The MusicOl’ Blue Eyes: Francis Albert “Frank” Sinatra (December 12, 1915 – May 14, 1998) was an American jazz and traditional pop singer, actor and producer who has been recognized as one of the most popular and

influential musical artists of the 20th century. This event is a tribute to Frank Sinatra’s extensive

musical legacy.

The CommunityOak Bay is where we live and work and help our neighbors. We are members of a family and a community.

This year, our community celebrated the building of

the new Oak Bay High School, continuing the tradition of excellence in academics, athletics and fine arts, and developing the keen focus on service, philanthropy and community leadership.

The PhilanthropyTonight’s event is a fundraiser for the Sno’uyutth Legacy Scholarship.

Sno’uyutth (Spreading Good Energy) The Sno’uyutth “Welcome Pole” located at the entrance to Oak Bay High School was dedicated on a recent sunny afternoon (November 22, 2015) in front of a crowd of several hundred guests. The Community Association of Oak Bay, with the Greater Victoria School District, The District of Oak Bay, and the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations participated in this remarkable event.

Designed by Songhees master-carver, Butch Dick and carved by his son, Clarence Dick, the welcome pole is called Sno’uyutth (“spreading good energy” in the Lekwungen language).

Sno’uyutth recognizes the history, culture and traditions of the Songhees and Esquimalt people, promotes mutual respect and understanding between

our communities, and supports our new future together. It stands at a main gateway to the municipality.

Sno’uyutth also embodies the spirit and resilience of the original inhabitants of this land and serves as a tribute to the ancestors of the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations.

Sno’uyutth was conceived by the Community Association of Oak Bay who worked in partnership with Oak Bay Rotary Foundation to raise funds in the community. The active involvement of local businesses, organizations and individuals helped to turn this vision into a reality and will ensure that the “good energy” of this initiative has an enduring place in our community.

The Scholarship

The creation of the Sno’uyutth Legacy Scholarship is the result of new friendships and trust spreading good energy.

The success of the Sno’uyutth Pole Project encouraged two talented and generous individuals (Joseph Blake and Joe Coughlin) to propose that Oak Bay Rotary Foundation establish a new endowment to be called the Sno’uyutth Legacy Scholarship Fund.

The Sno’uyutth Legacy Scholarship is intended to serve as inspiration and motivation for students of First Nations, Inuit and Métis descent who pursue post-secondary training upon graduation from Oak Bay High School.

Starting in 2016, the Sno’uyutth Legacy Scholarship will be offered on an annual basis.

Our Sno’uyutth ChampionsJoseph Blake is the Master-of-Ceremonies of the Frank Sinatra 100th Birthday Event. Joseph has donated his time and effort to produce and promote this celebration of music, community and philanthropy. Joseph has been an active and dedicated member of the Oak Bay community for the last 35 years. He was Music Columnist

for the Victoria Times-Colonist for 15 years before starting his current career as a freelance travel writer with magazines and newspapers across Canada. Joseph is Music Editor for the Pacific Rim Review of Books. He has been an “on-air” contributor to several local radio and television stations. Oak Bay Rotary Foundation is proud to welcome and introduce Joseph Blake.

Joe Coughlin is the Celebrity-Singer and inspiration of the Frank Sinatra 100th Birthday Event. Through three decades, eight albums, one Jazz Report Award, and two National Jazz Awards, he has earned a reputation as a Canadian Jazz

Superstar. Starting in 1979 by winning CBC’s Search for the Stars, Joe has been most at home with the music of singers like Frank Sinatra who appeal to a wide audience. Oak Bay Rotary Foundation is proud to welcome and introduce Joe Coughlin.

The DreamJoseph Blake and Joe Coughlin approached Oak Bay Rotary Foundation with a shared dream and a generous offer.

The shared dream was to celebrate Frank Sinatra 100th Birthday together with a BIG band on the stage of the state-of-the-art, 421-seat theatre in the brand-new Oak Bay High School. The generous offer was that they would contribute their significant time and talent to this venture at no cost if the Foundation would help them and endow the net proceeds from the event to the Sno’uyutth Legacy Scholarship. The shared dream and the generous offer proved irresistible and the rest is history. Oak Bay Rotary Foundation wishes to thank Joseph and Joe for their friendship and remarkable generosity.

Our Special Guests

Alexandra Ages (winner of 2015 Oak Bay Rotary Scholarship). Alexandra graduated from Oak Bay High School in 2015. This scholarship winner is selected based on the candidate’s record of academic excellence and demonstration of leadership qualities and the motto “Service Above Self.”

During her high school years, Alexandra served as: a peer counselor; member of the Island Sexual Health Youth Committee; leader of the Mental Health Forum of the Greater Victoria Youth Council; youth facilitator for the Red Cross Anti-Bullying Program; volunteer for the Greater Victoria Green Team; participant with Amnesty International; and member of the Syrian Refugee Aid Club.

Alexandra also co-chaired the Climate-Action Summit for YesBC Youth and earned Oak Bay High School’s 2015 Humanitarian Award. Alexandra is studying Political Science and Humanities at the University of Victoria. Oak Bay Rotary Foundation is proud to welcome and introduce Alexandra Ages.

Dave Dunnet (welcome to Dave Dunnet Community Theatre).

Dave graduated from Oak Bay High School in 1958. Dave led Oak Bay High School’s band program for 28 years from 1961 to 1992. According to his students, he taught more than music: teamwork; commitment; perseverance; accountability; and responsibility.

Dave’s leadership and dedication inspired excellence among band students that led to success in concert, festival, sport and parade performances in Canada and 17 other countries.

In recognition of his many accomplishments and to honor a legendary band director, the new state-of-the-art theatre was officially dedicated as the Dave Dunnet Community Theatre on Friday, November 27, 2015.

Dave, who started teaching part time at University of Victoria before retiring from Oak Bay High School, is an emeritus faculty member at the university after a long, respected tenure as lecturer, teacher-in-residence, clinician and adjudicator.

Dave is the only individual inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame for both athletics (as a ‘builder’) and fine arts. “He’s a pretty amazing man,” says former student and current Oak Bay High School teacher Tina Horwood. “He inspired a whole generation of people, not just in music.” Oak Bay Rotary Foundation is proud to welcome and introduce Dave Dunnet.

Sno’uyutth pronounced ‘sno-wy-uth’

“Spreading Good Energy”

For thousands of years, the Lekwungen-speaking First Nation hunted, fished and

foraged the lands of what is now known as Oak Bay. As a sign of reconciliation and respect and a celebration of the culture and living history of the First Nations, the Community Association of Oak Bay commissioned Songhees master designer–carver Butch Dick to create a 20-foot pole for the grounds in front of the new Oak Bay High School.

This lasting piece of public art is topped with a symbol of Mother Earth and includes carvings of Coho salmon, camas, and other symbols of health, wealth and new beginnings. Its purpose is to inspire and educate our students and community.

The Community Association of Oak Bay is a volunteer organization of local citizens. We are seeking donations toward this project which we hope to complete by the fall of 2015 when the new school opens. We need your support.

Please make cheques payable to our partner organization, The Rotary Club of Oak Bay Foundation and mail it to:

Community Association of oak bay 138–2017A Cadboro Bay Road Victoria, BC V8R 5G4Tax receipts will be issued for donations of $50 or more.

Thank you!
