Massive Investment Opportunities
• A buzz of excitement in the air
• Kenya is on the verge of rolling out a USD 23 billion dollar project to exploit the vast resources in Coast and Northern Kenya that will catapult the country into a medium income economy by 2030
• The initiative has major strategic, socio-economic, infrastructure, and regional trade implications
• It comprises seven components (Lamu port, highway, railway, oil pipelines, refinery, resort cities and airports)

The $23 Billion Lamu Port Project
• Arguably the country’s largest investment so far
• Expected to be the largest modern free port on the Eastern Coast of Africa
• The port, will be able to handle Super Post Panamax vessels, with a capacity of 8,000 teu as opposed to the 3,000 teu other vessels it is currently handling
• To serve as a convenient axis that links China/India with the rich interland countries of Africa
• Involves a new transport corridor that will open up a route to the landlocked countries of Ethiopia and the newly independent, South Sudan
• In addition to raising the scope for this region’s tourism, agriculture and industrial potential, the project will open up access to Oil rich Southern Sudan
• The new modern free port will be Africa’s response to Dubai

– Besides the port, the project incorporates an oil refinery at Lamu and a 1,720-kilometre standard gauge railway line to Juba to handle high speed trains, which can travel at 160km per hour.
– The Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport Corridor (or LAPSSET) is the region's, most ambitious infrastructure project
– EAC Protocol enacted in 2011 for the free movement of resources across EA including Rwanda and Burundi
