judgment before entering the water.

What’s happening at the Park Nature Center Hours: Shamrock Park is a great place to bring your kids for a bike ride, hike or a romp in the play-

ground. When the heat of summer hits, however, sometimes you need a break!

If you happen to be at the park when the nature center is open, please come in and enjoy the cool a/c while check-ing out our displays, artifacts, nature books and Kid’s Corner. The kids corner has toys, coloring pages, and books for your children to enjoy while escaping the heat. There are also two water

fountains located on the deck as well as restrooms. Simply sitting on the benches in the breezeway is an excellent way to cool off!

Thanks to some dedicated volunteers, the Shamrock Na-ture Center is open Fridays from 10:00am to 4:00pm and on Saturdays from 10:00am to 1:00pm.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for Sham-rock Park, please contact Teresa Good,

US 41 CONSTRUCTION

Here we go again! The road construction project on the US41 By-Pass be-tween Gulf Coast Boulevard and Center Road has been underway for a few months now.

The Transportation Department is widening the road from four to six lanes, creating a new drainage and storm water system, improving lighting on the road, and adding bike lanes and sidewalks.

Long time residents have seen this show a few times be-fore and know what to expect.

Nice as that may be when it’s done, expect some block-ages and delays while the work progresses. Bicyclists es-pecially should seek alternate routes.

Word is the project is on schedule and will be complete by spring of 2021. Fingers crossed.

State of the Market KELLEY ANN AYERS, Exit Realty Inventory is down! We have not had an update on the Market since May 15 and please note this is a double

period I am reporting on in this issue! Sixty-seven sales for this double period which is normal and in keeping

for this time of year. Of those, the highest was for $335K for a brand new home on Jamaica Road. Three

homes sold for over 300K, twenty-eight sold in the 200’s and one went under 100K, but it was very rough.

Thirty-five homes closed between $100,000 and $200,000. The average “sold price per square foot” was

$150.26 and the average sale price was $211,702 . . . almost no change from previous months and again

great news for homeowners of South Venice Beach! However, the big news is that there are currently only 86 Active listings at

the time of this article which is down a lot! The last report we had 128 Active Listings. Last report the number of Active listings

had gone down a little, but this is a significant inventory reduction! Sixty-five homes are currently Under Contract and waiting to

close, that is again a large number of Pending Sales for the neighborhood. With the inventory down and homes still selling at this

pace…well it is a very good time to put your home on the market! And do not forget summertime is when the serious buyers are

here! If you are thinking of selling Please call for a confidential free market analysis!
