29 TH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES (1921-1923) MASTER MASON 1920 He was Ohio’s lieutenant governor from 1904 to 1906 but lost his bid for the governorship in 1910. Two years later, he stepped into the national spotlight at the Republican National Convention when he gave a speech nominating President William Taft (1857-1930) for a second term. In 1914, Harding was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he remained until his 1921 presidential inauguration. The congenial Harding had an undistinguished career in the Senate. While he supported high protective tariffs and opposed President Woodrow Wilson’s (1856-1924) plan for the League of Nations, Harding was generally a conciliator and took few strong stands on any issues. At the 1920 Republican National Convention, delegates deadlocked over their choice for a presidential nominee and eventually chose Harding as a compromise candidate. Calvin Coolidge, the governor of Massachusetts, was selected as his vice presidential running mate. The Democrats named James Cox (1870-1957), the governor of Ohio, as their presidential candidate; Franklin Roosevelt (1882-1945), the former assistant secretary of the Navy (and future 32 ND U.S. president), was picked as his running mate. In the aftermath of World War I and the social changes of the Progressive Era, the pro-business Harding advocated a “return to normalcy.” He conducted a front-porch campaign from his home in Marion, and thousands of people travelled there to hear him speak. (Due to the high volume of visitors, Harding’s front lawn had to be replaced with gravel). In the general election, the Harding-Coolidge ticket defeated the Democrats in the largest landslide up to that time, capturing some 60 percent of the popular vote and an electoral margin of 404-127. It was the first presidential election in which women across the United States could vote, having gained the right with the ratification of the 19th Amendment in August 1920. In the summer of 1923, Warren Harding embarked on a cross-country tour of the United States to promote his policies. During the trip, the 57-year-old president became sick, and on August 2 ND he died of what was likely a heart attack (no autopsy was conducted) at a San Francisco hotel. In the early hours of August 3 RD Vice President Coolidge was sworn in as America’s 30 TH president at his boyhood home in Plymouth Notch, Vermont, where he was vacationing. Coolidge’s father, a notary public, administered the oath of office. Millions of people across the nation gathered along the railroad tracks to pay their respects to Harding as his body was returned from the West Coast to Washington, D.C. Harding’s Marion home was later designated a National Historic Landmark and opened to the public. The president’s tomb is also located in Marion. Warren Gamaliel Harding was born on November 2,1865, on a farm in the small Ohio community of Corsica (present-day Blooming Grove). He was the oldest of eight children of George Harding (1843-1928), a farmer who later became a doctor and part owner of a local newspaper, and Phoebe Dickerson Harding (1843-1910), a midwife. Entered Apprentice Lodge N 0 7O, Marion, Ohio, Jun 28, 1901, received no other degree until after becoming U.S. President, FC and Master Mason in Marion Lodge N 0 70 in 1920 (Master Mason Aug. 27, 1920), Royal Arch Chapter degrees in Marion Chapter N0 62 in 1921, Knight Templar in Marion Commandery N 0 36, in 1921 and Scottish Rite and Shrine in 1921. Harding graduated from Ohio Central College (now defunct) in 1882 and moved to Marion, Ohio, where he eventually found work as a newspaper reporter. In 1884, he and several partners purchased a small, struggling newspaper, the Marion Star. In 1891, Harding married Florence Kling De Wolfe (1860-1924), a Marion native with one son from a previous relationship. The Harding’s had no children. Warren Harding, a Republican, began his political career in 1898 by winning election to the Ohio Senate, where he served until 1903.

29TH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES (1921-1923) MASTER MASON 1920

He was Ohio’s lieutenant governor from 1904 to 1906 but lost his bid for the governorship in 1910. Two years later, he stepped into the

national spotlight at the Republican National Convention when he gave a speech nominating President William Taft (1857-1930) for a

second term. In 1914, Harding was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he remained until his 1921 presidential inauguration. The

congenial Harding had an undistinguished career in the Senate. While he supported high protective tariffs and opposed President

Woodrow Wilson’s (1856-1924) plan for the League of Nations, Harding was generally a conciliator and took few strong stands on any

issues. At the 1920 Republican National Convention, delegates deadlocked over their choice for a presidential nominee and eventually

chose Harding as a compromise candidate. Calvin Coolidge, the governor of Massachusetts, was selected as his vice presidential

running mate. The Democrats named James Cox (1870-1957), the governor of Ohio, as their presidential candidate; Franklin Roosevelt

(1882-1945), the former assistant secretary of the Navy (and future 32ND U.S. president), was picked as his running mate. In the

Brethren, I have been reading this very wonderful book these last few months and I’ve been

sharing with you some of the excerpts from it. I have found another one which I find to be

inspirational.

