Notes ON THE PROGRAMNotes by Jonathan Howard (The King’s Singers’ Bass)

Tonight’s concert at Carnegie Hall chartsa unique and far-reaching journeythrough the world of a cappella choralmusic, with works from the Renaissanceall the way through to the present day. Many of these pieces have their roots inNew York City. One of them is BobChilcott’s We are – the first piece intonight’s programme written specificallyfor The King’s Singers’ 50th anniversary– which sets a poem called The HumanFamily by Dr. Maya Angelou, who livedin Harlem for much of her life.We are isa powerful affirmation of how similar weall are as humans, in spite of our physicalor cultural differences. Another brandnew work is Nico Muhly’s To stand inthis House, which looks at the worldthrough a number of different lenses, past and present. The four movementscombine prayers from the turmoil ofmedieval England with modern-dayreflections on the state of our world andour place within it by pre-eminentalumni from our spiritual home, King’sCollege, Cambridge. It is our great plea-sure to perform this work in Nico’s homecity, to show how ancient prayers andcontemporary thoughts from our birth-place are just as resonant in your home asthey are in ours. These two very recentworks sit alongside two pieces commis-sioned for the 40th anniversary of TheKing’s Singers ten years ago. BobChilcott’s High Flight is an ode to therealms of possibility typified by flight, as

we travel upwards and into theunknown; and Eric Whitacre’s TheStolen Child sets William Butler Yeats’poem of the same name, that imaginesfairies tempting human children awayfrom their weary world to a fantasticpastoral idyll, full of magic and bounty.

These commissions join music from theRenaissance in Germany, Spain, andFrance, by Ludwig Senfl, Juan Vásquez, and Orlandus Lassus, as well as folk-songs that span the USA, Ireland, andEngland. And of course, true to TheKing’s Singers continuing commitment tocelebrate the diversity of music there isfor all of us to enjoy, we’ll be surprisingyou with some of our favourite songsfrom across our close-harmony reper-toire, many of which also have links toNew York City.

We are absolutely thrilled to be sharingthe stage with so many singers fromacross the world this evening, throughthe support of DCINY. We are particu-larly delighted that they are beingdirected by two of our illustrious prede-cessors in The King’s Singers: BobChilcott and Simon Carrington. We cannot think of a better way to celebrateour 50th anniversary than being herewith you at Carnegie Hall this evening.

Texts & TRANSLATIONS

I note the obvious differencesIn the human family. Some of us are serious, Some thrive on comedy.

Some declare their lives are lived As true profundity, And others claim they really liveThe real reality.

The variety of our skin tonesCan confuse, bemuse, delight, Brown and pink and purple, Tan and blue and white.

I’ve sailed upon the seven seasAnd stopped in every land, I’ve seen the wonders of the world, Not yet one common man.

I know ten thousand womenCalled Jane and Mary Jane, But I’ve not seen any twoWho really were the same.

Nun kumbt hierher all und helft mir einmal in diesem Saal, wem’s Läuten g’fall, und ziecht an bald, treibt wenig G’schall.GLING GLANG GLING

Ziecht an, ziecht an,wer mag und kann.Mur, maun, mur, maun

Zue dem Festtue das Best.

We are BOB CHILCOTT (b. 1955) Text: The Human Family, Maya Angelou (1928 - 2014) (3 minutes)

Das G’läut zu Speyer (The Ringing at Speyer) LUDWIG SENFL (1486 - 1543) Text: Anonymous (2 minutes)

Mirror twins are differentAlthough their features jibe, And lovers think quite differentLying side by side.

We love and lose in China, We weep on England’s moors, And laugh and moan in Guinea, And thrive on Spanish shores.

We seek success in Finland, Are born and die in Maine, In minor ways we differ, In major we’re the same.

I note the obvious differencesBetween each sort and type, But we are more alike, my friends, Than we are unalike.

We are more alike, my friends, Than we are unalike.

We are more alike, my friends, Than we are unalike.

Now everyone come hereand help me oncein this hall, whoever likes ringing,Soon start pulling, make a little noise.GLING GLANG GLING

Start pulling, whoever can and likes to.MUR, MAUN, MUR, MAUN

At the FeastDo your best.

