Dear Parents, It is another sports season, and Dicker-son Photography is here to capture your son or daughter’s sports pictures. Sep-tember 24-28th sports pictures were tak-en. Something new that I am doing this year is online ordering. Instead of forms that the students can misplace, every thing is online at www.dickerson-photography.com by clicking on online viewing. Every athlete who had their picture taken can go online and order which package you would like. You will have the choice of picking them up at the school or I can ship them to your home. If for some reason you are una-ble to get online, I will have order forms available. Each student received a slip with step-by-step instructions on how to log into the photographs. If you have any questions, please feel free to con-tact me by email: [email protected] or by phone: 607-377-2532. I look forward to working with you! Danielle Dickerson Owner/Photographer

The Dean of Students by

Claire Ames

What is a dean of students? Mr. Jeff Lawrence is Addison Central School’s new dean of students. Be-fore he was our dean, Mr. Lawrence was a middle school principal for two years, and a high school princi-pal for one year. Mr. Lawrence loves his job as dean of students and wanted to be one so he could have a great influence over a large number of kids. In his spare time, he likes to watch football, play golf, and spend time with his kids. Mr. Law-rence is a great dean of students, and we are lucky to have him in our school district.

Is homecoming going to

be as excit-

ing as you

think it’s

going be?

During the

homecoming

week,

many events take place like

a parade, a soccer game for

our Addison Knights, and

the big homecoming dance.

To find the theme for home-

coming, student council

votes on what trend is in.

This year’s theme is comic

books. Now, do you think

that homecoming is going

to be exciting?

This year we have the op-

portunity to join

band. Band is where we get instruments and we

get to be in fun things like concerts. The concerts

are when we take our instruments on stage. We

got our instruments last week. There are lessons

that we have. That is where we go with all other

people that are in our group and play the same

instrument and we practice. Those are some of

the things we did in band last week.

Woodhull TOPS #NY889(9/20/12) Fall is a time for new beginnings. Weight loss occurs when we make it occur. Making changes requires motivation, information, skills and support. We need to have a specifi c plan, such as eating less than 35 grams of fat, drinking 8 glasses of water and exercising for 30 minutes daily. We should learn from previous weight-loss attempts. Why did you not succeed? Did you get discour-aged, quit going to TOPS meetings? Stay mindful of what you are trying to do. Try focusing on why you want to lose weight and look at how your life and health will be better. Be positive. By staring over fresh is what you may need. Don’t swell on past failures. You are a different person this time and you CAN succeed. Learn from your mistakes and move forward. A new beginning is not a matter of time, but a matter of choice. Success doesn’t happen by choice, but through proper planning, support and focus. Take time for you because you deserve it. Our meetings are from Thursday mornings from 9-10 after a confi dential weigh-in from 8-8:45 in the Woodhull Town Hall. We welcome you to come see if we can help you learn how to Take Off Pounds Sensibly.

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS

Always use common sense. Young children should never go trick-or-treating without an adult.

Never trick-or-treat alone-have a buddy system. Plan your entire route and make sure your family knows what it is.

Costumes should be made from flame resistant material. Wait until you get home and your parents check your candy

before you eat it. Be very cautious of strangers. Accept treats only in the doorway. Never go inside a house. Walk, do not run. Only visit houses that you know and only if the lights are on. Only cross a street at a crosswalk Always carry a flashlight Bring a cellular phone and a watch, if possible. Do not play near Jack-o’-lanterns. Make sure your costume is not too long. Wear costumes with reflective markings and bright colors. Only wear masks that you can see clearly out of

Third graders have been busy exploring the fields, hedgerows, and woods around the school. Our eight and nine year olds have become skilled in identifying at least a dozen wildflowers. Just a few plants the students have drawn and illustrated are Chicory, Joe Pye Weed, Heal-all, Butter and Eggs, Indian Paintbrush, and Queen Anne’s Lace. We decorated beautiful covers for our plant books and dis-played them in our doorway. At Open House we frosted sugar cook-ies with our families. Purple and yellow frosting made beautiful Aster cookies.