DECLARATION OF PRINCIPLES

“Freemasonry is a charitable, benevolent, educational and religious society. Its principles are

proclaimed as widely as men will hear. It’s only secrets are in its methods of recognition and of

symbolic instruction. It is charitable in that it is not organized for profit and none of its income

inures to the benefit of any individual, but all is devoted to the promotion of the welfare and

happiness of mankind. It is benevolent in that it teaches and exemplifies altruism as a duty. It

is educational in that it teaches by prescribed ceremonials, a system of morality and brotherhood based upon the sacred law. It is

religious in that it teaches monotheism, the volume of the sacred law is open upon its altars whenever a Lodge is in session,

reverence for God is ever present in its ceremonial, and to its brethren are constantly addressed lessons of morality; yet, it is not

sectarian or theological. It is a social organization only so far as it furnishes additional inducements that man may foregather in

numbers, thereby providing more material for its primary work of education, of worship, and of charity. Through the improvement

and strengthening of the character of the individual man, Freemasonry seeks to improve the community. Thus, it impresses upon

its members the principles of personal righteousness and human welfare, and inspires them with that feeling of charity, or good

will, towards all mankind which will move them to translate principles and convictions into action. To that end, it teaches and

stands for the worship of God; truth and justice; fraternity and philanthropy; and enlightenment and orderly liberty, civil, religious

and intellectual. It charges each of its members to be true and loyal to the government of the country to which he owes allegiance

and to be obedient to the law of any State in which he may be. It believes that the attainment of these objectives is best

accomplished by laying a broad basis of principle upon which men of every race, country, sect, and opinion may unite rather than

by setting up a restricted platform upon which only those of certain races, creeds, and opinions can assemble. Believing these

things, this grand Lodge affirms its continued adherence to that ancient and approved rule of Freemasonry which forbids the

discussion in Masonic meetings of creeds, politics, or other topics likely to excite personal animosities”

“It further affirms its conviction that it is not only contrary to the fundamental principles of Freemasonry, but dangerous to its unity,

strength, usefulness and welfare, for Masonic bodies to take action or attempt to exercise pressure or influence for or against any

legislation, or in any way to attempt to procure the election or appointment of government officials, or to influence them, whether

or not members of the fraternity, in the performance of their official duties. The true Freemason will act in civil life according to his

individual judgment and the dictates of his conscience.”

This was adopted at the 1939 grand Masters conference in Washington, DC.

Brethren,

March 5TH is the 1ST Annual Sun City Lodge N072 Meet and Greet Pot Luck, it is open to all

Masons of Sun City Lodge N072 and their families and friends, all Masonic bodies that meet at

Sun City Lodge N072 and their families and friends. This is also a great opportunity to bring

those who are wondering what the Masonic Orders are about. Sun City Lodge is going to furnish

the hot dogs and hamburgers. Since it is a pot luck, please bring a dish that will serve those that

you bring plus one or two. If you can’t bring a dish, please come anyway. This is a great

opportunity to meet all the Masonic Brothers and Sisters that meet in this wonderful Lodge. To

make sure we have enough burgers and dogs please RSVP to the Lodge phone number

623.972.2217 with your name and the number of guests you are bringing. We hope to make this a very successful event and

need your help in letting us know how many to expect. We do not want anyone to leave hungry. I believe that we are one big

Masonic Family and hope that everyone comes out for a good day of fun and fellowship. Our Junior Warden is probably shaking

in his boots about this point in my message, wondering what he is going to do to serve this many people, so please RSVP so he

doesn’t have a conniption fit.

Brethren, The first three brothers to get the answer to the Worshipful Master by email, phone call, text message or in person will

get free dinner and the next stated meeting.

This month’s question: What is the difference between a RED LODGE and BLUE LODGE ?

Brethren, at this time we have 220 members. We had one withdraw (Herbert Riell). We have two waiting for demits (Brian Turner and Robert Kinch). We have one waiting for the EA degree (Brian Arrowood) and three who have received the EA. We have one who received the third degree

(Edward Tannheimer). I think we are doing very well. Our average age is 71. Do good unto all.

Page 4: PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES (1921-1923) MASTER …suncitymasoniclodgeno72.com/wp-content/themes/masons360/library/... · Marion Lodge N0 70 in 1920 (Master Mason Aug. 27, 1920),

During the conclusion of a third degree last month, our newly obligated brother was

presented with a masonic ring handed down from a family member, and the subject was

brought up of THE PROPER WAY TO WEAR A MASONIC RING. Should the points of the

compass be toward or away from the body? Thus this article from Temple Topics: If you

were hanging an American flag, would you put the stars down? The same holds true of the

ring. Usually it is a gift and has sentimental value for the wearer. It should look right side up

to him. Rings are therefore worn with the points of the compass toward the wearer. This

subject is one on which Grand Lodges have made no regulation and popular opinion is

divided. We must, therefore, reason from analogy. When the emblem of the square and

compasses is displayed on a building, pennant, button etc. universal custom requires the points of the compass point downward.