Where dips the rocky highlandOf Sleuth Wood in the lake,There lies a leafy islandWhere flapping herons wakeThe drowsy water rats; There we’ve hid our faery vats,Full of berries,And of reddest stolen cherries.Come away, O human child! To the waters and the wildWith a faery, hand in hand,For the world’s more full of weepingthan you can understand.

Where the wave of moonlight glossesThe dim gray sands with light,Far off by furthest RossesWe foot it all the night,Weaving olden dancesMingling hands and mingling glancesTill the moon has taken flight; To and fro we leapAnd chase the frothy bubbles,While the world is full of troublesAnd anxious in its sleep.Come away, O human child! To the waters and the wildWith a faery, hand in hand,For the world’s more full of weepingthan you can understand.

The Stolen Child ERIC WHITACREText: William Butler Yates (1865 – 1939) (9 minutes)

Where the wandering water gushesFrom the hills above Glen-Car,In pools among the rushesThat scare could bathe a star,We seek for slumbering troutAnd whispering in their earsGive them unquiet dreams;Leaning softly outFrom ferns that drop their tearsOver the young streams.Come away, O human child! To the waters and the wildWith a faery, hand in hand,For the world’s more full of weepingthan you can understand.

Away with us he’s going,The solemn-eyed:He’ll hear no more the lowingOf the calves on the warm hillsideOr the kettle on the hobSing peace into his breast,Or see the brown mice bobRound and round the oatmeal chest. For he comes, the human child,To the waters and the wildWith a faery, hand in hand,For the world’s more full of weepingthan he can understand.

Lo, thou, my love, art fair; Myself hath made thee so:Yea, thou art fair indeed, Wherefore thou shalt not need In beauty to despair; For I accept thee so,

For fair.

Thou, my love, art fair BOB CHILCOTTText: Christ to his spouse, William Baldwin (1515 - 1563) (4 minutes)

I saw Eternity the other night Like a great ring of pure and endlesslight, All calm, as it was bright; And round beneath it, Time in hours, days, years Driv’n by the spheres Like a vast shadow moved; in which theworld And all her train were hurl’d. I saw eternity. Dance(d) the skies, Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds ofEarth And danced the skies with laughter-sil-vered wings; Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined thetumbling mirth

High Flight BOB CHILCOTTText: Henry Vaughan (1621 - 1695) and John Gillespie Magree (1922 - 1941) (6 minutes)

Of sun-split clouds, and done a hundredthings You have not dreamed of - wheeled andsoared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ringthere, I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung my eager craft through footless halls ofair. Up, up, the long, delirious, burningblue, I’ve topped the windswept heights witheasy grace Where never lark, nor even eagle flew. And while, with silent, lifting mind I’vetrod the high, untrespassed sanctity of space, put out my hand and touched the faceof God.

The King’s Singers were officially bornon May 1, 1968, formed by six recently-graduated choral scholars from King’sCollege, Cambridge. Their vocal line-upwas (by chance) two countertenors, atenor, two baritones, and a bass, and thegroup has never wavered from this for-mation since. 2018 marks the 50th birth-day of the group, and to celebrate, TheKing’s Singers are presenting theiranniversary season: GOLD. Everythingin this GOLD season, from triple-albumto book and concert tour, celebrates theamazing musical heritage of The King’sSingers, and also looks at the brightfuture of vocal music in all its forms.

The group has consistently been wel-comed on the world’s great stages – fromLondon’s Royal Albert Hall to the OperaHouse in Sydney or New York’s CarnegieHall. Two Grammy® Awards, an Emmy®Award, and a place in Gramophone mag-azine’s inaugural Hall of Fame sit amongthe accolades bestowed upon the group.

This love of diversity has always fuelledThe King’s Singers’ commitment to creat-ing new music. A panoply of commis-sioned works by many of the supremecomposers of our times – including SirJohn Tavener, John Rutter, LucianoBerio, Nico Muhly, and Eric Whitacre –sits alongside countless bespoke arrange-ments in the group’s extensive repertoire.

The world may have changed a lot in thefifty years since the original King’sSingers came together, but today’s groupis still charged by the same lifeblood –one that wants to radiate the joy singingbrings every day.
