Math Starters and Exit Tickets
Beginning each class session with a math starters will help you make the most effective use of your class time.
“Ticket to leave” (or “exit ticket”) is an ideal way to end a class. It can serve as a number of purposes:
provide feedback to the instructor about the class;
require the student to do some synthesis of the day’s content; and
challenge the student with a question requiring some application of what was learned in the lesson.

Advantages
Mathstarters
• Fosters engagement at the beginning of every class
• Builds math confidence in Dev Ed students
• Allows an opportunity for students to take own-ership of their learning
• Used a pre-assessment of students prior knowl-edge before teaching a topic
• Helps guide the usage of peer tutoring in the classroom
Exit Tickets
• Helps instructors plan the next day lesson
• Helps instructor infor-mally measure each stu-dents level of under-standing
• Allows an opportunity to apply skills to real world applications
• Brings closure to a lesson
Challenges
Mathstarters
• Students with very low skills feeling suc-cessful every class
• Instructors uses it to teach a lesson
• Instructors do not allow an opportunity for stu-dents to share out or work with peers

• Math Instructors not us-ing the data collected from the exit ticket
• Using closed-ended ques-tionsinstead of open-ended questions
