Some random thoughts by the pastor…

This weekend’s reading from the Acts of the Apostles gives the impression that Paul is opera'ng under the authority of the hierarchy (James, Peter, etc.) who live in Jerusalem. There is enough evidence to show that Paul got 'red of the limita'ons that were being imposed on those who wanted to be followers of Jesus, that he leF the Pales'nian area. Empowered by a sense that God was directly influencing him (through the Spirit), Paul preached and established small churches without the limita'ons mandated by the Jerusalem hierarchy. Father James Mar'n (SJ) writes: ‘The role and primacy of conscience is an ancient Catholic tradi'on. St. Thomas Aquinas famously said that he would rather go against church teaching than against his conscience. “Absolutely speaking” every variance with conscience, “whether right or erring, is always evil” (Summa Theologiae). The Second Va'can Council wrote, “Conscience is [our] most secret core, and [our] sanctuary. There [we are] alone with God whose voice echoes in [our] depths” (“Gaudium et Spes,” No. 16). But as most Catholics know, this must be a “formed conscience,” that is, one that knows and accepts the Gospels and church teaching, and is ready to put them into prac'ce.’ God is good.

Parish updates: Congratula'ons to our six parishioners who are receiving Communion for the first 'me this weekend! We will soon ‘go-out-for-bids’ on the air cooling system for the worship space of the church (the final project item of the Capital Campaign). Our annual May Breakfast is two weeks away! Congratula'ons to Christopher Richard who was recently awarded Eagle Scout at a court held last Sunday.