Mrs. Hayes’ September News

Mrs. Hayes’ class is “cooking” this year. We have begun the year by getting re-acquainted, working on a routine and discovering what rules we should have for our class-room. We have also been working hard on using self-control and learning to be responsi-ble kindergartners by taking care of our supplies, putting our cupcakes up for lunch in the morning and bringing back our Friday folders. During September we have met the letters Mm, Ss and Rr and have been working on sight and sound recognition as well as correct formation. Through our reading series we have special names for our lines which help to guide the children. They are the following: sky line, plane line, grass line and worm line. We refer to them frequently and have en-joyed learning a special song that tells us to always start our letters “at the top.” This month we have also introduced the sight words “I” , “is”, “a” and “am”, have counted words in sen-tences, introduced rhyming, practiced writing our names and have spent a great deal of time learning basic skills like how to hold our pencils and scissors when we cut. The boys and girls have also enjoyed the introduction to Daily 5 and learning to read to self or read with someone. They have learned that they can: read the pictures, read the words or retell the story. They are also working on finding good-fit books and a good-fit spot when reading with someone. In math we have been working with the numbers 0 - 5, and have introduced ABAB pat-terning. The boys and girls are off to a great start and love to use the play dough to form the letters, numbers and shapes. (It also helps their fine motor skills and they don’t even know it ) A highlight of this month was working on our apple unit. Did you know that there is a star inside every apple that holds the seeds? We also cut and laced our own apples, read about Johnny Appleseed, learned the parts of an apple tree and then made our own ap-plesauce to share with our families at Open House. YUMMY! Our chefs are off to a great start and we look forward to a fun filled learning cook-out. October promises to be exciting as well as we learn about pumpkins, fire safety and pre-pare for our Fall Festival.

In recognition of Constitution Day, the Fifth Grade class presented a Morning Program on Friday, September 14th. The students, dressed in red, white and blue, sang patri-otic songs, recited the Preamble of the Constitution, and told important facts about what rights all Americans have because of the Constitution. After their presentation, they participated in a Classroom Conver-sation about democracy based on the book,” I Could Do That.” Their participation in the Classroom Conversation earned the 5th grade classes a $200 grant from The Council of Humanities. Congratulations on a job well done, Fifth Graders!

Communuity Church of Woodhull

Submitted by Sharon Calkins

(9/23/12) Exodus 3:1-14 Some things our church do are fun such as the cantata and some are hard work such as the Harvest Dinner. These things are done to bring others to church. The

bottom line for you and me is whether we’ve had a personal encounter with God and that is all that matters. If not, nothing else makes a difference. God and you are the only ones that know if you have had that encounter. If you haven’t, it is your fault. He has done everything in His power to, get us to that point. When there is an estrangement the only way to make change is for someone to take the fi rst step. God ALWAYS TAKES THE INITIATIVE. He uses devastating events, such as death, divorce, or a loved one being deployed. Moses was in a dry desert. God uses ISOLATION. We feel rejected and written off, so we stay to ourselves. Moses went from a palace to the other side of the desert. God uses HUMBLING EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES. We are feeling at our lowest, like a failure and worthless. Moses was 80 and tending his father-in-laws sheep. God will use whatever He decides to use to bring us to a personal encounter with Him. He wants all of our undivided attention. Moses saw a burning bush that wasn’t being consumed, and it got his attention. Are we so blind that we fail to see what God puts in front of us? We may not see a burning bush but God has given us ways to acknowledge Him, like people, music and books. He speaks but we are “too busy” to hear. Moses had excuses and so do we, but we need to listen like Moses and obey. Join us Sunday at 9:30 for our services.

Women’s Health & Fitness Day Activities Rescheduled

Corning Community College announces that the Women’s Health and Fitness Day has been re-scheduled for next Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at Noon in room G116 of the Wellness Education Center, Spencer Hill campus, Corning, NY. This event is free and open to the public. Participants will receive information on women’s health and fi tness and have the opportunity to join in a fi tness walk to Spencer Crest Nature Center’s Amelia Pond and beyond. Exercise physiologist Julie Teed will be available to answer questions in the areas of health and fi tness. For more information, please call Julie Teed at (607) 962-9479 or e-mail [email protected].

