V O T E W I T H Y O U R W A L L E T : Choose Certified

Sustainable Businesses

Sustainable tourism is growing in popularity.

We’ve already certified organizations in many different industries including:

So it’s no wonder that Sedona and the Verde Valley are trying to brand this region as a sustainable destination. Sedona recently completed an assessment based on the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) criteria and in that report, the Sustainability Alliance (a coalition of non-profits that includes KSB) was mentioned 13 times as a resource. [You’ll be relieved to know that having effective transportation options to mitigate traffic is one of the GSTC criteria.]

One of the Sustainability Alliance programs that got the attention of the sustainable tourism consultants was the new Sustainable Business Certification. The certification has three levels of performance:

Most of these organizations earned the Bronze certification but ChocolaTree and Sedona Recycles earned the Silver/Innovator badge. The goal is to make it easy for locals and visitors alike to identify and favor those businesses that do the most for our community and the environment.

The certification survey helps organizations identify more they can do, but in the process of certifying businesses, we’ve uncovered the most amazing practices. Did you know there’s a business that pays profit sharing to senior employees and had a man out on 6-month paid paternity leave? A professional has diverted 90 percent of his waste from the landfill. A non-profit employs disabled adults from Rainbow Acres.

Reward businesses that are doing the most for our community by choosing ones that have this certification whenever you can. Go to www.SustainabilityCertifications.org for a current list of certified businesses.

• 3/4 of all travelers say sustainability is important to their travel decisions. (World Travel Market Industry Report, 2016)

• In 2015, 66% of U.S. consumers said they would pay more for certified sustainable product— up from 55% in 2014. (The Neilson Report, 2015)

• 72% of meeting planners say they have ‘green’ policies in place for at least some of their meetings; 19% say for

all. (2013 Successful Meetings magazine)

KSB Supports Sedona Trail Keepers

At September’s KSB board meeting, the KSB Trustees voted unanimously to donate $1000 per year for each of the next five years to the Sedona Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Bureau Sedona Trail Keepers program. Keep Sedona Beautiful has joined the growing list of local non-profits and businesses supporting the Sedona Trail Keepers program. The Trail Keepers program allows organizations to sponsor a trail by financially committing to sustain and maintain existing trails. The program also assists in the development of new trails in the USFS Red Rock Ranger District.

The Sedona Trail Keepers program is a joint initiative of the Sedona Chamber of Commerce, the Sedona Red Rock

Gregory “Nick” Chandler

Former KSB Board member and Vice President for many years, Gregory “Nick” Chandler, passed away on November 20th. He would have been 95 on the 30th of November.

Nick was a World War II veteran who served in England in the Royal Air Force. He came to the US after the war with his wife and family, through Ellis Island, with next to nothing except for a desire to work.

He got into advertising, selling ad space in periodicals, eventually starting his

own company which he later sold, to buy a horse farm in Virginia. He raised Arabian horses for years there. Nick eventually sold his farm and came West.

Nick was a strong advocate for the protection of the public lands surrounding Sedona, beginning with the National Scenic Area Designation initiative. Until recently he volunteered as a litter lifter, helping keep our streets and roads clean. Nick believed wholeheartedly in the importance of KSB’s original tag line, “It’s Good Business.”

When remembering Nick Chandler, the word that comes to so many peoples’ minds immediately is “gentleman”. He was a person who cared for others and believed in the public interest.

He will be greatly missed.

Trail Fund, the City of Sedona and the U.S. Forest Service. The program encourages local businesses and organizations to contribute funds toward trail maintenance, an amount that is then matched by the Chamber, yielding up to $250,000 of sustainable funding for the trails by 2021.

Joanne Kendrick, President of KSB notes, “Keep Sedona Beautiful views this effort as a great example of local interests collaborating effectively to enhance access to our beautiful red rock country in a responsible and environmentally sensitive way.”

The KSB Board of Trustees is pleased to announce its support for our trails and to preserve our natural landscape for generations to come which in keeping with the mission of Keep Sedona Beautiful.

2016 Annual FundraiserKSB’s Development Committee is pleased to report that the Annual Fundraiser has already generated $25,000 for the KSB Endowment Fund. That fund now stands at $85,000.

37th Annual Native Plant WorkshopKSB again offered education to more than 125 attendants at this annual workshop on water-wise landscape techniques and the use of native plants, trees, wildflowers and grasses.

Sustainability Alliance KSB is a founding member of this Alliance of not-for-profits which has begun sustainability certifications of Sedona and Verde Valley area businesses.

Coconino National Forest - Forest Service PlanKSB continued to monitor the status of revised comments and modifications to the Coconino Forest Plan. The Forest Service Plan team accepted the most recent KSB comments and noted in particular their appreciation of the tone and substance of said comments.

Noise Abatement – Helicopter ToursKSB in partnership with the city has continued to meet with the new Sedona airport manager in order to determine how best to improve the noise situation in the greater Sedona/VOC area. Airport management is supportive of efforts to require tour companies to comply with FAA Advisories. The city and KSB have been promised the opportunity to review and comment on the airport noise abatement policy currently being drafted.

Wireless Telecommunications Master PlanKSB met with city officials to discuss the current Master Plan relating to the enhancement of Sedona’s wireless communications infrastructure. As a result of that meeting, KSB was provided with the inventory developed by the city’s consultants which identifies eight areas of the city that may require enhanced infrastructure. KSB was given the opportunity to comment on these sites and to suggest locations and equipment that, in the opinion of KSB, provide the best environmental and scenic protection of the area.

KSB’s 2016 Dark-Sky AccomplishmentsThis year, KSB’s Dark-Sky Committee participated

in six dark-sky educational events. In February 2016 the Village of Oak Creek was designated the fourteenth International Dark-Sky Community in the world, following two years of work by KSB’s Dark Sky Committee. The Committee is now helping Camp Verde AZ and Cottonwood AZ to secure the International Dark-Sky Community designation.

Sedona Trail Keepers ProgramKSB Trustees voted unanimously to donate $1000 per year for each of the next five years to the Sedona Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Bureau Sedona Trail Keepers program which will maintain and expand our trails and to preserve our natural landscape for generations to come.

KSB’s Annual Awards CeremonyThe KSB Annual Awards of Excellence honored eleven deserving awardees in 2016. These Awards represent special achievement by local individuals and organizations by encouraging greater community excellence.

Traffic Community Engagement Work GroupKSB participated in the Traffic Community Engagement Group. This group has been formed by the City of Sedona to advise on the best way to inform the community about the current state of traffic, and to and engage the community in the effort to arrive at potential solutions to traffic problems.

Litter LiftersOnce again, KSB volunteers were responsible for removing litter and trash from 65 miles of Sedona area roads.

KSB continues to remain very active with noteworthy achievements through the efforts of its many dedicated volunteers. Perhaps the single greatest accomplishment this year, among so many other accomplishments, was this year’s first ever fundraiser.

During 2016, KSB received financial support from over 150 Sedona area businesses.

Keep Sedona Beautiful, Inc., acting through the stewardship of its members

and volunteers, is committed to protect and sustain the unique scenic beauty and natural

environment of the Greater Sedona Area.
