Spirit worship

• They worshipped myriad of spirit inhabiting all parts of the universe. These spirit were contacted by the medium during folk healing rituals.

• Plasencia reported the existence of a ritual complex involving the adoration of the idols and the celebration of feasts.

• Pandot- normally celebrated in the house of the chief. Drums and gongs were used during the ritual performances.

Bathala

• Superior one.• He was remote and hard to reach.• Anitos were appealed to intercede

for the believers.• Only anitos could speak to bathala.

Celestial bodies• The sun, the moon, the star, the

clouds, and the wind.• The spirit of the clouds brought rain,

the sun brought sunshine which made the plant grow, the spirit of moon and stars regulated the seasonal changes and caused fertility among women, and the spirit of the wind brought comfort to the people.

Celestial Bodies

• The wind could cause storms and typhoons, the sun could cause drought, the clouds would refuse to bring rain, and the moon and stars would not regulate the seasons.

Anito’s

• Represented by idols known as likha (statuaries)

• It is placed in all important parts of the house-like the granaries-or the fields. Especially during planting and harvesting times.

• Fragrant perfumes were annointed such as musk and civet.

Anitos

•During ceremonies. These idols were “praised in poetic songs sung by the afficiating priests, Male or female, called the catalonan.”•The purpose of these it to ask the idol to favor them with things they were in need.

Religious functionaries

•supplementing the augaries was the practice of divination.•Food offerings were also given to the idols.Example: nganga, sacrifices (goats, chicken, pigs and caraboas)Reasons:1. Recovery of sick

person2. Prosperous voyage

of those embarking on the sea

3. A good harvest from the sowed lands4. A propitious result in wars

5. Succesful delivery in childbirth6. A happy un ion in married life.
