Scientist from the
Botanical Survey of India
(BSI), Dr. Lal Ji Singh has
invented a novel way to
replace plastic drinking
straws by developing a
reusable bamboo straw
from a bamboo species
endemic to the Islands.
The taxonomy of the
bamboo species was
described from the Island
almost 15 years ago in 2003
(Blumea2003,48: 187-192).
It is characterized by thin
large hollow erect culm
with longer internodes.
However, it's potential and
anatomical study has not
been attempted so far.
Therefore, an attempt has
been made to examine the
potential of this endemic
species by Dr. Singh and
his study led to an
invention of 'Eco-friendly,
biodegradable Reusable
drinking straw'. It is the
most significant
contribution from these
Islands in terms of
ecological balance and
socio-economic aspects.
Dr. Singh, Scientist/ Dy.
Director & Head of Office
Botanical Survey of India,
Andaman and Nicobar
Regional Centre said that
during morpho-anatomical
study in the year 2011, its
m o r p h o - a n a t om i c a l
structure has lead into the
idea of utilizing it as an eco-
friendly natural drinking
straw instead of modern
synthetic drinking straw
made from plastic and other
synthetic fibres.
The commercialization of
natural straw will add to the
income to local people by
growing bamboo on one
hand and being
biodegradable straw, it will
fully evade synthetic straw.