When displayed on the Alter they point away from the Master. As the Master from his station views the compass from the Alter of

his lodge, the points are from, not towards him. As the wearer of a compass watch charm views it, the points are down and away

from his eyes. In a similar way as he views the emblem on his ring the points should be down or away from his eyes. The square

is the symbol of earthly, the compass of heavenly perfection. As a combined emblem the ends of the square point up as a symbol

of man’s aspirations toward God; the points of the compass are down to represent heavenly qualities coming down from God to

earth. Therefore, it would seem that the proper way to wear a ring would be that is which its symbolism is best expressed; namely,

that in which, when the hand is held in its usual position the points of the compass are towards the earth and away from the

wearer’s eyes. Thus it will be seen that our conclusion does not agree with the writer in Temple topics. He truly says that in

hanging an American flag we would not put the stars down but in hanging a compass or a square and compass, he surely would

put the points of the compass down. The same rule holds when worn as a ring or button or a watch charm; namely, they would be

worn the same way with the points down. When so worn, they all serve the same purposes, and by no means the least of these

purposes is to announce to the world the proud wearer is a Mason. This months stated meeting dinner on March 10, and will be

served at 6:00 PM, I hope to see you all there. The cost of our dinners as stated in last month Trestleboard are $8.00

and reservations must be made three days in advance in order to participate. You must RSVP by emailing Bob

Cole at [email protected] or by contacting the lodge directly at 623.972.2217.

Junior Warden Message: Salad, Meat Loaf , Baked Potatoes, Green Beans , Roll, Beverage and Birthday Cake

Any brother who has a birthday during the current month receives a free Stated Meeting Meal and Birthday Cake.

Brother, Hal Knowlton, was greeted west of the altar by Worshipful Master, Steve Wieters. Brother Hal was given a special

Masonic coin and was invited to sit in the East for the remainder of the stated meeting. This was to acknowledge his continued

assistance and dedication to the well-being of the Lodge and its members. Brother Hal is the chairman of the irrevocable trust

committee. His committee is responsible for looking after our investments. Brother Hal and his committee members put in a lot of

hours monitoring the stock market and looking for ways to improve our financial situation. For any of you who have money in the

stock market you know how difficult of a job this is, in this economy. Thank you, brother Hal, for all you do.

.At the January meeting of Sun City Nile Club it was decided to meet an extra day each month and work on items requested by the two hospitals to which we are assigned. Several members attended the first work session where a number of tulle tutus were put together while others worked on chemo/surgical caps. We gave 24 tutus and 18 pillowcases to Princess Badoura to be sent to the Salt Lake City Shrine Hospital in February. The focus of our February work session will be making the chemo/surgical caps requested by the Springfield, MA Shrine Hospital. We will then begin on caps for Salt Lake City and Johnnie for Springfield .We encourage any Daughter of the Nile to join us at our regular meetings held the first Monday of each month at 10:30 AM with lunch following and also join us on the fourth Monday for the sewing session. Even if you do not sew you are welcome to help in other ways or simply enjoy

fellowship with us.

The Past Masters meet on the second Tuesday of the month at 8:30 AM in the Jackson room. Coffee and doughnuts are available. Past Masters of Sun City Lodge N0 72 or Past Masters members of other jurisdictions are welcome. Our purpose is to assist the Worshipful Master, officers and the Lodge. We also provide funeral services for members of our lodge and other lodges when requested. The honorable station of Past Master cannot be honored by the brethren if it is not honored by its possessor. Fortunately, almost all who have earned the title of Past Master continue to serve their lodges with distinction. It is a title which has been earned by their total involvement in lodge activities and by their personal sacrifices. As with all honors and titles, Past Masters find that there are new rights and privileges which go with the title. There are

also additional duties and responsibilities, and new challenges.

Masonic tradition calls on us to render aid to our sick and

needy brothers. While we are getting better at doing that, we

have been neglecting our ladies and their needs. If any of you

The chapter voted to continue until May so keep bringing in your blankets, sheets, towels and wash cloths and etc. We were so proud to have our Worthy Grand Matron and Patron present Lillian Ryan as a Grand Representative to New Bruns-wick in Arizona, we now have three: John Bennet to North Carolina in Az and Ardath Wilbur to Missouri in Az. It was so nice to have guests on the sidelines and some back several times. Worthy Matron honored Karen Bulawa as a special chapter member and also thanked all who have helped in any way. She also thanked all pro tems and said "we couldn't do it without you". Please keep our shut-ins in your prayers. Proficiency cards were presented to Lillian

Ryan, Carol Tannheimer, Ula Miller and Nancy Keylon. We also have several others working on them with chair, Ruth Emanuel.
