Skye Park Rugs HRCAV Top Team Trophy Showing 2013 Hosted by Gisborne & District ARC

On Saturday 19th & Sunday 20th January 2013 Gisborne DARC proudly hosted this year’s HRCAV TTT Showing Champion-ships comprising over 300 riders at the Royal Geelong Show Grounds. Thank you to the venue for being so helpful during the planning stages and on the day. Particular thanks to Jacqui, Leigh and Bill, you were a pleasure to work with and made us feel so welcome. I am delighted to say that everyone who entered and attended the event was able to compete. This was a great achieve-ment as quite a few competitors had not qualified on their performance cards. Thank you to Jen Mainland, HRCAV Rep, for level assessing to make this possible and for assisting with numerous queries throughout the weekend. Our fabulous Judges certainly had their work cut out! Everyone was beautifully turned out – endless, great moving and eye catching combinations. Thank you to Angela Carter, Lien Cooke, Tryphena Gahan, Jo Lane, Karen Middlebrook, Sally Mizzi, Mandy Organ & Jenny Smith. Bev Mumford had originally been booked to judge as well. I understand that she did have a lovely day watching her daughter Zoe ride and catching up with friends. Bev was determined to attend TTTS and this was the last event she did attend. We were so sorry to hear Bev has sadly now lost her battle with cancer, a great loss to the HRCAV, our sympathy to her friends and family. Thanks to the GDARC TTTS sub-committee for all your hard work in the 10 months leading up to the event. You did a su-perb job of ensuring everyone involved had a lovely weekend. It’s a wonderful feeling to be part of such a friendly and effi-cient team. The Event Secretary did change a few weeks prior to the event and I would like to sincerely thank Melissa Harper for the immense amount of work she completed before stepping down including the draw and organisation of so many other important elements of the event. It was such a shame that Melissa was unable to attend to see the result of this work herself. Thanks to the GDARC members and all the Team volunteers who ensured the event ran so smoothly. Thank you to Rodney Kruz who did an amazing job of Scoring, your experience of recent TTT Showing events is priceless! Without Sponsorship, TTT Events simply cannot happen, so when you go shopping, please support the businesses that sup-port our events. Huge thanks to all of the Sponsors for your generosity in supplying amazing competitor and raffle prizes, Skye Park Rugs, Equissage, Bels Bling Browbands, Racing Victoria, Equiluxe Floats, Air Rated, Black Horse Clothing, Horse-land Geelong, Horseware Ireland, Jelly Belly, Parklands Farm, Villainous Coffee Company, Crawford Mortgage Services, Eco-tak Horsewear, Equestrian Success & Mindset – Tanja Mitton, Fodder Focus, Hamag, Horsewyse Magazine, International Ani-mal Health, IRT Insurance, Koolit Wraps, Sporthorse Saddlery, Sykes Equestrian, The NRG Team, Woof & Hoof, Gisborne Vets, Aitken’s Saddlery, Campbells Floats, Fat Pony Equestrian, Federation Bulk Haulage, Horse Rug Cleaners, Mellizo Park Equestrian, Remote Coach – Fiona Dearing, Tonys Practice, Your Riding Success – Natasha Althoff, Caribu Horsewear, Equino Equestrian Performance Apparel & Tack, Feed Plus, HM Horsewear, Jacks Run Equestrian Centre, Paddock Partners, Perrys Stockfeeds Kyneton, Yggdrasil Equestrian Training, Country Park Herbs, Manor Lodge Equestrian Centre, Networking Mares, Roberts Horse & Cattle Feed Bins, Southern Stars Saddlery, Main Event Photography, Double Up Panels, Prydes Feed. Tips for helping horses beat the heat:

Make sure your horses have access to plenty of water:

If there is no ad lib water source provide at least two water buckets

In extreme heat a horse can drink up to 75 L of water a day!

Teach your horse to drink electrolytes

1. Dissolve 30g of table salt (NaCl) per 4L of drinking water

2. Or 25g table salt (NaCl) and 25g of lite salt (KCl) per 4L of drinking water

3. May have to start with less than this and gradually build up

4. Initially try adding molasses to encourage the horse to drink electrolytes

Provide shade and ventilation:

If horses are turned out in a paddock, make sure there is shade available

Leave stable doors open as often as possible to allow proper ventilation

Place large fans in stabling area, being sure to keep cords out of reach of horses and wa-

ter

Leave rugs off (even lightweight cottons), they compromise the horses ability to dissipate

heat

Exercise:

Condition your horse for the intended exercise, fit horses cope better with heat

Work and exercise should be minimal during the hottest part of the day

Ie limit activity to early morning and evening hours

Stay in the shade as much as possible to reduce radiant heat

Reduce workload in hot weather

1. Ride shorter distances

2. Reduce the training intensity

Make certain your horse recovers after exercise

Take a rectal temperature and monitor until it is normal (<38.5 C) Know your horses

resting temperature

CONTINUED

Tips for helping horses beat the heat:

Observe how much your horse drinks, urinates, passes manure

If your horse is excessively fatigued or out of breath while you are riding, get off, get in

the shade, and cool the horse down.

Animals at risk:

1. Horses that are old, overweight or have a heavy hair coat, eg Cushing’s disease,

have a harder time dealing with the heat

2. Consider clipping these animals

If your horse shows signs of overheating:

1. move to a shady, well ventilated area

2. hose the horse with cool water or a 50:50 alcohol/water mix

3. Scrape water off the coat

4. Avoid leaving wet towels on the horse

5. Continue washing and scraping until the horse cools down

Seek veterinary advice if you horse has a persistently high rectal temperature, remains listless,

unwilling to move, or develops colic.