Dear Editor Plan B: Hire some more private enterprisers to resituate Cinderella fi eld back more towards Little Leagues and re-strooms. Turn N slightly to be in line with curvature of new dike rounding its outfi eld after extending straight stretch from behind bus garage then crossing road with a new hump near new school property parcel B boundry, perhaps leaving a slight overfl ow for extreme fl ooding conditions out at its end in the woods to relieve opposite banks at height of inevitably non cresting waters. Here in this man-made world where God’s to blame for all obstacles people are left to their own devices because mistakes reap just consequences eventually, however followers willing to seek understanding can correct faulty paths misleading masses in their thinkings. Thus guiding the coming kingdom where truth reigns as supreme power, because it’s recognized as a time saver. God’s will rules logically because of its effectiveness, intellegence leads by example because it’s ahead of the learning curves, doing rights not an exploitable function but rather a revelation of services rendered. The next big thing isn’t another false hope or a temporary trend, it’s a faith that what’s been found by experiencing past crooked patterns has worn into deep calming fl ows of meaningful eternal rivers of knowledge, after observing good and evil as by design. Lies are non-binding, malicious intent failed their goals and over time unrealized opportuni-ties await the next generations expectations. Unknown knowledge is a game changing kinetic energy, fears hinder progress, distort decisions and cloud facts. Public projects unfunded by ignorant, spoiled fl unkies of life parading as educators educated and leaders leads to failure of overall system. Free markets provide opportunities for passionate energies to be converted into accomplishments, private initiatives inspires.

Proud dropout,Pete’s Sly

Leo Henry Williamson Leo Henry Williamson, born on December 21, 1923 in the town of Greenwood, NY. He was mar-ried to Betty (Beardsley)Williamson(deceased) and together they raised 3 sons:Lynn(deceased) & wife Joy & their 6 children, Alfred(deceased) and David(Ballston Spa, NY& wife Kathy) & their 3 chil-dren. Together they enjoyed those 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren with one expected on the way. Leo worked hard for 35 years as an Artifi -cial Inseminator with Eastern. He was very good at what he did, taking great pride in helping farmers to produce over 100,000 calves during that time! We nic-named him the the “Stud of Steuben County”. On Wednesday, September 19, 2012, Leo went to be with our Lord, as he passed on peacefully. For that, we give Praise to God for His mercies. He was 88 years old. He and Betty were moved out of Woodhull to be closer to David’s family in Ballston Spa, NY, in Saratoga County after his wife Betty’s 3rd stroke. She passed on in 2008. After that, he moved in with David’s family for 3 years. For the past year, he lived in the county nursing facility. He was well taken care of there and only a short distance from the family. He enjoyed spending time with people and was joy to be around. Everyone who knew Leo, loved him for his sweet disposi-tion and gentle ways. He always enjoyed having company and visiting. He left us all many years of memories. Over the many years, they enjoyed gardening, camping, traveling back and forth to their winter home in Zephrhills, FL, round dancing, playing cards with friends, cooking, baking, canning, and spending as much time with their grandchildren, family & friends as possible. He also leaves behind family in Greenwood that he dearly loved: Gen Williamson(George Williamson-deceased), sister Ester Williamson & family, Roger & Joanne Williamson & family, Steve & Linda Wil-liamson & family, and many nephews, neices, and their families as well. Everyone thought highly of Uncle Leo and he will be missed. A memorial service will be held On Saturday, Octo-ber 6th, at 3:00pm, at the Woodhull Baptist Church, with a reception to follow at the Methodist Church hall. Please feel free to come and share your fond memories of Leo with his family & friends. “Death has been swallowed up in victory!”(1 Cor 15:54).

If you have been attending your House of Worship for any length of time, you know you have been doing it for a reason. Just being there has helped you through many a crisis or sorrow in your life. You have benefi ted greatly from the inspiring sermons, and perhaps you have had an occasional talk with your clergyman about some problem. Now, if at all possible, you should do something in return. Whatever you are able to do, such as making phone calls, arranging a potluck dinner, helping with a cleanup project, etc., would be welcome. It will help you to repay all the blessings and guidance you have received there over the years.
