MOVING FORWARD WITH RENAISSANCE SCHOOLS

WHAT IS THE RENAISSANCE PROJECT?• Four schools chosen based on low proficiency ratings

• Barwell Road Elementary

• Brentwood Elementary

• Creech Road Elementary

• Wilburn Elementary

• Walnut Creek – name only due to redistricting

• Financed solely with Race to the Top (RtTT) funds

• Lower class size

• Prepare teachers

• Increase student growth for low performing schools in Wake County

HOW RENAISSANCE HAS HELPED• Implemented an additional teacher per grade level

• Implemented academic coaches

• Increased the technology

• Provided more professional development

• Signing bonuses

• Performance bonuses

RENAISSANCE SCHOOLS PERFORMANCE AFTER JUST ONE YEAR OF PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION

RTTT FUNDING ENDS…DO WE NEED TO KEEP PROJECT RENAISSANCE• YES because:

• Overall students either met or exceed growth at Renaissance schools as compared to non-Renaissance schools

• An average of 5.8 percent gain in passing rates on state mathematic exams

• Non-Renaissance only showed an average of 1.9 percent gain

• Barwell elementary had over 10% in growth… this equals a year’s worth of academic growth

ADDING MORE RENAISSANCE SCHOOLS• 5 schools should be added based on:

• Students that scored below grade level on EOG’s

HOW MUCH FUNDING IS NEEDED?• 4 million per school includes:

• Extra classroom teachers

• 1:1 Technology for students and teachers

• Renaissance Coordinator

• Professional development

• General supplies

• Library and Media Collections

• Stipends, subs and/or travel

• Evaluation

COST OF CONTINUING RENAISSANCE

WHY WAKE COUNTY NEEDS THE RENAISSANCE PROJECT TO CONTINUE• Continue the academic growth at current Renaissance Schools

• Increase the academic growth at lower performing schools
